Description Reblog from my Tumblr ?

Please read my commentary before asking any more questions~! thanks

Finished Work:

Edit: I've had a few repeated question of how I work my lineart into the drawing.
I'd like to clarify that i don't really actually have a clean line-art. I have clean-sketches that I work under, but they're not what I personally call lineart. If you zoom in, they are very messy. I do merge the layers together at some point in step 5, and I continue to literally work the colours of the lineart into the skin (which is why i turned the sketch layer into overlay so the colours become very similar and nice to work with). That way I can get an almost none-lineart quality.

also, if you're wondering about canvas sizes, check out my journal about them: [link]

The program I used was Painttool SAI, but I think you can achieve similar effects via photoshop with a low-opacity textured brushes.

I hope this helped : ) Sorry it's so darn long. I kept it as short as I could but it's still a pretty long process.
Please keep in mind this is more of a guide to my painting process and how I technically go about doing this; It's not going to automatically teach you how to render or understand structure or anatomy (which I hope I will cover in more tutorials in the future.), which is very important, of course, to the painting itself. That's why I'll be slowly going through and doing more tutorials on anatomy and structure in the next few months, hopefully .

A good practice for rendering is actually to do still life and human sketches. preferably with a pencil, and not digitally (yet) . If you have any questions feel free to ask me

Step-by-step animation:

In the mean time, have some of my other anatomy tutorials:

If you just want a gradient don't have to switch to PS

Zoom in as close as you can and use the binary tool to place single pixles of whatever colours you want to use. Then select the pixles and just stretch them out.

Qinni In reply to NovaSeepa [2013-03-30 06:31:21 +0000 UTC]

the problem with that is that I'm not just doing gradiants; once I finish doing them, i adjust the layer type, and there's not a lot of layer types in SAI to choose from, whereas PS is a lot more versatile that area. plus I do all my final adjustments in PS, so it's easier to just switch to PS all at once

Very good point! And I know what you mean xD
As much as I'd like for SAI to be able to do that too it would probably make it a much heavier program.

Helped a bit? This is awesome C: It helps so much! I really loved knowing what tools you use and your end adjustments. The hues to the face was something I'd never heard before and I really like the highlight and bone structure helper.
Thanks so much for providing this tutorial!

This is wonderful. I have two questions if I may- when exactly did you merge the sketch layer? And was what your process for creating the scales? (They look so effortless by extremely realistic).

Ugh, I know what you mean about the models. We had this girl in once that I hated drawing (she was anorexic on so many levels). It wasn't until we got male with a normal amount of meat on him that I became interested again.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Qinni In reply to kaito-kit [2013-03-30 05:28:55 +0000 UTC]

I merge the two layers when I feel that there's not much I can do with a rough sketch on top (I don't ever clean-clean my sketch since I blend it in anyways). It's really up to you when you want to merge it - it's just at a point where you think to yourself, "well, there's not much I can do at this point unless i merge this to clean everything up."

the scales I actually did a little later. I first make sure that I have the round-ness of the body down; to make sure it looks solid with the effects I like. I then take a lighter colour than the scale, using the marker tool, draw each scale on. ...so it's kind of just all by hand, no short-cuts I'm not sure how else to do it so i can't really help in that regard D;.

How do you go from it being a lined work to being lineless? That's the one part of the process that I would have enormous difficulty with... Help? ;n;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Qinni In reply to i-Moosker [2013-03-30 05:32:54 +0000 UTC]

I merge the layers together. By that point I only had around 2 main layers: the character and the background. If I'm unsure about what I'm doing, i might add another layer and work on that one (so it'll be easier to just delete if i don't like it), but it will always be merged back with the character layer once I'm satisfied with it.

It's easy to include the lines in the rendering once the layers are merged. it's hard to avoid it, actually xDD.

Ah wow thank you for making the tutorial!
I'm going to try take some tips from it ^^
Um, just wondering what size canvas you use?
When I zoom for details they usually become pretty blurry..
thankyou!

Qinni In reply to ChibiKoneko-Chan [2013-03-30 01:53:42 +0000 UTC]

I usually work at 12 x 18 inch canvas at 300 dpi. So that comes out at around 3600 x 5400 pixels. If there are more characters sometimes I do bigger. But that's my usual minimum

XTheGoldenAppleX In reply to ??? [2013-03-30 00:52:40 +0000 UTC]

it seems like a very difficult process ^^

Qinni In reply to XTheGoldenAppleX [2013-03-30 05:41:14 +0000 UTC]

if you understand structure, lighting and colour, then it merely becomes more or less tedious than anything else . but understanding structure/anatomy is pretty key, i think
