Thanks a lot!

I've been very into LN7's and EXP's since 91, I currently have 3 LN7's, and 3 EXP's and am an admin on the Ford EXP/Mercury LN7 owners club! [link] so I am just a little bit obsessed with them!

I knew this picture looked kind of familiar...
Don't know if you've noticed, but this is the first result on google images for "Mercury LN7"

I did'nt know that, cool!

I did a google image search and my photo is #1, then in the third row the first three are also mine! LOL and on the second page of the search it's #2 and #5 is mine, and then on row 3 #1 is mine again! and in a regular search my image comes up, them my car club twice, neat-o!

Further research showed me that the images of my car on other sites were posted by people I know from my car club! (creepish but flattering)

My little LN7 was a total basket case when I got it, we rebuilt it and drove the wheels off of it for nearly 10 years before I stopped driving it, it had been off the road for a year when I took this photo and believe it or not was in terrible shape, there was no passenger seat, windshield trim, the drivers rear wheel well was damaged and the windshield was badly cracked, the body seams were rsting apart badly too... the car is a 20 footer (looks great from 20 feet away) and I had a lot of good times in it... now I have a very very rare 1983 LN7 I recued from a scrap yard to replace it, it has no rust, and needs only the passenger front fender changed and a bit of interior work and a transmission, it a high output 1.6 litre with an automatic, but I may swap in a 4 speed or an early 5 speed (if I can find one do the rarity of them) and I currently have in my collection of Erikas (the Ford project code for them, like "fox" mustange ect.) 1982 Mercury LN7, 2 1983 Mercury LN7's, 2 1982 Ford EXP's, a 1988 1/2 Ford EXP, and a 1981 Lynx wagon with an 82 LN7 front clip (bolts right on if not for the radiator support being too tall) and I got my buddy hooked on them too, he has 2 1988 1/2 Ford EXP's!

I'd be lucky just to see half of the cars in your collection...

They mostly start out as cars that are considered by most if not all to be un fixable, unrestoreable, and not worth doing anything with... and we go from there!

Most of the cars I own.have owned were basket cases and orphans that nobody wanted... till we make them better, then still nobody wants them! LOL

Aw. There's an Opel Manta A down the street from me that's rotting away behind some guy's garage. It has a busted windshield and some rust (can't quite tell how much, it's masked by weeds) but seems fairly solid... Been trying to work up the courage to ask about it Nothing impressive, but I think it's got quite a bit of charm.

QuanticChaos1000 In reply to dakazi [2009-09-11 18:15:56 +0000 UTC]

I will tell you this right now, it never hurts to ask, believe it or not even if an amazing car is sitting in the most public of viewing, it is very likely that nobody has ever asked about it, most of mine have been that kind of deal too, I've people come up to me after I have bought or been given a car and they tell me how pissed they are that I was able to walk away with it, but when I check they never asked about it at all, so they snooze they lose!

There are several Opels near me, a few Cadets, a Manta and a GT... I wish I had the room/money/time for them because I love Opels!

But when checking out a car be sure that you look thouroughly and don't let emotions get the better of you, look for rust and damage and missing parts, do your research to make sure it's a project you can even get the parts for (I learned the hard way with the pair of 1959 German Ford Taunus 12M's I have) don't offer what you want to pay, nless it is very little (like $100 or less) start low, if they counter offer, you counter offer to split the difference, if they get mad at your initial offer, ask them what they want for it, it might be more then the car is worth monitarily or personally, be ready to remove the car ASAP before minds can change, parts can be stolen ect. get a bill of sale for everything, keep a stack of pre-made BOS's in your car, even if you are buying a $2 car, get a BOS, it is possible for some sales to came back and try to bite you in the ass (like if you ccidentally buy a stolen car, with a BOS you are normally fine, without you are an accessory to theft) take lots of photos before and after buying to make sure that you have visual reference before a sale to keep your mind from sugar coating any visable issues, and reference after a sale to be sure nothing changes between then and pick-up (also good as a record of progress in a restoration or hot rod project) and lastly ask questions, lots of them, don't be afraid to ask them but do it calmly and collectively, if the owner changes the subject about a certain question (IE: is there any rust in the floor?) then check that area out thuroughtly, and be aware that nearly everyone will claim a motor or tranny is new or rebuilt, look for sings of this, is the engine greasy, seeping, missing parts, or clean and painted? Smell the fluids, this helps a great deal, if the automatic trany fluid smells burnt then it is well used and possibly not very good, what colours are the fluids? If there is rust in the coolant there could be water in the system and possible leaks and crakes from freezing in the past, is the oil foamy? it could have a bad head or head gasket or have been underwater at some point, I could go on and on even more on all of this if you like, I don't actually know your personal skill or level of experiance in this sort of thing...

But the last thing I will say ight now is this: Don't get a car because someone else likes it or just because it is popular, you will always be much happier with something that you like, and suits you, I know I am!

I just started thinking about it again the other day actually, mostly because I noticed some people cleaning up the property. The house itself looked fairly abandoned (or possibly owned by a single older person who didn't tend to it) so I'm not even sure if anybody could tell me anything about the car. It would definitely be a project and not necessarily one I could devote much attention to right now, but I'd really hate to see it hauled off to the scrap yard :\ I've only ever seen one other Opel up close and it happened to be a Manta like this one. If I ever see it again I'll have to ask the owner what they do about parts and if they can give me any pointers.

Thank you so much for the tips If I find out anything I'll be sure to let you know!

QuanticChaos1000 In reply to Mister-Lou [2009-03-01 03:02:26 +0000 UTC]

It was American too, they are extremly rare though, there was also a more common Ford version called the EXP and both cars were based opff of the Escort/Lynx platform, not a lot of power, but man can they handle well!

There is more info on them on my Car club [link]

QuanticChaos1000 In reply to Mister-Lou [2009-03-01 05:07:30 +0000 UTC]

This one is a 1.6 Litre FWD 4 speed, later ones are 1.9 Litre FWD 5 speeds (automatics were also always available) and a lot of people mistake them for Mustangs, but these are 2 seaters and a lot lower and leaner, they have a lot of potential for being racers or rods because of how tough and lite they are!

I have 3 82-83 Mercury LN7's and 4 82-88 Ford EXP's, and I just love them, they are so fun to rally in too!

and did they come with the 2.3 liter turbo 4?i remember seeing one in my town only it was an escort EXP,only it was pretty worn out

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

QuanticChaos1000 In reply to Mister-Lou [2009-03-01 05:58:49 +0000 UTC]

The 2.3 is a direct drop in, but it was not a factory engine for it, in 1986 The Ford EXP became the Ford Escort EXP to try to boost sales...

...and then it went fully around again when the Ford Escort ZX2 became just the ZX2.

ok,so i was on wikipedia looking at the car and apparently the second gen was based on the Tempo coupe,am i right?

QuanticChaos1000 In reply to Mister-Lou [2009-03-02 04:18:23 +0000 UTC]

No it's not, does Wikipedia saty that again? There is someone there who keeps changing all the facts to some strange wrong version, my club tries to put it back to the way that it is supposed to be, but it just gets changed back all the time...

It was never based off of the Tempo/Topaz platform, but that platform does share a lot with the Escort/Lynx platform that the LN7 and EXP are based from.

well, there are some cases when Wikipedia screws up,i had a couple of "Godamn Wikipedia Moments",well the tempo/topaz in my opinion it's a crappy car but there are some good points about it

QuanticChaos1000 In reply to Mister-Lou [2009-03-02 04:32:58 +0000 UTC]

They are too heavy for my taste, the Escort/Lynx platform is a decent one, they are very strong and have superb handeling so I have a lot of fun with them!

I am going to Wiki to see what the article says now...

I understood you, a lot of english speaking people call them "sun roofs", I just like that you called it a solar window, and that made me think of how hot it gets inside this car because of the size of the rear window!

And your English is far better than most poeple who I talk to in English speaking countries!
