This is a ref sheet for my character, Ari, from my story Seventh Ring. Click here to read Part 1!

Name: Ariadne "Ari" West (arr-ee-odd-nay, or "arr-ee")
Sex: Female
Age: 25
Race: Human
Current Location: Earth
Status: Farmer/Rancher/Pilot

Personality: Intelligent, caring, and adventurous, Ari has a good sense of humor and a contagious laugh. Physically, she is small and not very strong, but mentally, few can compare. She loves to learn about everything that she can, and if she's comfortable enough, she'll talk your ear off.

She is often mistaken for introverted because she can seem shy and awkward upon first meeting her, but she just rarely has the opportunity to interact with anyone other than William's drudges. While she may not wear a collar as the drudges do, she is still bound by William's rules and forced to spend a majority of her time on the farm. She uses that time to educate herself by reading (they have an extensive library), studying animals and plants found on the farm, and studying star maps and planets. She also loves to cook, paint, and be anywhere but inside William's house.

Ari is not afraid of getting her hands dirty. She loves to work with Three on robots and machinery that may need repairs, as well as working on mechanical experiments and technology with her brother, Lucas. She is capable of piloting small space crafts as well.

While William is away on longer trips into space for military work, Ari and the drudges often enjoy their time together. Her favorite experiences usually involve sitting around a fire outside with Five and Six on a warm night and listening to Three tell stories about his world. She finds the aliens fascinating and never refers to them as drudges or treats them as such. It's her dream to visit their planets some day and meet their families and experience their culture.

Likes: Reading, learning, exploring, repairing machines/robots, animals, gardening, aliens, space, traveling, jams and jellies

Dislikes: Sports, fighting, guns, violence, being wrong, being alone

History: Ari was born on the first OLYMPUS space station, one of the largest civillian space stations to orbit New Earth. When she was six, her parents were fortunate enough (and wealthy enough) to be chosen to live on Earth in an attempt to start their own repairs shop.

The only humans allowed on New Earth are the wealthiest and most successful. According to the government--which controls every orbiting space station--the planet was still in the process of being "reborn" and needed further healing after hundreds of years of abuse. Only then could the general population return. But humans still needed New Earth's resources, so the wealthiest humans were allowed to return to the surface in order to continue to supply the masses with food, water, and other consumer products.

Ari's parents opened their repair shop shortly after their arrival on New Earth. Her older brother, Lucas, learned from his parents and discovered he had a passion for invention. It didn't take them long before they had a steady customer base. All of those businesses owned by the wealthy still used machinery and robots to produce the goods that would be shipped back into space, so they needed someone available (and local) to fix any equipment that went down.

Like Lucas, Ari grew up learning from her parents and helping around the shop. By the age of 17, she had become a familiar face at the front desk to more frequent customers, and she also learned to pilot a small space cruiser that her father used to collect metal and debris that orbited the planet. This recycling method allowed them to have access to many metals and materials that could no longer be found on Earth. Other companies on the planet had come to rely heavily on her parents' shop for all their repair needs.

Lucas had joined the military's R&D division as soon as he was old enough to enlist, and during his initial training, he met William. The two became friends and Lucas learned that his parents had done machinery repairs for William's parents several times in the past. At the end of their terms, they returned to Earth and continued to be friends. It was during this time that Lucas introduced William to Ari, which inevitably lead to their marriage.

William was not nearly as cold or controlling when he was younger, though he had an inherent desire for perfection and legacy, both traits passed down by his father. William knew that Ari's parents were engineers, so he felt their children would no doubt be "good stock." The children of the wealthy were taught from very young ages that it was their blood that was needed to keep New Earth pure and successful. William was not immune to these teachings and primarily married Ari for that reason. Ari, on the other hand, was born to far less wealthy parents who believed in love.

It didn't take her long to figure out why William had married her. She'd found him charming, powerful, and able to care for her in a world where only the wealthy survived. But after several failed attempts at trying to get pregnant, William became distant. Ari knew he'd wanted children from her, but she never conceived. One fateful trip to the doctor told him all he'd need to know; his wife would never carry his children.

He did not separate from her or seek out a divorce. A divorce would mean everything he owned would be split, including the fortune he'd built just from his military work alone. Instead, he built a very large house, surrounded it with turrets and an electric fence, and confined her to the property.

Ari could not leave even though the desire was there. William provided a majority of the business her parents' relied on in order to stay on Earth, and with their ages advancing, she knew they would not survive back on OLYMPUS. She knew he would stop doing business with them entirely and even sever ties with brother Lucas. She feared the damage her selfishness could cause and decided to stay with him for the good of her family.

It was during this isolated time that Ari began to educate herself and learn everything that she could about everything that was available to her. William had provided her with a very extensive library that was filled with books on nearly every subject imaginable. She never allowed herself to fall victim to self-pity, despite her non-existent marriage to a man that no longer wanted to have anything to do with her. She focused instead on keeping herself busy and always being open to learning new things. Eventually, she hopes, she will be able to escape to the stars and discover new worlds and new knowledge.

ARTIST'S NOTES:

Ari's reference sheet was in dire need of a remake, seriously. My poor girl! I reduced a lot of unnecessary clutter and decided on her primary outfit and hairstyle. I tend to over-complicate things, so this reference sheet is much more clear and more pretty than the first version (which is now in storage where it belongs).

And look! A size comparison so you guys know how big she is compared to Seven! I've been meaning to make something like that for the longest time and just never got around to it. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to slip that in. All-in-all, I'm very happy with how this turned out and am glad I can scratch it off my to-do list. And of course, this also means I'll feel more comfortable commissioning people for Ari art, since before, I was sort of embarrassed about linking them to the old sheet...
