Description First in a sketchdump from my school sketchbook.

Captain Ballius is a scary person. The prose at the top is the start of a three page essay that he wrote through my hand, and he tells it so prettily that it takes you until about halfway to realise he's actually talking about torture methods.

I just realized that I never commented on this D: it is a travesty!

I love this picture so much, and it made me fall in love with Ballius' design. You do such a good job positioning his arms in a natural way, and his face is such an interesting and unique design.

I'm sorry if I missed it somewhere else, but what are the two shiny dark things on either side of his head? I keep meaning to ask.

You have improved a lot in the last (oh gosh) almost four years, but I still love this picture way too much.

Oh the black things? They're his eyes. He has those insectile, hard ones, and then the sort of reptillian ones. With a combination of all six he has nearly a 360Β° sphere of view. The eyes are also a symbolic manifestation of the thing that made Ballius what he is, so to him they carry pretty much same meaning as scars.
I once removed his "normal" eyes in a bunch of pictures to see what he'd look like: [link]

And thank you very much! It makes me very happy that you like his design, especially considering it's kind of.. odd. Getting comments on old pictures that I still like is always super nice

He wins all of the blinking contests.

What was Ballius before? And what made him as he is now? I don't think that I have heard much about his past before.

Ballius is probably my favorite character of yours.

I actually wrote about him and the rest of the Cousins on Outlook a long time ago: [link]
It's an old writeup but aside from tiny irrelevant details it's still valid.

I'm very pleased you like him!

Beautiful sketch. Excellent work with the fangs and the scaly texture. The quote really seems to compliment his character.

Thank you very much! Ballius is one of my closest and most important characters to me, and this little essay I think is something of a milestone marker in his character development over the years. Although it has a kind of dated feel and still isn't great, you're welcome to read the entire thing if you're interested. [link]

I did read it, and can I just say: Wow. Ballius's subtle delight in torture, combined with his methodical, collected tone make for a truly delightful character. I especially like the line, "...the most exquisite of modern methods..." As if he's describing a dish he likes rather than torture and the extraction of information. Beautiful work and a wonderful character. I think that exerpt would make a great addition to submit. I'd love to read more about this character.

W-well, if you really are further interested, he has a category tag on my Tegaki [link] where I put pictures of him and his kin/associates. There are a few entries where he voices his opinion on matters.
He also has a Formspring where he skillfully diverts answers questions.

These are both fascinating sites, though I'm largely unfamiliar with them. I look forward to getting to know these characters better.

Sweet look!
Yeah, that is so pretty, it hardly sounds like torture.

I love the teeth at the front. that's just awesome looking

Ballius' teeth are a real pain to draw, but I think they're usually worth it.

Thank you! C:

I want to read the essay!

He is very cool-looking though- alien, but realistic. I like this picture a lot. Especially the hands. I have the freakin' hardest time getting four-handed characters into realistic poses, that neither look two-handed (one set useless), hide the fact that they have two sets altogether, or look hopelessly contrived.

Erg, I know. I'm always like; "What the hell do I do with the other pair??"

I may put it up on Outlook if I ever get around to editing it, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Β¬_Β¬;

Oh no no, all squiggly ballpoint. Almost everything I my sketchbook is ballpoint, and about 90% of everything I draw in my free time is using ballpoint.

Actually, ~turbofanatic does Epic Ballpoint, and calls the technique such. You should check out her stuff; the artwork and worldbuilding are just amazing.

QuazarShark In reply to ScarletJaguar [2008-10-04 23:48:39 +0000 UTC]

I was't going to show it to anyone, because it's kinda badly written (it all sounded so good in my head! ) and I guess I'd like to edit it first. If it ever gets put into a digital form though, I'll put it up on Outlook for you guys.
