Description
[EDIT]So I finally remade this tutorial. The main reason for that is the fact that the so-called layout was just horrible.
I've used different photos as well (because I didn't keep the old ones -.-)
But basically the content is still the same, I've just added a few things.
If you, however, prefer the old version: It can be found there [link]

If anyone detects a mistake or has a suggestion for a different wording in some cases, feel free to tell me.
I'm bad at explaining, especially in English xD

This is so very helpful! You have a great technique. Ah, sometimes I have trouble thinking the process through when I am making clay sweets. I have just started experimenting with clay, it's a challenge.

Thanks so much! (Also for the fav)
Yes, I know what you mean
Actually I never plan things properly, so I often end up saying 'what now?'. Yet it's usually alright in the end.
But especially when doing a tutorial, I don't have any sort of plan at all before starting...Next time, maybe.

You're welcome! <3
Ah, I see; so, a lot of experimentation? I've made a few cake slices, and the type I wanted was challenging, but I actually tried thinking it through. Surprising, I know. Wow, then this tutorial is even more amazing, if you didn't have a plan. I envy you. ^^

QueEnOfNights In reply to Vivli [2010-02-25 17:20:24 +0000 UTC]
Indeed
Oh, cake slices are great. Did yours turn out well then?
Actually I'd like to make a tomato-slice tutorial as well, because many people seem to have some difficulties making them (me too, by the way, but at least I have a general idea of how to make them ) Anyway, I *without-a-plan-person* managed to mess it up again, they looked like this: [link] Not good.
So now I'm not sure whether I should still do it xD

Vivli In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-02-25 18:41:52 +0000 UTC]
They have turned out pretty well for my first try! When I get the camera back (my sister and I trade, since she's in college and I'm still a senior), I'm going to take pictures. They aren't totally elaborate, but they're cute.
Oh, please do make a tomato-slice tutorial. If I made a tomato slice, it would probably look nothing even slightly resembling a tomato. Canes are hard. D: Your tomato slices are cute, though. And very numerous... That is much better than I can manage! Ah, the joys of polymer clay.

QueEnOfNights In reply to Vivli [2010-02-26 15:00:08 +0000 UTC]
I'm glad to hear that.
Oh then I'm looking forward to seing them!
OK, I'll do it then
They're definitely hard. Especially because until the very end you can't really be sure they look good, sometimes you think you did nothing wrong and then you cut them and they look nothing like they're supposed to >_<
Yes, yes...By the way, what clay do you use, Fimo or Sculpey? (Or Kato, Cernit or whatever they're all called )
π: 0 β©: 1
Vivli In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-02-26 18:34:21 +0000 UTC]
Yay, I am also looking forward to your tutorial! (:
I know exactly what you mean. I was doing a sushi cane, and I rolled it to make it thinner, but when I cut it, everything was blended together and I ruined it. D: I actually use Sculpey. My sister uses Fimo, and she has reported to me that it's the same quality as Sculpey. At first I was skeptical about using Sculpey, but it's great so far. I have a little supply of it, I need to buy more. Especially white and black. XD And I want some TLS!
π: 0 β©: 1
QueEnOfNights In reply to Vivli [2010-02-27 10:17:18 +0000 UTC]
I might do it this weekend.
That sort of stuff can be really frustrating, especially if it's taken a lot of time to make it.
Yes, I guess they're quite similar. I've only once used Sculpey, because it's not exactly easy to get in Germany. But it's cheaper than Fimo, so I'd perhaps use it as well if I had a choice (sounds so tragic xD)
Anyway, I think Sculpey is a little softer than Fimo so it's sometimes easier to work with, but they just both have their pros
It's really annoying, at the shop where I buy the Fimo-stuff black and white is usually sold out...
TLS is amazing, I recently bought the Fimo-'version' and it's really useful. I've always wanted to make decent cupcakes xDD

Vivli In reply to QueEnOfNights [2010-02-27 19:02:49 +0000 UTC]
Being cheaper is definitely appealing to me, who has no job. D: Hopefully soon I will be getting a job, as I submitted another application to this place when an employee/friend said I should apply. Connections can be good. XD Then I can binge on buying clay! What do you think is really great about Fimo? I don't know much comparison-wise. I just know that a lot of people use Fimo now.
I know, TLS just really completes things like cupcakes and cake. It's much more realistic to have textured frosting than just the solid clay. (:
π: 0 β©: 1
QueEnOfNights In reply to Vivli [2010-02-27 19:31:04 +0000 UTC]
Of course. Fimo has become really expensive around here, about 2,40 β¬ which is 'quite' a lot if you ask me >_<
Oh then I wish you good luck with it!!
Great about Fimo...Uhm, I'd say it doesn't break that easily, and it _can_ be easier to work with because it's harder. So for example when adding cream or anything, it rather retains its shape.
By the way, I've just submitted that tutorial: [link]
Definitely. And for example when it comes to cakes- Most 'real' cakes contain something creamy as well xD
But sometimes it takes soo long when mixing clay and TLS. But it's worth the effort.

Have you seen the one for strawberries? [link]
Anyway, I may do some more, but I don't have much time at the moment.
I tried to make one for tomato slices, and I took all the photos and stuff, but they looked really stupid in the end, so I suppose I won't be doing that one very soon

This is such a great tutorial, and everything goes fabulous with it...until I try to make it smaller. I roll it out, wait a few hours so the clay won't smear when I cut it, and am saddened to discover that the inside is a mushed up anti-orange.
Any tips? lol

Mangabaka In reply to NCPanthersgurl [2009-08-06 02:58:03 +0000 UTC]
Put the cane in the freezer :0. Wait about 30 minute, or until the cane it's hard, and go cut it still hard. It won't getall messy inside.
It's works even for air dry ceramic, wich what i used since fimo or sculpey is not sold here
π: 0 β©: 1
NCPanthersgurl In reply to Mangabaka [2009-08-06 13:56:41 +0000 UTC]
But my issue isn't in cutting it...my issue is in ROLLING it. When I cut it the slices came out neat and clean; but when I rolled it to get them smaller the insides shifted and became blah.
π: 0 β©: 1
Mangabaka In reply to NCPanthersgurl [2009-08-06 21:52:01 +0000 UTC]
Do not roll it :0
Press it with your fingers carefully, until the cane gets the diameter you want, if you roll it they become bleh excatly

Yeah I see a lot of people making perfect canes and I was completely confused as to why that was one of the few clay feats I just couldn't manage to accomplish. Now I know that you have to pinch them right lol

QueEnOfNights In reply to NCPanthersgurl [2009-07-24 20:47:21 +0000 UTC]
Hm...okay, that's strange...I've messed up a lot of them, but something like that has never happened to me so far .___.
But maybe that can happen if you use rather liquid clay. You know, I usually use Fimo and it works fine with that.
Sorry I couldn't help you :sadness:
