Description "Shooting Star" I saw the most amazing shooting star last night, actually it was more than a little terrifying too as it's what I guess you would call a near miss, it was so bright it illuminated the dark clearing I was standing in so it was either a really big chunk of meteor or very low in the sky before it burnt up. I actually thought a car was driving up the road at first but the light was the wrong colour and seemed to come from everywhere, that's when I looked up from my camera and saw this thing exploding above me, thankfully I was taking a star shot in the clearing at the time and had the camera pointed in the right direction to capture this beauty, sheer dumb luck really

You can watch my night sky time lapse movie Ive just finished making called "When Darkness Falls" on YouTube here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPnAq-…

Thank you. I shot this with my faithful Canon 5DIII and an 8mm circular fish eye, it was just a really lucky shot and amazing I had the camera pointed in the right direction at the right time as that sort of event doesn't happen every day, I've never seen a meteor that close up before and possibly won't again.
Β Β  Just FYI and for future reference, on the very bottom right of this page and every DeviantArt page, is an EXIF data panel which tells you all the info about the camera and settings used to create the image, I always leave my data intact so others can learn from it. Some people chose to remove their EXIF data so it won't always tell you the settings for every single image on DA but it's usually a good place to check for info.

Actually it might also have been "just" an Iridium flare.

Still great shot!

Hmm, I thought you only got those flashes of satellites and other such phenomena wile the sun was at a certain angle to your position such as just moments before astronomical twilight? I've seen heaps of those and it's easy to spot the difference but this was after 10:30 at night here which means it's properly dark here and it shouldn't be possible to be getting any reflections off the sun from this angle? I could of course be totally wrong and you might well be correct it was bright flaming blue and lit up the entire clearing I was standing in, I though was an odd colour for a comet and it was also very close yet didn't make a single sound so anythings possible I guess.... maybe it was just aliens LOL.

Aliens FTW!

Bright blue is indeed a weird color, for either a shooting star or a satellite glint.
Maybe it was some piece of space junk re-entering the atmosphere and it was made of some odd metal alloy. If you burn metal alloys, you get the weirdest colors (that's basically what they do to get colorful fireworks).

A rare shot, and very well composed !

A more aggressive postprocessing to increase contrast would bring more depth to the night sky, imho. And perhaps some color noise reduction. (not luminance noise reduction ! that would ruin the stars...)

Thank you for the lovely complement and I'm really glad you like it and that it stirs up your sense of adventure, grab you camera and get out here there is lots to see This is actually my second such encounter with such a close and blindly bright falling star unfortunately I had my camera pointed at the wrong part of the sky the first time it happened so didn't manage to capture anything sadly which is pretty tragic because it broke up into multiple pieces and scattered into a spectacular shower of sparks, I've never seen anything quite like it before and may never again so I'm glad I managed to capture this one, it's not quite as spectacular but it comes pretty close, we often see shooting stars here, I usually count about 20+ on any given night but nothing this bright or close, this particular one was intensely bright and burned an eerie pale blue colour
