I remember seeing a picture of this area of space when I was really young and being amazed at the ghostly figure of the horse head emerging from the red mist. Ever since, it’s been my favourite part of the galaxy, so pretty I’m pleased I can now image it after years of not having the right camera! The bright star next to the flame nebula is Alnitak, the eastern-most star of Orion’s belt.

Details:

Scopos 80mm f5 refractor
Modified Nikon D50
Astronomik UHC filter
26 x 120 second exposures @ ISO 1600
Deepsky stacker and Photoshop

Great image of the horse head... Its amazing what a camera can do... I've seen the horse head visually through a 30" newtonian, however when I looked with my old 11" cassegrain there was just nothing there.. With a Camera and a 30 second exposure I've seen the horse head come out clearly with only 66mm of aperture..

The flame nebula has come out really nicely in this shot too, and has retained a natural looking colour..

Well shot and processed.

Thanks very much, Alex! Yeah, this has to be my fave area of the galaxy. It must have been crazy to see this visually!

I like that part of the sky - large area mosaic always amazes me. There are so many objects packed there on relatively small area.

Exactly - and what's more - it's easy to watch even with small aperture gear.

You did a nice job on framing an image that isn't visible to the eye.

Thanks a lot !! It's really quite easy to frame/find! Just point at alnitak and it's there. Then blast off an exposure and look where the horse is on the camera. Then just move the scope to get everything in the centre.

Ok, you got me there.
I would have to wait at least a week before I could see my picture. I doubt I could keep the mount tracking that long

haha! What mount have you got?

tommyhawk13 In reply to quicksimon [2008-11-04 15:18:48 +0000 UTC]

Heh, it's not the mount that's the issue, it's and Orion Atlas, it's my imaging format.
I shoot slide film, and it takes a while to get through a roll, let alone getting it developed.
By the time I get good at it, I should be able to get good images with digital.

gah i love the horsehead nebula. what do you mean by "modified" d50?

quicksimon In reply to nonameface24 [2008-10-30 16:52:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much!! Modified means that the infrared filter has been removed from the camera. This allows a LOT more red to be captured. I wouldn't have been able to take this with an regular camera.. cheers m8!

Simon,

Good job.

Now I know what to expect through an 80mm refractor. I shot it through a 10" Schmidt-Newtonion with a 0.6x focal reducer (I think, if I'm not mistaken).

How's that Nikon holding up for you?

Regards,
H

H,

Thanks very much, my friend! Yeah, i remember your image of this very well! You used a lxdd 55?? I used to have the mount and 8" sn. Now I use the HEQ5 pro. Still haven't got myself organised to any autoguiding. I can manage 200 secs with the dslr and f5 refractor.

The Nikon is really good mate! I use it with an Astronomik UHC filter, and all seems to be cool! Looking to get a HA filter now. Spoilt for choice with cams now. I've got the Nikon, 350D and Atik 16IC. The atik is really sensitive, although not many pixels. Thanks H

..............................................

Holy crap. For some reason I didn't realize this nebula was in Orion. >___> Wow....

You have captured it beautifully! I love this one, but I have never seen it though a telescope yet. I want to badly! Great job!!

Thanks very much!! Glad you like this one. As H says, you'd need a MASSIVE scope to see this. The longer exposures brings it out. Be sure to check out his work; one of the best astrophotographers around.. especially his wide field pics

Athenazero In reply to quicksimon [2008-10-30 20:02:20 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... I guess the fact that I had no idea it was in Orion is because... It's SOO faint.^^ It's not really mentioned much.

I have checked out his work and it is just incredible!

And again, amazing job on this one!!

Athenazero,

Good luck on trying to see it through a telescope. It is an extremely faint object and most people fib when they say they can see it.

If you want to enjoy it, enjoy it in the form of Simon's image, (or the one I've taken myself -- I will be taking mine again soon). It is so faint, that I've barely been able to make it out when I've been in the deep bush of Australia.

Regards,
H

Heh, thanks for the luck... >_>

I knew it was small but I didn't know just how faint. I definitely do enjoy it in his image, and I'll be checking out yours!
