Description
Saturn and Jupiter both taken in the early hours this morning. I need someJupiter's moons showing are, Ganymeade (nearest to planet) and IO. If you think the weather gets bad here... The red(ish) spot on the bottom left of Jupiter is a 400 year old storm 3 times the size of Earth!

Really incredible shot, I must say. Were both planets actually that close together, or did you do some selective cropping and pasting to get them together? If not, how lucky you were!

Great job at those planets
I wish I could take such images too.

800 mm and 1600 mm with the teleextender but that's very short to do planetary images, isn't it? I think I have to mount the cam behind the eyepiece but I have no webcam. I any case I'll have to construct something to attatch the cam to the Telescope. I'm a bit lazy at the moment, but please tell me more Maybe it doesn't need that much efford. I wondered about buying a webcam but not for astroimaging...maybe I could use it for both, imaging and chatting...if I won't detach the lens
Or is it really, really adviced to choose the right astro-webcam??
But there are some other items on my shopping list...a IR filter to do non-astronomical pics, inspired me...his IR shots are great.

Sorry so late, you have probably forgotten all about this comment
Yeah,I think the focal length of your scope is a little short for planetary, I had the same prob with my 8"f4 newt! So I bought the 127mak f11 and now i have a 8" f6 newt! I have onlt ever used the meade lpi for plaetary images, it's good for sharop images but the resolution is naff!! If that makes sense. Most people use web cams, I'm thinking of it myself. Registar and regisatx would make short work of the processing!!

Propably they would!
Ehehe, I'm not this forgetful...although I must confess that I nearly forgot about this comment. These Meade LPI and DSI cams are rather cheap, I wondered if I should buy such a thing and see what how it performs. But I dunno...I don't like Meade and maybe I have a prejudice because I think that Meade is trying to make things more easy but in fat does the opposite thing...like Microsoft . In addition to that, I hate things which are "made easy" - the more buttons a thing has, the more versatile it is. That's my motto.

Oooooo...makes me happy. Wow, I really need a telescope. Seeing them in a photograph is one thing, but to be able to see them through a telescope in actual life truely must be breathtaking! That's so cool that the moons are also seen. ^_^

Thank you very much!!
This night, Jupiter looked awesome!! The air was really still, which is what you need for good planet viewing! You can see Jupiter rising about 22.30 in the south east. Good binoculars will show its moons, check it out!!

I'm so cheap that I don't even own binoculars. Well, I kind of do, a cheapie pair that's only like, 2x or something. Ja, I've seen Jupie in the sky at night...it's so bright. Oh yeah, I read in an Astronomy magazine that a comet should be coming around at the end of this month. Have you heard of that? I'm excited. I hope it will be a big comet~! Do you remember Hyakutake in the early 90's? That comet was H-U-G-E!!!
Hale-Bopp was awesome too.

You could borrow one of my scopes if you lived near me, I have 3 at the moment, one's for sale. I'm only selling it just so i can buy more astrophotography stuff My mum and dad think I'm mad, ha ha!!! I can't remember comet Hyakutake but I remember Hale Bopp, that was AWESOME! Wish I got a pic
Yeah, Comet Schwassmann-Wachmann is around next month travelling towards and past Vega! Can't wait, I'm going to have a go at imaging it, well both of them Do you know about it breaking up? There's Schwassmann-Wachmann B and Schwassmann-Wachmann C! I think they're about magnitude 9-10, so not very bright, especially to the naked eye
Worth a shot though, you'll have to buy a telescope

AyaneShinobi In reply to quicksimon [2006-05-16 05:59:33 +0000 UTC]
Schwassman is only a magnitude 9 or 10!?!?!? Well no wonder I didn't see it last night! lol. Seriously, I looked outside last night (before the moon came up) and thought, "Ooo, since it's dark right now, I want to see the comet!" I was at my mum's place, which meant my sis was there. So me & my sister were like, "Let's go see the comet~~!" We walked outside and...what comet!?!?! We were sad & mad. Ohohoho, but now that I've read what you wrote, no wonder I didn't see a damned thing.
I'm going to need to telescope? Well, I am happy to know there is going to be a star party hosted next Saturday. (Not this Sat, but next week's Sat.) Yay~! I'll get to see it then? It's breaking up? Wow! Awesome. I can't wait to see it. Plus, since Saturn, Jupiter, & Mars are out, I'm going to want the astronomer to show me the planets. I can't wait to see them in real life!

I'm sorry to hear you didn't see the comet I haven't seen it either
There was kind of an opportunity to see it but the moon was bright and it was lighting up a thin haze in the sky!! I tried with the telescope but no joy. It was hard because conditions were so bad, I couldn't see lyra under vega throught the haze. It's probably too late now
Your going to a star party!! That will be awesome , I hope you have clear skies!!

AyaneShinobi In reply to quicksimon [2006-05-24 23:58:21 +0000 UTC]
You haven't seen Schwassman either? Well bloody hell, where in the world is it! I keep on looking, even at different times of the night & don't see a darned thing. I don't understand. You think it's too late now? I thought it was supposed to be visible until next month. Oh God, I hope it's not too late. Darn you, Moon, for shining brightly when we were supposed to see the comet!!!
Yep, I'm going to a star party this Saturday. Yes, I hope there will be clear skies too! *Crosses fingers*

Hope it was clear for you! It's been pretty bad here for a loong time now

Star Party? What Star Party? There wasn't one after all! And that night, the sky was absolutely 100% perfect. And I mean Perfect with a capital P!!! I've never seen the sky so amazing: all the stars were shining bright, the planets were huge, I could see everything...yet there was no star party. I don't know what the hell happened. It was supposed to be at 9 p.m, & me, my mum, & sis drove out to the site (25 miles away from my mum's house) & there wasn't anything at the state park. I guess it was cancelled. It sucked to drive out all those miles to find nothing. So yes, it was a total bummer.
So the comet...what happened to it? Did it disintigrate during that time when there was the full moon? That's no fair that we didn't get to see it.

omg that's just hideous!!
I'm sorry to hear you had to travel all that way and then no star party!! What the hell made them cancel it, especially on Perfect (with a big P) night?!!!!!
I'm not sure what has happened to the comet!! All I know is we didn't see it and that's poo!
Hope you get to have a good night under the stars soon!

Thanks Nilvar!!
I've tried Jupiter previously this year but it's been really low and the seeing conditions have been bad. I nearly didn't take this one!!
I have to move all my gear to the bottom of my garden in order to avoid a big tree After seeing Saturn looking good, i was about to pack away and I thought, go on then. It takes ages to set up
It was worth it though

That's because Jupiter is currently in opposition... gives nicely glow I'd say about -2 mag... btw... have You seen some Lyrids?
I've seen two... one was about -4 mag... and the second... well... much brighter... I ain't seen it directly... but seems to me that it was brighter than full moon...

quicksimon In reply to FoxMaq [2006-04-23 22:53:59 +0000 UTC]
it looked awesome this night!!
-4!!!!
I seen one this night It was near Jupiter and was burning up for ages!! Cloudy fri/sat night so haven't seen any since

FoxMaq In reply to quicksimon [2006-04-24 07:56:07 +0000 UTC]
-4 is nothing... I've seen Iridium flares stronger than that... but still... those were fine meteors. Slower than Perseides... must have been an older trail also, cause majority was about -2 to -4. I've seen something that might be a second fireball today before sunrise, but have to verify that.
