Description One of my favourite beauties in the night sky The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is 31 million light years away and 100,000 light years across. It’s now known that this is actually two galaxies interacting, as you can see. The larger of the two is NGC5194 and the smaller is NGC5195.

I already have this one in my gallery, but thought I’d post another as it was taken with a different, more narrow-field telescope, plus it’s a bit better See here….[link]

I know it looks a little purple, but found increasing the levels in the red and blue channel revealed more detail!!

This was taken in March with a C9 and Canon 350D.
50 images
60 second exposures
ISO 1600
Deepsky Stacker for stacking flats, darks, offsets and lights
Photoshop for final tweaking

Cheers!!!!!

I've heard that these two galaxies are very hard to be captured. well done
what type of a telescope did you use to make this photo?

Thanks very much! This galaxy isn't that hard, because it's quite bright; as far as galaxies go. I used a c9 on a HEQ5pro mount cheers

Nice, nice, longer exposures next time, will reveal more detail I think. And maybe use a coldpack to keep the camera cool, you get less noise that way

Thanks a lot mate! I really need to guide to get lober exposures; something I haven't yet done successfully. What could I use for a cold pack? Do you use one?

Kokone In reply to quicksimon [2007-05-28 07:55:15 +0000 UTC]

I used the standard blue gelpack you find in some medical kits or the gelpacks some women use for waxing their legs. It really helps on warmer days, tape the thing around the back of the camera, don't worry about the LCD, it can withstand a few degrees below zero (celcius that is ). You might fasten the cooling process by putting your camera in the fridge first.

Wow! Very lovely galaxy; I haven't heard and seen a double galaxy, awesome!!!
It makes me bealive in the possibility that in the middle of galaxies there was a very great star wich became into a black hole super masive; like a binary star but biggest!!!
