Okay, umm...this isn't going to make sense to a lot of people.Durring WWII, pilots would blame unexplainable malfunctions with their aircrafts on these little critters called 'Gremlins'.
Later, Roald Dahl and Disney get together and try to make a movie about these guys. Sadly, the movie never got off the ground.
But, Dahl's book did!
It's an awesome little story, and it even details a thing or two about Gremlin life--like Fifinellas (female Gremlins), and Widgets (baby Gremlins).
But, there was one small scene where a pilot is attacked by a swarm of high-altitude Gremlins--they look a bit different than their land-bound cousins, and were called Spandules.
And, well, and I kinda wondered what a female would look like.
So, presenting the Whispule: the first female Spandule fan art in existence!
I sort of gave her attributes of a British Fifinella, with the curly horns and large, sultry eyes. She also kinda has their attitude: a lot of those little ladies looked kinda like they were saying 'Hiya there, big boy!' (think of the old 1940's starlets.) I also tried to give her a sort of 'fuzzy' look to contrast with the course fur of the males. And, I gave her more of a white-to-silver-lined look, as opposed to the stormy black on a Spandule.
Whispules are a bit more playful and carefree than the rough-and-tumble Spandules. They breeze along like wisps of clouds, and their breath produces lovely, curly patterns of ice on solid surfaces. Their laughter sounds like the wind whistling as it blows across a fast-moving plane.

Thank you!
And, yeah, I can see where she'd look like Lum. I actually gave her a face similar to the Fifinellas in Dahl's book--the curly horns, sexy eyes and cute-yet-seductive expressions. And, what you said brings up another point--the male Onis in Takahashi's book where much more ferocious looking, while the females were delicate. The cloud-dwelling Spandules look goofy, but they come with a lot of thunder and hail. I tried to give this Whispule the softer look a cloud can have--but like the males, she can do a lot of damage. I guess she's also akin to the old-time style of mermaids in that respect, too.
Thanks! I love delving into underexplored subjects in fandoms! Gives me more room to be inventive.

Ooooh old-time style of mermaids! I love the mermaids-as-monsters mythology. It's so terrifying actually That's really interesting with the different types of gremlins, and as you said, the exploration of under-used subjects in fandom. Compared to vampires you've got an open field here

(He's wise to be cautious. You don't want to offend a Whispule. This one's rather impressed, though.) Whispule: 'My, aren't you bold!' *she giggles, but to humans, it sounds more like wind whipping at high altitudes* 'I'm Whispule Wilhelmina. Is there a plane or two we can crash together?'

(Right. I think Whispules are kinda like old-time mermaids. They can be sweet, but tick them off, and you're in big trouble.)
*she grins sweetly* "Hmmm...I must say, you truly are bold! Perhaps the bar, or a plane first, and we'll see what happens from there."
(You know, I never noticed that, but you're right! Where are their ears? I guess they could be like reptile ears, which are small and inward, but I could see horns doubling as ears, too. )
(I also imagine Spandule/Whispule courtship having to do with flight. He has to impress her with how well they can damage a ship together, or how well they can fly in formation.)

(like the mermaids in the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean movie...that's probably how a Whispule's voice sounds to a Spandule, too. )
*She takes his hand and giggles* "Lead the way, Jack."
(I think the plane crashing thing started during the war--it was fun, and they were pretty irritated by those big, tin birds always flying through their cloud homes. But, for the most part, I look at their courtship as similar to certain large birds of prey--their ways to attract a mate is a twofold process. First, he has to attract her attention. Then, if she likes him, he has to prove he can keep up with her. Whispules are smaller, so they can really zip and flit through the clouds.
Some birds of prey sort of have this ritual where the male and female zip faster and faster through the sky, and eventually dive-bomb back down to earth. It's a real test of love, endurance and valor--the male has to keep with her, and not chicken out and pull back up into the air. They get really close to the ground, and if they both make it and pull up together, he's proven his worth.
Of course, that's just birds of prey. I'm sure Spandules and Whispules do a lot of dating, too. And, crashing a plane together can be like a date. After the war, I'm sure they found other activities to do together. )

Wilhelmina purrs. "I'd be delighted."
(Yeah. Nothing says love like extreme aerodynamics and crashing stuff as a couple! I figure since a Spandule's world is up in the clouds, a lot of their activities revolve around flying--just like how we saw the Gremlins before their forest home was destroyed doing lots of interesting things on the ground.)

Jerry leads Wilhelmina to an abandoned plane, where other Spandules and Whispdules are hanging out, and he lets her go first and finds a place where they can see the sky from where they sit. He shoos Liam and Joesph to get them drinks and turns his attention to her.
"So tell me Wilhelmina. What do you do?"

Wilhelmina looks around interestedly. She hasn't been in this part of the world before. She has seen this kind of plane though. She smiles wryly. "I'm a Frost Whispule. During winter, when we can fly down to the ground, I'm one of the Whispules in charge of blowing frost patterns all over windows at night. During the summer months, I have a job fluffing home clouds. Jerry leans back and starts playing with a hail stone. "My friends and I track down war planes, and cause mayhem for them. We create ice on their windshields, throw snow at them when they're at the wrong flight level or if they're too close to us, create ice near the gas tanks so that it drains a bit faster and all the other stuff those pilots have to deal with when they're in the air."
Liam and Joesph return with their drinks, and are not pleased with Jerry's introduction. "Oh come on man. Tell her about our flight patterns, she'll be interested with that." Liam says, and Joesph nods his head in reply. Jerry's answer was that he coughed in his hand and looked of to the other side, his face going red.

Wilhelmina cocked her head to the side. He was laying it on a little thick. But, could that be a hint of desperation in the chill of his breath? Call it woman's intuition, but he was hiding something. She pulled her hand away--but not unkindly. In her mind, she rolled her eyes in exasperation. Thanks Mom. You just had to find some way to ruin the moment.

He looked at her once more and sighed. "I guess you think I am desperate for another relationship, but I don't know what to do after my last one. She broke up with me and I never knew why and I wish I did. That way, I could know what to do the next time I meet another Whispule." He looked and gave her a small smile, and whispered, "But I never said they were beautiful. You are the only one that's beautiful out of them all."
He sighed once more and looked away from her, slapping himself mentally. "There you go you idiot! You said you were bold but now look at you! You're at the mercy of the last Whispule that may or may not like you! Man up for Pete's sake and show her why you want her to yours!"

Even then, things were colder, and they could fly closer to the ground more often. Sometimes, they'd peek in windows and see humans--Vikings, I think these were called--singing while drinking their mead. There was something about it. "Dad would tell me of how Great-Grandfather would see these men--these Vikings--on the battlefield. They were so strong, robust, you know? They were so much larger and hairier than the humans we see now. They'd heave great slabs of sharp metal at their opponents, they'd laugh at danger, would drive their ships headlong into storms. Some even wore horned helmets that made them look kind of like Spandules themselves. And, in the end, they'd go home, to taverns, and they'd drink and sing. Their lives where hard sometimes. They'd loose comrades in battle, or lovers to sieges. But, in their singing, they'd embrace it, and move forward."

He never talked about us, but he still visited us no matter what.
"Or it could be because his father talked so much about the war and how those tin birds were bombing our homes and destroying the little air we breathed in. Ivan didn't know about that, but when he was old enough to join the war...We left. We just left with no explanation about why we did. Wilhelmina bit her lower lip. At first, she'd been curious about what it would be like to speak to a human, and about Jerry's statement that you could actually visit the land below in that part of the world during the fall.
But, as Jerry's story went on, she began to see that the war had taken it's toll on his life as much as her own family's. Now, he didn't even seem to be speaking to her anymore.
"I'm so sorry." She wished she knew what more to say. But then, who really knew what to say about things like this? Nothing like this has ever happened before! Since when did humans find ways to pollute the skies and tear through the clouds? Since when did forests that have been around for thousands of years get razed in a matter of days? Why were so many humans fighting in so much all of a sudden?
What happened? The world was changing so quickly. No one could keep up.
"I'm so sorry, I don't know what to say." But, she felt she had to do something. She took a breath and blew a strand of frost-mist into the air. It danced in lazy wisps between them for a moment before encircling and landing on Jerry's horns. Like a caress.

Wilhelmina had known he was bold. Still, she hadn't expected such a quick embrace.
He was so strong. Although Spandules are naturally built flat and thin to adapt the high pressure of their home-sky, Wilhelmina could feel the grip of well-used sinews beneath his thick fur.
He smelled of high-altitude blizzards, engine exhaust...and grief.
He shouldn't be doing this. She shouldn't be letting him do this. It was too early.
Heck, he was a Spandule, he'd most definitely know you don't jump the gun with a Whispule so fast and invade her space. Normally, his actions would have been considered bravado...but she could tell he was acting out of a need to be comforted.
How can an action be bold and vulnerable at the same time?
She wrapped her arms around Jerry's back and turned her head closer to his horns. What had Dad always said? Lifting a voice in song can raise your spirits also?
...something poetic like that.
She racked her brain for a few lines of a ballad the Whispules seemed to be fond of lately. She wouldn't sing all of it. It was too long, parts were too sad. But, her favorite part...she took another breath, and her voice sounded like the faraway echo of winds...
He came upon a night gale,
Layered frost upon his pelt.

Jerry blinked his eyes, remembering you shouldn't be going so fast with a Whispule like this. He'd been so stupid to forget that rule, the one rule his brother made sure he remembered everyday. He was about to let go, turn around and fly away, even without a sorry, until he heard her voice.
He came upon a night gale,

Did cause my heart to melt...
"What does that mean? What did she mean by that?" He thought and looked down at her once more. She was too beautiful for him, or for any Spandule, and he was now thinking that he was going too fast. So he let go, turned his head away and coughed in his hand, letting an awkward silence fill them.

Wilhelmina felt confused when he let go so abruptly. She hadn't intended to make him feel so embarrassed. She felt terrible. "I'm sorry, Jerry! I just never know what to do when people are unhappy. I'm not good at that kind of thing! I was just hoping to cheer you up."
Why was he looking at her like that? It was like he was looking at a goddess.
He was so strong...he had a dual heart of steel and warmth. What more could anyone ask for?

"I...I should be the one that is sorry Wilhelmina." Jerry replied to her, and looked down ashamed. "I guess that...I guess that no one has ever even tried to make me happy. Except for Ivan and Jack, but really? No one else has...not until you." He blushed when he said that, and tugged at his fur. He didn't think he was any good at this or not...

"You didn't do anything wrong." Although, in a since, she was lying. If she'd been offended, she would have bitten him. Any Whispule would have. It was their custom. But, he'd known that. He'd taken the risk anyway.
...was it wrong to admit she'd liked it?
But, his last statement caught her off guard. "Really?"

He looked back at her, and grasping on the last hope he had for love and he smiled weakly at her. "Yes. Yes I mean it. No one has every listened to my woes, except for Liam and Joseph who don't even know what I'm talking about. They probably do but I guess they don't know how to help." He sighs once more and runs a hand through his beard. "You somehow understand what I'm going through and I understand your pain...a bit I guess." He shrugged his shoulders and looked over at the sky, the sun setting down. Was it getting that late already?

When he stopped looking at her, she felt he was thinking of leaving. Wilhelmina realized she couldn't bear that. She was never very good at saying what she needed to say, but she felt if she didn't...she may never get another chance.
"I...do you know the story of the song I sang?" Darn, there she went again, talking about nonsense...but Wilhelmina felt she had to get it out. "It's a newer song---about a Whispule who fell in love with a Spandule...those where my favorite parts...but, not long after they meet, the war below starts invading our skies. He goes off to fight one night...and he doesn't come back. So, she hunts down that great tin bird, and she kills herself while crashing it."
She was rambling now, not really focused on anything. "I always sang the first part, but I never sing the end, I hate it too much--it reminds me of my sister-in-law."
Darn it, she never could get things out properly. Why was he looking at the sky? He had to listen--she grasped his hand a bit harder than she intended. "I think everyone's scared, Jerry. There are rumors that the humans are marrying younger and faster now--they think they should live in the moment, because they may never seen each other again.
I noticed we Whispules have taken a different approach--I can't speak for your last lady friend, but many of us have chosen to keep males at arm's length. There aren't as many of us, and we fall so hard when we fall in love, you know? We don't want to end up like the Whispule in that song!"
Great. She couldn't get anything right, could she? She had to fight the sound of her Mother's warnings echoing in her head. "But, sometimes I don't think we made the right choice."
He was bold. Very bold. She should be bold. Before she could stop herself, Wilhelmina grasped Jerry's face in both hands. "I'm scared, Jerry. I didn't like it when I lost my swarm."
And she kissed him on the nose.

"No...I don't know what the songs means." He said, still looking at the sky. He should probably get her back to where she was and probably help her find her way back. He was aware now of what she was saying, but he still kept looking at the sky, tears starting to form in his eyes. "So that is what the song means...She doesn't want me to get to close to her or fall in love with her because if I die...She'll die too for me..."
He listened to her, grasping every word she said. Suddenly, he was coming back to reality. "Everyone's scared? That could be true...Making the right choice?"
Then he felt her grasp his face and he stared into her beautiful, ivory eyes as she said, "I'm scared, Jerry. I didn't like it it when I lost my swarm." Then he felt her soft lips on his nose, as she kissed him on the nose.
He felt his face go red, he held his hands at his sides from grabbing out, reaching out to her, and just kissing her right there. But when she said she was scared, he choked out, "D-Don't be. I'm scared...and I want to protect with all that I have." He took her hands, placed them on his shoulders, leaned in and whispered, "I'm scared that I've fallen in love with a dangerous angel from heaven. And I'm scared to lose you Whispule Wilhelmina."
And he kissed her on the lips.

"Mmmf!" Wilhelmina expected the kiss...but it was still kind of a surprise. Her mother's warnings about not giving in too fast echoed in her brain and she resisted the urge to purr.
...she was only half-successful. Wilhelmina was sure Jerry was close enough he could feel the faint murmur in her chest...it was a tiny bit embarrassing.
After a long moment, she pulled away, and gave him a warm smile. "You can't be in love with me yet, Jerry. We've only just met." All the same she stroked the fur along his horns. "But, I wouldn't say no to being courted."

Jerry smiled, and blushed embarrassingly. He didn't mean to go that far, but he guessed he was caught up in the moment. He returned her smile, took her hands in his and asked, "Shall I escort you to your place Wilhelmina? We could arrange a date on the way there..."

This time, Wilhelmina accidentally let some purring slip from her throat. "I'd love that." And, her fur couldn't help but get just a little fluffier. "I've been living in a refugee cloud since I got separated from my swarm. It's not far from here."
