I do it differently too I use the hue/saturation tool and change the Edit drop box to whatever color the pupil looks like and then just shift click around the iris to get the color selected and drag the Hue slider. This particular picture has bad transition so it doesn't work too well.

I've done this plenty of times over and over but it seems not to have the real eye effect just a cheesy look , any ideas why that is ?

I don't know if this will help with realistic eye painting but its how I do it . . . I use a smaller brush that will fit in between the pupil and outer edge of iris, I use only a soft brush. I change the brush mode to color mode and reduce the opacity. By using the brush in colour mode you can color the eye any color you wish without marring the detail of the iris underneath. You can paint directly on your image this way.
Also if you're working with an image in which the eye details aren't as prominant as you wish . . . use the dodge tool; very small to fit in the iris area and load fractal brushes . . . I find the fractal brushes imitate the light ribbons or marbling in the iris quite well . . .

i pick big brush and press mouse button only one time...try not to paint with green (in my tutorial)...only one press wit big brush (same size as iris)
