Art trade for ~weirdlet . She wanted a picture of Pirates of the Caribbean's Davey Jones and his lovely pet Kraken.This piece took longer than I thought it would to color. I kept the palette really simple - browns and black, with some touches of goldenrod, and no more. The deep background is an acrylic and India ink wash.

Nice! I like the simple color scheme, makes it really look awesome. Proof that you don't always need retina-damaging colors to make a picture look good.

LOL - Thanks very much. I just have a prefrence for the retinally-searing stuff. This makes a fun change of pace, though. Strangely enough, it takes me almost as much time to work with a simpler scheme as it does one of the more complex ones.

Beautifully done, and the simple color scheme gives this picture such a warm, golden tone like one sees on those very old maps of the world filled with unexplored seas and undiscovered islands with a buried treasure somewhere on it. Plus, who wouldn't want to have a pet kraken to share all your adventures with?

It's such a pity that the Kraken doesn't have much of a part in the third movie. I missed seeing all those tentacles in action.

After closely examining this fanart, I noticed something, or maybe it's just my imagination...but by any chance is there an "R" on one of the Kraken's tentacles?

I don't do subdued color schemes very often, but it seemed most appropriate for these two guys, especially against the grungy red and black background. It was fun to kind of "mould" the guys up out of the background fluff.

LOL - You know, I never really got the sense that ol' Davey was all that bad. Personally, I think he's just a poor, heartbroken sod who needed a pet doggy - I mean, squiddy - to ease the grief.

I was getting Cthulhu jeebies all through Pirates of the Caribbean 2 - I absolutely loved how they did the Kraken's tentacles.

Thanks! That was kind of what I was thinking about initially, but since the undertones are cadmium red, I had to warm up the browns quite a bit, bringing them into the orange range so that the figures would pop forward properly.
