Description
Art trade for ~weirdlet . She wanted a picture of Pirates of the Caribbean's Davey Jones and his lovely pet Kraken. This piece took longer than I thought it would to color. I kept the palette really simple - browns and black, with some touches of goldenrod, and no more. The deep background is an acrylic and India ink wash.

Thanks. That's a great collection of work; I appreciate having mine included in your collection.

You can't keep away from the tentacles can you?
They strike a nice dynamic pose here though. And I like this bronze colour scheme. The colours are still rich and vibrant.

Thanks very much!
No, no, I like monsters with tentacles. They're fun to draw - so twisty and curvy! And after the hideous mess of Predator: World Cancer, I needed to do some more sedate colors for this one. I'd planned to use a limited color range from the beginning, but I wasn't sure whether I was going to go for reds or greens. Strangely, I settled on red-browns! That it worked out fairly well kind of surprised me.

Very cool. I love the color scheme, keeping it limited really worked. I always thought Davy Jones was a tad too colorful for his character... definitely a walking cartoon. ^_^

*snicker* I had no problem with the colorful nature of the cast... I just thought this would be a fun way to represent them (plus, it blended well with the background mess...)

Brilliant job on Davey, a little more meh about the Kraken. I think the suckers in particular could use a bit of detail instead of just being spots on the tentacles.

I'd considering making the Kraken's suckers look more dimensional, but in the end decided to go with a more decorative, stylized approach. They ended up looking like eyespots, and I rather like the effect in and of itself. It's all about stylization.

Thanks! The subtle color is something that I don't do all that often. I'm glad it worked out as well as it did.

I just love the way you colored this, it looks almost monochromatic. (whoa! big words!) And the background with the messy splatters there look good as well. It fits quite well.

Thanks!
Yeah, the nearly-monochromatic effect is definitely one of the effects I was shooting for. Or at the very least, a subdued analagous scheme based 'round the red and gold earth tones.

The squiddy guy, Davey Jones, is a character in a movie that just came into theaters.

Thanks very much! I enjoyed playing with a slightly more subdued color scheme for him. My poor browns rarely get such a workout.

Thank you! It's definitely different from my ususal high-chroma work, but it was fun to kind of mould it out of the background.

Eeeeee!!! Must.. see... third... movie..!!!
This is really, really awesome. I like the deep, yet somehow simplistic tones. Gives it a creepy quality that I think these two would certainly approve of!

Yes, you must see the third movie - In my less-than-humble opinion, it's the best of the lot (especially for the sheer weirdness).
And thanks! I wanted to keep the color scheme simple so that I could concentrate more on the dark and light values.

I have to agree with ~dragonstar10 , it does look like an old photograph.
Do you think that the people who made Davey and the kraken must've pulled a H.P. Lovercraft?

rachaelm5 In reply to Agent-Sarah [2007-06-04 00:03:19 +0000 UTC]
LOL LOL - Any time there's a giant squid, people like to point the finger at ol' Lovecraft. Yeah, I was getting Lovecraft vibes the whole time, but we gotta remember that the legends about the Kraken predate Lovecraft by several hundred years!

It is WELL worth the extortionist ticket price. I personally think the third movie is the best of the lot - especially for the sheer weirdness. And the costume design. Booyah!

I'm going to see it tommorrow, hopefully. And then I can't wait 'till July when Transformers comes out! When I was like, five, I use to run around with a little Optimus Prime doll/toy/whatever-you-wanna-call-it. He was my hero~ Sad was the day my Dad ran him over with the lawn-mower...

Optimus Prime is a hero among heroes. He's always been among my very favorite characters. The Noble Semi-Truck, American Hero... Yeah, I can hardly wait for Transformers. The robot designs look absolutely spectacular.
