Description
Trade piece for . This is just a Predator character he described for me. He left the color scheme to my choosing, which is always a bit risky...Ink and Polychromos pencils. I *still* don't think the contrast is working quite right, but I'm still learning how to use these things...

Thank you. I am not as pleased with the colors on this one. I was trying out some new, hard-lead colored pencils and still didn't quite have the hang of them. They don't layer the same as my soft and squishy Prismacolors!

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,
Or close the wall up with our English dead!
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility,
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger:
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favored rage,
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect,
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon, let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a gallèd rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swilled with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English,
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof,
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
20 Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument.
Dishonor not your mothers. Now attest
That those whom you called fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture. Let us swear
That you are worth your breeding, which I doubt not,
For there is none of you so mean and base
That hath not noble luster in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot.
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry βGod for Harry, England, and Saint George!β
-Henry V Act 3 Scene 1

It's funny how much of that works as a metaphor for Predators, innit? I was only familiar with the opening line, and once I hunted down the full sililoque I was stunned by how well it could fit for the Warrior archetype.

I think the colors look great! I like the idea of red armor - looks quite nice. The blending in the background looks really good, too.

Thanks very much!
I've seen some other folks do a bang-up job with red armor and I didn't have one like that in my collection. I think that the color contrast could probably be better on the armor itself, but the Polychromos do not stand for abuse the same way my Prismacolors do; alas!

I love the red armor on him.
And I keep misreading the title as "Into The Beach".

You know? I'd be lying if I said I don't envy your skills. I love how much attention you pay to the detail and which colors collide better with the theme of your pictures. I also love how you have him up in the air, looking like he's ready to pounce on some unsuspecting victim. I certainly wouldn't want to be the one who stands underneath him looking around idly when all of the sudden *SLICE* I'm chopped up into sushi bits before I have the time to say "FTW??!?!"

It's taken me a very long time to get my artistic skills to their present level. I also know that I still have a lot to learn. There are many artists whose amazing work leaves me feeling like a beginner! I study their great work, though, so that I can make my own work even better. Sometimes I even succeed...

sometimes is a large understatment, rachael mah dear. ^__^ You're work makes me gape in wonder, for I know I severly lack the patience to draw such detail like all your work is just oozing with! Well...I'm usually too impatient to draw a picture at all, really! (and yet I'm in art this year....hrmm...*rubs chin* that class will be interesting. Good thing I'm in good graces with the art teacher! )

I had to read the title a couple times to make it make sense. First I saw "Predator:into the bath" Then i tried to read it again and it said Beach... 3rd time it finally said Breach
I really like his armour design best.
Is whoever is looking at the picture his next victim?!

LOL LOL - I may have to do spoof pieces with those titles. I love the idea of "Into the Beach!" and "Into the Bath!"
...I do seem to remember my mom yelling that at me with some frequency when I was little... "Into the bath, Rachael! NOW!" For some reason, she just didn't want me to go straight to bed after I'd spent the afternoon out rolling around in the grass and dirt.

O:
But Rolling in Dirt and Mud like a pig is THE BEST PART of being a little kid!
Baths make me paranoid because the room is very small and I'm afraid the light will go out and I'll have to jump out of the tub but then hit my head on the counter because the room is to small...
I wonder how a Pred would act at the beach....

LOL - Yer LUCKY this time! I wasn't using the Prismacolors... The hard-lead Polychromos force me to be a lot more subtle with my color choices, and I have to blend them more softly as well. With the Prismas, I can sculpt in day-glo and get away with it.
π: 0 β©: 1
Raptor-Chick In reply to rachaelm5 [2007-08-21 16:45:54 +0000 UTC]
The retina-searing is neat, but this is a good change too. Prismacolors are amazing, but I have real problems with the leads breaking horribly on me. Are the polychromos any better?
π: 0 β©: 1
rachaelm5 In reply to Raptor-Chick [2007-08-24 22:56:39 +0000 UTC]
The Polychromos are much, MUCH better. I've not had any trouble with broken leads with those guys, and being much harder pencils I don't go through them nearly as fast. However, the color layering is still lighter and softer than I really like, so I tend to switch back and forth between them, depending on how the mood strikes me.

Very nice job with the coloring, Rachel. It retains the directness and intensity of the original. The simple waves in the background work very well.

I wanted to keep it simple and direct (and hence get it done fairly quickly), so the direct contrast and simple background seemed like the best solution.

*purrs* Love your use of colors. Actually I your colors in this one. Whether you were intending to or not the play on the major complement color scheme with the armor and skin is fantastic. Complemented nicely with an analogous background, and the hint of blue in various parts creates a wonderful balance of hues. Yumm....

rachaelm5 In reply to ittybittybits [2007-08-20 21:29:39 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
I was going for a fairly simple contrasty scheme since I don't have a good handle on my value ranges with the Polychromos pencils as yet. This seemed like the best way to both unite the elements and play them off one another at the same time.

I still think that the armor needs more depth, or better value rendering at least. I still need to get my Polychromos and my brain to speak the same language.
