Description

Some may remember back in 2016, I published a series of art with bits of text describing the various draklings and dragons of my and my pal's worldbuilding project, Threa, starting with the truzkul .

A couple years ago we started with Threa: Rehatched, a complete rewrite of the world to better flesh it out, have more variety and diversity among the world, and make it more wild and mysterious. We've finally reached a point where we can start 'releasing' the new versions of the life in the world as small tidbits!

This series is written as excerpts from Dawntreader's Guidebook, a novel written by the trezlin/drakling Tavra Fangrender under a pseudonym to avoid persecution by her own kind. The first entry is on the wolshaks, a beast people that live in the forests and fields of her homeland, often getting into conflicts with her people.

The wolshaks are their own people, priding themselves on their prowess, strength, and the glory of the hunt.

All in the Verdant Valley know the howls of the wolshaks. Brawny beasts filled with unmatched physical strength, they can crush the skull of a drakling with one hand. Most are familiar with them through their raids on the outskirts of Gren lands, inciting fear and causing untold amounts of bloodshed.

While well-known and numerous, the raiding packs are only a stain on the face of a large collection of intricate social groups that make up the rest of the wolshaks. Many do live peacefully alongside the Gren, trading with the nations in the valley, or otherwise live quietly far from civilization. They make their homes in the woods, plainsand caves of most of the world, living as part of nature. I do not know how long they have crossed these lands, but it appears they may have arrived far before any Gren ever has.

Wolshaks have a rich oral tradition spreading the stories of ancestors down to the next generation, weaving histories potentially thousands of years long. They respect those before them and the rare elders that outlive their kin. Few wolshaks live to old age and those that do prefer to die in glory rather than fade away in frailty.

Their physical form, as mentioned, also radiates might and instills a sense of awe. No drakling can match their raw strength - even the smallest wolshak will tower over the tallest of the Gren when on their hinds. They are, however, ungainly on their hinds and prefer to move in a four-legged gait, running swiftly like animals on all fours. They only move to their upright stance when stable or able to walk slowly, using their free hands to use primitive tools.

Even without the dexterity of a drakling, wolshak create jewelry of sorts. The beasts decorate themselves with the trophies of their greatest hunts and accomplishments - which usually are pieces of a large kill, such as the tooth of a forest dragon. Raiding packs are often decorated with skulls, teeth, and other grisly reminders of their murders.

It is worth noting that wolshaks also have command of a few forms of magic. Dark, nature, and earth magic flows through their blood - even more commonly than in my own kind. However, packs separate on these lines, refusing to interbreed. I've not yet seen the earthen wolshaks, but there are many territorial lines between dark and nature packs in the forests of my home of Vandell.

Most curious are the wolshaks that have decided to give up their traditional way of life to live among us. They often become mercenaries, bodyguards, or even hired warriors of nobles. Some face suspicion from the locals, considering the amount of blood on the hands of the wolshaks, but most are able to become respected members of the community. These wolshaks are considered strange even by their own kind, who do not understand why they would give up their traditional ways to live among completely different beings.
