Description
I've been feeling overwhelmed lately with my research paper and preparing for school this coming week. I decided to take a break and 'mediate' by finishing this. This was for the Steampunk Calendar collaboration at the Manga Revolution site. I chose February because it has Valentine's Day. Anywho, this is my character, Seth, the female version. (LOL, for those who don't know, my OC is bi-gender).Initially, I had trouble with a color palette. Then I decided to stick with greens and reds to get those brown tones, I mixed in some other colors since Seth is a colorful type of character. And believe it or not, I didn't blend the colors. This is done in the same technique as "Seth aka Rainbow". I'm basically using flat colors against flat colors. I think I'm getting better at this technique. This image is way more innovational than my previous work. And speaking of which...
Wow, what detail, eh? XP I really wanted to do a proper background. I got inspired by Islam pattern work and wanted something like that. (No reference was used for this, btw). This is called Seth as Venus since it's paying a tribute to Venus. There are subtle esoteric messages here that I'll leave only to the art majors out there to find. ^_~ Enjoy decoding it!
After doing this, I so want to finish my DMC fanfic so everyone knows what happens to Seth in that story. Alas, I got other things to take care of.

Then I so have to see AvP2. I loved the Predator films. The first Predator movie was the only Arnold film that I took seriously. And the second one warmed my heart.
Oh man, I had an art teacher that looked down her nose at me. We had one assignment that required us to bring in items that fueled our creativity. I brought in several items, each displaying a different style of comic art. Everything from Takaya Miou to 30 days of Night. I ended up getting a D because she claimed it didn't have enough variety. Everyone else was bringing the same Impressionist paintings. And they got passing grades. Why is Pop Culture so scary to them? Or digital media? I had another art teacher freak out when I indicated my switch from traditional to digital. Isn't art supposed to be about one's own personal journey to better expressing themselves?
There is. I work hard not to make my characters Mary Sues. But if someone thinks that they are I won't be able to change their mind. I'll just keep writing.
Walter: Yay, I can't wait to go.

Definitely, see AvP2. Honestly, I hate how they raped the Predator series. But from a cheese factor, AvP2 scored a nine. It's got B-movie quality and plot all the way through; from clueless teens to women showing skin.
I think art teachers are intimidated by the pop culture. They're still hanging to the past. The thing is, there are more and more ppl like you and me. We're more diverse and accept all types of inspirations than the typical norms. There comes a point when these teachers need to realize that pop culture is here to stay and will have more influence to us than some contemporary art about a soup can.
You can always share your stories and never fear I'll think of your characters as a Mary Sue. I love Walter. It's funny how a design like that blows my mind. ^_^
BTW, I'm thinking of posting a nude drawing of Seth soon. It's got more to do with anatomy than p0rn though. I love how it looks and since I made this account to post figurative/nude studies, then I might as well post it here. It's kinda sad I can't post the yaoi pics though. LOL, believe it or not, but drawing sex scenes are super hard! O_O You can't lots of anatomy challenges, not to mention, making sure everyone's in porportion. It's kinda funny that I draw yaoi nowadays just to work out my anatomy than to satisfy some pleasure from it.

Oh, now I have got to see it.
That has been the case with most of the art teachers I've come across. They have their heads stuck in the sand and don't even know that a revolution is happening all around them. Most of the artists that changed painting back then didn't even go to art school. Van Gogh, self taught, Leonardo Da Vinci, learned painting as an apprentice, the list goes on. But I guess they don't get it.
Yay! I shall try my best. :bows: I won't let you down.
I just had to pull Walter from my computer screen. But I think you should post that one up. I heard that sex scene anatomy was very hard that is the reason for all the disembodied penis floating in so many hentai and yaoi manga. I'm glad that you are trying to avoid that staple. Keep up the good work!

Yeah, most of the art has really been messed up since Andy Warhol stepped into the picture and told us soup cans were as thoughtful as a Leonardo Da Vinci. Sure, the concept was interesting. But after getting hit with it over a billion times, the joke gets old. So yeah, I think the arts have done down a horrible road; worse, it's trying to convert virgin artists to continue its sad crusade.
For me, I think sci-fi might be a good movement to go towards. It's all about transcendental thought; of seeing a future that bypasses culture and religion. You either get something like Star Trek, where everyone wears the same thing, or something as diverse as the Star Wars series. It's a fascinating topic to explore. Unfortunately, it's seen as too goofy and fictional. But hey, mythology has just an important message to say as any Jesus's lecture. The problem is, no religious person wants to equate Jesus with the Greek gods; which is kinda funny since Christians adapted a lotta Greek stories prior to converting to Christianity when it first came out.
Thanks! I wanted to post it up today, but alas, my stupid homework got the best of me. I might tomorrow though. Maybe. (fingers crossed). LOL, the floating penis! You're so right! It's easier to draw tentacle action as well, than have two guys engaged together. The anatomy and porportion have to be spot on, lest someone be mistaken for the Jolly Green Giant or something.

I think the lowest point of modern art had to be the guy who came out and declared that the Old Masters had traced their works instead of using their eyes. He was particularly hard on Leonardo Da Vinci. I mean you can rent a book showcasing Da Vinci's awesome powers of observation. (btw: His notebooks are amazing) But this man insists that they all traced. I find it funny that it is mainly illustrators and digital painters that respect the works of the Masters more than most modern fine artists.
It is a good movement to go towards. All speculative fiction is. It allows you the chance to make entire worlds and explore issues in a way that is not too heavy handed (if you have a big enough imagination). I have had too many teachers that would find out I write then give me advice on how I should write on my serious things. I even had one teacher tell me that black people don't write sci-fi, horror, or fantasy. And I had a church member tell me that those genres are the work of the Devil. I had to tell him that the stories in that genre made more sense to me than a great deal of the Bible did. Jesus also shares a similarity to the "pagan" goddess tradition of The Consort who always dies during the winter and is reborn at the beginning of spring. There are so many religions that Christianity stole stuff from that it is hilarious.
Homework is always getting in the way of the good stuff. I can't wait to see it. Believe me I always lol at the floating penis. It takes me right out of a story when it shows up. Tentacles are only slightly less lol-worthy. It does which is why I have always stuck to writing sex scenes rather than drawing them. Oh no, you have birth a Jolly Green Giant lemon into existence.

My art instructor, who used to be a curator at a museum here, told me that Da Vinci was godlike in that you couldn't determine where he started. Usually, artists draw and leave some kinda trace on where they first began the drawing. Da Vinci's pencil blending work was so superb that, to this day, no one can figure out how he started in his drawing. To say he *traced* his work seems something only an idiot would say.
Basically, it just comes down to artists who CAN'T draw, so all they can do is degrade the old masters who knew their stuff. By devaluing them, then assholes like that guy you pointed out won't have to feel bad that they really suck. It's sad but true. It's why today's "contemporary" artists can keep turning up crap and call it art. There's this angsty artist in NY who displayed her "work" at the museum there many years ago. Her "work" was basically her unmade bed. >_> I mean, really, wtf.
I believe what my instructor said was totally accurate. As interesting as conceptual work is, not any of them can invoke that same emotional response as a Michaelangelo sculpture. I don't care how awesome the concept may be, practically *any* culture feels something for a David sculpture than some unmade bed that *supposedly* represents everyday life.
I think what you said last time was true. There is an art revolution happening, only, it's taking place here, on Deviantart, MangaRevolution, and countless of art-based sites. Hell, including LJ! The thing is, no one from the museums realizes it because all the old geezers working in those musuems haven't a clue on how to turn on the power button of their computers! They still believe the art world is excluded to only an elite and selected group. Bullshit. Half the stuff here on DA is ten times better than the art in musuems today. Pop culture is alive and well. Thousands of people from ALL OVER THE WORLD are celebrating it through fanart, sci-fi fantasy, etc, including those from the industry. My art teacher in my other class would like to believe that there's nothing that can really unite us, but she's wrong. Here, we're able to communicate with other artists and audiences who speak various languages. They may never leave a comment due to a langauge barrier, but we all know what a 'fave' button and smiley faces means.
Anyway, I get the same attitudes you get when I tell ppl I love sci-fi and horror and fantasy. Somehow, my ethnic group feels I let them down by not concentrating on more social issues. The thing is, each of my pieces taps into it. But unlike social artists, I don't balantedly tell people that. I'm sure as you read Monster, you probably noticed a few prejudices against homosexuals here and there. Yet, those moments are subtle and are there for only those who care to look into it. I'd like to think of myself like george romero. He has zombies in his movies, but if you look closely, you can see he's taking a stab at society.
You, too, are exercising your beliefs via your characters. The fact you have a bigender character too means you're ready to move beyond rigid gender archetypes that have been established so far. Don't let those ppl get to you because, as I said, sci-fi/horror/fantasy are pretty much the sister of mythology, which is the twin of religion. Christians can complain about sacrificial stories, but then, there's the story of God telling Abraham to sacrifice his son too. Not to mention, humans distort stories. Orgies of Dioynsis were definitely taken outta context. Similiarly, the "battle" against homosexuality is nothing more than humans distorting the message of the bible to suit their needs.
I'm hoping to post Seth by Friday, BEFORE the hurrican arrives. O_o It's gonna be ugly this week and I'm glad I don't have class this Friday. But yeah, I want to post a new work here, even if it's just a sketch. I really need to put more stuff in this gallery, lol.
It's so funny. I was thinking of a DMC yaoi I read and... you're totally right: there *are* a lotta floating penis around!
Seth: :rotfl:

You're right about Da Vinci, only an idiot can look at his work and claim he traced.
If there were a way to fave comments I would fave this one because you just said everything I wish I could have told my art teachers. This is the revolution that you hear so many of them crying for. People all around the world can come together and exchange ideas. My world music class even touches on this fact. My textbook mentions how the Internet is changing music. If my music teacher can understand this then so should art teachers.
I have seen some the pieces that man had painted. And well if he went to an art school to improve his abilities then he should get his money back. They were terrible. I wasn't impressed by him or the entire modern art scene. No matter how hard my art teacher tried to get our class to see it, no one did. So you're right, show someone the David and everyone sees it as the work of art that it is. No so much with a modern art piece. (I so have to use that excuse now for having a messy room.)
I hate that. I want to grab my copy of Jemiah's books and show them that yes minorities do write sci-fi/fantasy/horror. When you bring up Octavia Butler they put on a blank face. What makes people think that only certain ethnic group has permission to write in certain genres. I did notice that in Monster and I liked it a lot. So many yaoi comics don't even bother to touch on those issues. It's like hey guys we're totally together now and everyone is so accepting. I'm glad that you choose to be more realistic. I love the moment when Chewbacca was bitching about Seth and Dante's relationship and then was asked if he would say it to his face. That and the dodgeball line cracks me up. George Romero is a god and I bow to the awesome that is his zombies. Well bow and then run. He makes such subtle stabs at important issues.
Thank you, when I mention to most people that I have a race of vampire that can change their gender they freak. And they freak even harder when I mention that the gender of their partners doesn't matter to them so much. A lot of them scream for their mommies when I tell them that as a result there is no seme/uke, butch/femme, or boy/girl relationship dynamic between them. Others toss their cookies when I tell them that my vampires don't sparkle and aren't virgins. In other words, I completely agree with you. I just like to see how people react to them. People are always distorting the truth of things. And it's so sad. Homosexuality is natural, if it wasn't then it wouldn't occur at all.
Yeah, I can't wait to see him. I hope that the storm isn't that bad.
Yes, it is like the attack of the glowing, floating peens.

Yeah, it's funny how major events get overlooked. it's only when we see it in hindsight that we appreciate the event. But that has always been the case for major events like art trends. I'm glad is steering away from conceptual type of stuff. A soup can is nothing compared to a Da Vinci drawing. A total stranger of the arts will totally see that to be true.
Yeah, I had a similiar freak out when I told my art class about my character Seth. But so what? Walter and Seth are awesome characters. Both have taken away the old rules of archetype. Now we get to move past stereotyped roles and get to the core of what it really means to be man or woman. Even more, both you and I can look outside the box. It's already fun right now.
Gaaaaaah! Look out for the floating penis! O_O

I know. And I'm glad about it moving away from this state of stupidity. I'm sick of walking into a gallery and wondering how someone's trash glued onto a canvas is supposed to be art.
I like bigendered characters and like the embarrassment of riches that they offer freedom wise. And I completely agree. If I cared about what others wanted me to do, I would have swallowed the pills and became a drone of convention. Or stopped writing.

Aww, colored version is so much more beautiful! Steampunk inspirations are now visible... I love the pipes. My only complaint is that the umbrella looks a bit flat, like the center wasn't bent inwards. ^^'
I hope you haven't gone mad after all these details!

yeah, that umbrella appears flat, don't it? The thing is I kinda liked the flat look so i left that part alone. In fact, there are a lotta things in this pic that are hypothetically wrong but done for design's sake. This was sorta an exercise in color. Some areas are done pretty simple and flat, which is a tribute to some of Matisse's work.
LOL, mad? What makes you say that?
