okay, so when one layer is grouped with another one, you can only paint over the non transparent part?

No problem. Oh, for later versions after PS7(all the CS1-4) I think the shortcut for grouping is CTRL+ALT+G rather than CTRL+G

Would this tutorial work on a different program other than PS? Such as...Gimp? I've always wanted to learn how to use layers but I don't use PS (too poor to get one) so I don't know if it applies to the one I use. D:

Some of the icons and abilities might be a different. I haven't really worked with GIMP. But basic layer-format is always bottom-goes-under-the-top.

Congratulations for creating such a "friendly" tutorial.
You explained the layers basics in a way that is easy to grasp, I really wish I had come across such a tutorial when I first started using photoshop!

Yeah...layers were something I found quite difficult to understand, and a few other people I know have the same difficulty. I wish there was a tut like this around when I started too.

Well either way, I hope it can apply to other programs.
Someone wants me to make a tut on masks next. That'll be fun >>; Since I never use masks.

Well, I know how to use them, I just never need them personally. Think of masks as a selection where you can change the opacity and hardness of the edges of the selection. They can be useful, especially for people that would rather paint on the places they don't want covered rather than using the Lasso tool.

Most of the things should work the same. It's usually the layout and sometimes the symbols that changes.

XD I didn't know about the grouping layers thing, I had a look through CS2 as it operates a little differently and finally found the same thing in layer=>add clipping mask
I think I'll be using that a lot X3

Ah, I hate it when they change the name when there's no reason too. But yeah, Grouping layers are one of my favorite things about Photoshop, and the main reason why I haven't gone to other programs with a layering feature.

Thank you so much for making this tutorial I was given a tablet for Christmas that came with the photo shop program. I also have paint shop but I have never totally figured out how to use the layers properly.
This is so far the most helpful tutorial I've seen!
Thank you again very much.
