Description

Operation Bridgework was the name of a UNITE operation led by Enforcer Nicolia Kansa . For the longest time we were tasked with capturing the extra-dimensional being known as Magilily. While previous attempts at brute force proved ineffective, the Enforcer managed to draft a more unorthodox plan. It was simple enough; take hostage on of Magilily’s acquaintances and in exchange for their safe return, her unconditional surrender to UNITE authorities. While I was usually against such a strategy, Magilily had escaped our clutches one time too many. Desperate times called for desperate measures. Six of our more senior agents were brought in for this operation.

Our surveillance network had noted on a number of individuals that spent a substantial amount of time with her. As such, it was a toss-up on who would be the target. In the end we randomly decided on a seven year old girl by the name of Sophia Neu. Through a process of luck and near misses, we managed to capture Sophia when she was alone. As expected with most children her age, Sophia was unable to put up a fight against our agents. That evening we brought her to our temporary base of operations: a warehouse at the old industrial estate.

We were all set to commence the next phase of the plan at around 2100 hours, when an explosion rocked the compound. At first we assumed it was a rescue attempt, but we have not yet sent out a message demanding Magililiy’s surrender. Nicolia ordered all of us to scout the source of the explosion. Not far from the warehouse was a large burning crater, explosive fragments lay scattered around.

All of us were on high alert when one of our agents was suddenly sent flying. Another sprawled from an impact and collapsed to the ground. We were being attacked from the shadows! I could barely make out a figure from the darkness of night, but it seemed like that of a young female. Never had I ever seen an individual display such speed and stealth in my life. The rest of us tried to engage the perpetrator with stun batons only to be on the receiving end of a flurry of punches and kicks. Before long I realized I was the only one left standing. With the situation growing desperate, I pulled out my gun. In response the figure, illuminated by the flames of the crater, unsheathed her katana. Her eyes bright red and her long hair flowed visibly in the wind. Fear was not going to get the better of me. I fired a shot and…. Missed?! The figure continued to dance past all my shots with supernatural ease and closed the distance. As she got closer I realized who it was.

Merida Lauren. Daughter of the infamous Lauren family, and sole heiress of Lauren Machina Industries (LMI).  It is hard to forget a face like hers when she is the poster girl for the company’s monthly tech magazine. I say ‘infamous’ because while LMI is on the global forefront of robotics, and weapons engineering, there are those who say the family’s wealth was ill-gotten. From warmongering, to supposed human experimentation, if you dug deep into any conflict, no doubt you would find LMI at its roots. As such, the Lauren’s have no shortage of enemies over their years of business. It’s even said that they have their own private army and hit men corps as direct response to any potential threats. However all this was going to change when the family’s high security manor was broken into. The only thing stolen that night was their family heirloom - a small shield of sorts. Left behind at the crime scene was an anonymous note which threatened harm against their then six year old daughter. It was a severe warning for them. After that incident, Merida who was usually never seen without her parents at corporate events and classy parties vanished from the public eye; with no public announcement from her family or the company. It was not long after when reports starting coming in of an individual of similar likeness to Merida was spotted at the site of multiple shadow beast attacks. No positive confirmations were made as eye witnesses claim she disappears as quickly as she appears.

I did not believe the stories at first. Contrary to the ruthless, charismatic, businessman that was her father, Merida was known by many around her to be a mature, yet soft spoken young woman who rarely said more than a few words when interviewed. The idea she had suddenly become a shadow beast-slaying ninja was laughable. I was about to be proven wrong.

In less than a few seconds she was an arm’s length of me, her blade even closer. I knew at that instance that I was a dead man, but instead of following through her sword swung upwards and cleaved through the barrel of my gun like a hot knife through butter. That feat caught me off guard and the next thing I knew I was hurtling to the ground by a kick from the petite girl. She was certainly not pulling her punches. Curled on the ground wincing in absolute pain, I could see Merida heading towards the warehouse, and Nicolia was the only thing standing between her and the hostage. Forcing myself to stand, I slowly staggered inside the building and heard the sounds of clashing steel echoing along its walls.

Nicolia was engaging Merida using her Type-14 CIWS, a specially crafted long sword used prominently by UNITE  Enforcers. At first both women were equally matched. Though I had no doubt in Commander Kansa’s abilities, it looked like she was starting to falter. Merida’s strikes were a constant, never ending fury; like a typhoon battering endlessly on a coastal town. I decided to use the opportunity to try and relocate Sophia elsewhere. In hindsight, I probably should have gagged her before trying to relocate. Her cries for help caused Merida to promptly dash over and deliver a knee to my gut, causing me to finally lose conscious.

I had no idea how long I was out cold. By the time I came through, Sophia was gone; the only thing left was the chair, her restraints, and a warehouse scared with a lot of blade strikes. Nicolia and Merida were nowhere to be found. I looked around the compound to find her, but to no avail. Suddenly a scream was heard in the distance. I instantly recognized it as the Enforcer’s and feared the worst. I rushed to the entrance of the compound and saw her on the ground in a pool of her blood, a knife blade lodged in her side. She was conscious and in pain. Merida stood next to her, an ice cold glare on her face. Her katana was inches away from her head prepared to deliver the final blow. My heart sank, completely helpless to the situation. At that moment Sophia’s voice cut through the silence. Tugging onto Merida’s sleeve, she begged her not to do it; her eyes swollen with tears. What seemed like a moment lasted forever. Merida eventually sheathed her katana. Kneeling next to Nicolia, she told her to never touch her sisters ever again, a look of pure venom on her face as she ripped out the dagger from her side causing Nicolia to let out another cry. The two promptly vanished into the night without a trace. With the coast clear, I quickly came to her aid.

We returned back to UNITE headquarters where she was quickly treated for her wounds. Thankfully the injuries of our other agents weren’t too serious. Nicolia on the other hand just barely faced death and lived. The dagger’s blade missed her vitals by mere inches, though I’m starting to think it was intentional on Merida’s part. Her condition is currently stable, but it looks like she won’t be doing any field work for the time being.

The events of that night concluded the following: Merida Lauren is still out there. But we do not know if she is still affiliated with LMI or the Lauren family. Her statement seems to make it clear that she sees Sophia as family. I was confused at first, seeing as Sophia’s last name was ‘Neu’. Why then would she see her as a sister?  How was she able to track our location so quickly? And most importantly, how is this all related to Magilily? Further encounters with the Neu family would reveal something most interesting.

Long description box is long. Wow this took longer than expected. It feels good to flex my story writing skills again after such a long hiatus from Sentinel Revelations. While a simple picture would have been sufficient, I wanted to add on a bit more weight to the scenario and came up wit the idea of a government task force that goes up against the Neu Family but constantly failing. I guess such inspiration can only flow when you have a charcter as badass as Merida. I might just do a similar styled story for the rest of their family members as well.

Now that I look at it again, the angles are a bit wonky. Oh well. Practice, practice, practice!

I'm surprised that even after they kidnapped her, Sophia doesn't want her sister Merida to kill Nicolia.

I think the last thing Sophia wants is for her older sister to be labeled a murderer.

Wait, so the LMI were involved in 'supposed human experimentation'...
Does that mean they were also responsible for Project Kin Lynn-dis (PKL)?

I can't be too sure at this point, for all we know it could just be a red herring. We'll just have to see when B-Star releases more information on her background.

Thank you so much! I'm very glad you like it!
I hope you are okay with some of the creative liberties I took with the setting. If theres anything that contradicts your current canon, do let me know and I'll change the story accordingly.

Nice to know that you like stargazing! Clouds are such a pain to get right. Its one of those things that is constant work in progress for me. Haha

This is a badass story, I loved every bit of it and you did a great job on describing the characters from the Neu House AU. 😁👍🏻

Why would a government task force like U.N.I.T.E. want to capture Magilily, and I wonder how often would the Neu family come face to face with the task force?

Thanks you! Glad to know you enjoyed it.

Oh you know those government types. Always wanting to harness powers like these for their own agendas. The things they could do with her ability to create portals at a whim are limitless.

I'd like to think that UNITE is, for the most part, focused on getting Magilily rather than the other sisters. However the other Neu's will always be around to keep foiling their plans!

Btw, I like the design of the daggers you gave her. Those are indeed some mean blades!
