Technology File - UNTC-12 Pegasus Aerial Hauler
Written by Kiev Yarkov,
UNTD Lab 1 Chief Scientist
Not long after the development of the UNTX-41 Spectra was completed, we hit our first roadblock: how do we deliver such a weapons platform swiftly into an engagement zone? The most logical answer would be to have the Spectra airlifted to the front line, but up until recently, UNITE had no suitable delivery system for the job. A number of aircraft were tested during the first phase of the Spectra's run, however none of them reached the minimum benchmark required for an effective deployment. What we needed was an aircraft with not only the lifting power, but the also the speed and control needed to transport the Spectra and its expensive equipment.
This would prove to be quite a tricky situation as we did not have the time to wait for design bids from other countries. However our research counterparts from Lauren Machina Industries (LMI), who up till this point, were key players in the Enforcer Program, were willing to lend a helping hand. I'm not particularly fond of the idea of LMI constantly getting themselves involved in UNITE's business, but I have to admit that the Laurens do have some rather unique concepts in mind. At the peak of their business, LMI served actively as one of the main defense contractors to the United States military. But with the changing political landscape, war was no longer a viable option. As the number of battles dropped, so did the funding for many of their experimental weapon systems. One such model was for a next generation transport helicopter dubbed the LM-G97.
Codenamed Project Gondola, this aircraft was designed to supersede the existing roles of the CH-47 Chinook, and CH-53 Sea Stallion. Unfortunately funding for the prototype was cut, and the project was shelved indefinitely. [NAME REDACTED], a member of LMI's design council showed me the schematics for this aircraft, which proved promising. UNITE's chairwoman, Director Alana Ares, also expressed interest in the design and requested for the immediate expediting on its development, sparing no expense for project. With the green light given, both sides from United Nations Technika Division and LMI began refining the design. On [DATE REDACTED], half a year after the Spectra's inception, the fruits of Project Gondola were seen as the first batch of three LM-G97's rolled out of the Santa Monica war factory. From there it was incorporated under UNITE's banner where it was given designation of the UNTC-12 Pegasus.
The Pegasus is a tilt-engine aerial hauler that is both a plane and helicopter while fulfilling the functions of both. The aircraft serves as the primary workhorse of UNITE's arsenal; ferrying cargo, troops and vital equipment from location to location in a timely manner. This massive beast is manned by a crew of five; a pilot, co-pilot (who also serves as the main gunner), and three engineers who operates its lifting claw and ensures that all of its systems are functioning at maximum efficiency. The aircraft boasts an impressive lifting capacity capable of hauling up to 150 tonnes of cargo thanks to its four experimental engines blocks (the designs of which would serve as the template for all other LMI aircraft). These engines are able to rotate at an axis from its wing tips, giving the Pegasus VTOL capabilities and increased stability while in the air. In this state, two smaller jet engines which span its mid to aft section provide additional maneuverability while in this mode.
The mid-section of the Pegasus houses its main feature; a crane system which is operated by the engineering team. The lifting claw which is attached to the fuselage by a series of cables can be raised and lowered from the aircraft while it is in hovering mode. The claw rig itself is modular in design, and can be retrofitted to carry a multitude of cargo and vehicle types. As mentioned earlier, its primary purpose is to transport the X-41 Spectra artillery across long distances. However with a few modifications, it can also carry up to three peacekeeper droids, and even the massive Bullfrog armored personal carrier with its six large but delicate pincers. The rear section of the aircraft houses its passenger compartment with enough seats to ferry up to ten individuals. For large numbers of troops, the Gondola has the option to carry a troop transporter pod which contains enough amenities to support an in-flight team for weeks at a time. Other notable utility pods include the firefighting pod, aircraft refueling pod, and missile racks as an optional weapons port. Once the cargo of choice is secured, the engineer will raise the entire claw until the both it and the cargo is tucked safely into the aircraft's underbelly. After that the Pegasus simply rotates its engines into a forward facing position before heading off to its destination. In flight mode, all six of aforementioned engines work in unison to give the Pegasus a top speed of up to 900 km/h.
On the subject of weaponry, its main and only weapon is a chin mounted 20mm vulcan gun. While not an overtly powerful weapon, its purpose is to clear landing zones and provide suppressing fire for retreating personnel on the ground. Additional mounts for machine guns are located on the aircraft's left and right engineering doors, and at its rear compartment, allowing for a full 360 degree arc of fire. To further aid in its survival, the aircraft is decently armored, and is equipped with both electronic countermeasures and flares. While not it's intended purpose, the Pegasus can technically serve the role of a gunship; with some commanders opting to remove its lifting claw to further increase its speed.
As with the Spectra, the Pegasus has also received numerous upgrades to its systems and avionics over the course of its service to better aid in its support role. Advancements in LMI's robotics and automation technology have made handling of the aircraft possible by inexperienced pilots. This means that the Pegasus can still effectively conduct operations even with a skeleton crew two, should the situation absolutely call for it. Today its reliability and sturdiness has ensured that the aircraft continues its service not just within UNITE, but also by the US Marines and LMI. Its success would pave the way for LMI to become the primary defense contractor of UNITE, and go on to create other machines such as the Hermes UCAV , and the Epsilon gunship.
On a final note, I should bring to your attention the fact that Arie Neu possesses what appears to be a custom modified Pegasus of her own. Reports on this variant are scare at present, but according to Agent Faithlight, its capabilities far exceed that of its stock counterpart.

Apologies for the delay on this one. Microsoft Word decided to be an ass on me and unfortunately I lost three pages of data which had to retype from scratch. Urgh.
Anyway, here's the second last vehicle for UNITE month! As you can tell, I've changed the unit's name from 'Gondola' to 'Pegasus' to better reflect its status as a powerful aircraft. Its old name now serves as a reference to it development code name. And yes, Arie does have a Pegasus of her own! Will we see it?...
...well lets just say its coming soon.
The main inspiration for this vehicle is none other than the venerable UNSC Pelican . However function-wise it took a lot of traits from the GDI Carryall .
One more vehicle to wrap up the month of May is coming soon! I think a few of you might have seen what it is.

Through all the words I could have seen in the description, my eyes landed first somewhere near "Sea Stallion" xD
For real man, I LOVE this dropship. I love the idea of the claw, how it is not really controlled by the front, but rather a separate team located in the rear. Also the intakes of this bad boy. It just looks fantastic!
So Arie has one of her own? I kinda want to see the story on how she managed to hide this thing, let alone cop on herself. If I could make a recommendation about her Pegasus, I think it should be unique like Project Whisper from the Wolfenstein series where it is customized to Aries personality or something like that. And speaking of Arie, there is just a small little spelling mistake at the bottom of the page with her name.
I am clamoring to see the Gunship man. It was pretty much L4D2 and HL2 that led to my fascination for military vehicles, though in L4D2 they are actual vehicles xD . And your work is certainly no exception. Really am looking forward to more my friend!

Haha I knew you would notice that bit! See, this is why your persona should have been a pilot! Considering how much you love gunships, this could have been your baby!!! xD
But in all thanks for commenting! Your suggestion has been noted. In fact I now have an idea of how her ship will turn out! As for how she got one, and where she hides it, I'd like to think Arie has the connections to get it done.
Also thanks for pointing out the typo as well. It made me realised that I forgot to add in the entry quote as well.

Well, I guess you are right about the persona, seeing as he will just serve as a supporting character, rather than a foil character. All honesty man, just do what you feel like with it.
Well if Arie is somehow capable of crafting the foot of a mech in a cellar, I have no reason to believe she hadn't hit at least one person up xD Though do you have any plans on how she intends to use it? And to add onto that, remember back ago I told you about that game Intrusion 2? Well the first boss of that game is quite ridiculous but a fun battle none the less. I am thinking, (but you are more than welcome to disagree) that instead of a claw, Aries' Pegasus should have giant arms like the first boss of that game. So I guess you could call it a ARMored troop transport! (ba dum chh)
Also forgot to mention about the craft itself, is the aft section of the craft supposed to hold troops? I mean they look like windows at the rear but I probably missed something in the desc.

Haha I see what you did there.
I've seen the playthrough for that boss, and it looks badass! Now I feel bad I didn't incorporate that design into her ship. Though I might just use it for another ship of her's in the future...
As for the rear of the Pegasus, yup It can technically hold troops, but its design is more suited for transporting smaller bits of cargo and vehicles. The interior of that section would be very similar to the C-5 Galaxy with collapsible seats. Not a very large infantry holding capacity by default, but thankfully there's always a troop transporter pod.

Ah so you have already started then with Arie's ship? That's pretty cool! Regardless of what it looks like I'll know for a fact it will look great, so you should probably just stick to your agenda
Also on another note about her dropship, does she still have the 20mm forward gun attached to the craft? I'm just wondering what chain of events would lead up to her using it lol.
Also since this vessel is a dropship technically revised for vehicles, is it still considered UNITE's flag ship troop transporter?

I guess it could technically count as their main troop transporter. In-universe, LMI would later develops a K-Type variant which completely removes the crane segment, and expands the rear compartment for a bigger seating area. But unlike the contemporary Pegasus, this variant was only built in limited numbers. Most of the time a regular Pegasus would just slap on a transporter pod, or even carry a Bullfrog APC if they needed to ferry large numbers of infantry.
Theres also has the Epsilon which is more suited for the gunship/troop transporter role. However due to its price tag, its almost always used only by the upper echelon of UNITE such as VIPs, and high ranking agents and Enforcers. In fact most of the higher-ups are rather adamant about letting lowly troopers ride in an Epsilon.
Oh yes, and Arie's unit has a much more heavier punch when it comes to weaponry! Put it this way, if a regular Pegasus is a transporter that can shoot, her's is a gunship that can carry.

So the Epslion has a almost of a dual purpose role then? That sounds pretty interesting! I really cannot wait to see what it looks like though. If it is possible not to really spoil anything , is there anyway you could tell me what it's supposed to look like? If not that's fine. I am still excited to see it none the less!

Just like the Hermes, the Epsilon is going to be an updated version of a design I did for a friend's web comic series waaaay back in the day.
Ignore the descriptions of that drawing as it was based on what limited knowledge I had on aircraft as a teen (certainly didn't age well).

The Epsilon used to be an interceptor? Holy man, i'd really like to see how'd you manage to turn a interceptor into a gunship!
I am guessing a few elements would look the same then, like the nose correct?

RaishaGS In reply to Ch53transportheli [2019-06-03 15:06:13 +0000 UTC]
Haha, I say 'Interceptor' in very loose terms because I based its function off the Fury-class Imperial interceptor . That ship was one of my favorites from the SWtoR back in the day, and I assumed that real life interceptors were aircraft of similar size and function. Oh how wrong I was. If anything, the Fury-class was more of a large personal transport than a interceptor. I'm starting to wonder how it even got that designation.
Unlike the Hermes, I plan not to stray too far from the old design of the Epsilon. It will generally still retain the same shape as above, just with some tweaks to bring it up to modern standards.

Haven't really touched on the old republic all that much, but I tell you what the old battlefront was the top dog back then xD
In anyway, I am really excited to see the new rendition of the Epsilon. Which in a way has prompted me to form a new idea of a scene build with the HL2 gunship. I'll give you this my friend, you can certainly inspire!
