Technology File - UNTD-01A Hermes UCAV

Written by Kiev Yarkov,
UNTD Lab 1 Chief Scientist

The end of the first year of battle against the shadow beast saw a drastic increase in pilot casualties especially when confronting those of ‘S’ threat rating and higher. Just like with UN troopers, regular air force pilots were ill-prepared to face this new menace, often making poor decisions in the heat of a fire fight as a result of succumbing to fear. However in a similar vein that led to the inception of the Enforcer program, UNITE realized that they need a kind of pilot that could make pin-point decisions fast and accurately without hesitation. For that they turned to Lauren Machina Industries (LMI) who provided the solution: autonomous fighter craft.

The concept of unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAV) is not new. From as early as the 90’s, weapons platforms like the MQ-1 Predator were at the forefront of a new kind of warfare. For the most part such vehicles were usually remote controlled, or pilot assisted; with a limited degree of autonomy. It only made sense for the next technology leap to be fully autonomous drones capable of thinking and fighting on their own accord. There was a problem however. Treaties such as the Providence Agreement, banned the widespread usage of autonomous robots in warfare. After all, if a robot accidentally targets a friendly unit, or civilians, then who is to take responsibility for it? This would be have put a dent in UNITE’s original plans if not for one small loophole. The treaty specifically states that the usage of such weapons were forbidden against humans. But since shadow beasts aren't exactly human to begin with, that technically makes them fair game. So while the bureaucratic doves within the UN Security Council continued to debate the issue, LMI began work on building a new UCAV to fill the role. It wouldn’t take long for them to develop this weapons platform as they already had a prototype in the form of the LMI-03 Artemis which was essentially a mini Hermes. All they had to do was upscale the model and pack it in with the latest weapons and aeronautics suite.

On [DATE REDACTED] the first UNTD-01A Hermes rolled out of the Santa Monica war factory where it underwent trials for the next five months. Its two cyclone drive engine allows it to reach speeds up to Mach 2.6. Because there is no human pilot, it can perform aerial maneuvers and dives that would normally be fatal. This means that much space that would normally be dedicated for a cockpit and life support systems were replaced with additional countermeasures and armor allowing the prototype to outperform and survive beyond modern fighter jets its time. The cyclone engines also have thruster points on both its base and rear, giving the Hermes VTOL capabilities. These engines are able to rotate on an axis from the main fuselage, giving the drone an additional boost in maneuverability. Its first major conflict would be during Operation: Signum Crusis, where a squadron of these drones would go up against a threat rating 'A' shadow beast, under the support of an Enforcer. Without a single unit lost during that mission, it was deemed a technological success and by the end of that year UNITE would commission more than a hundred Hermes drones.

As part of its main armaments, the Hermes sports a ventral chin-mounted turret equipped with a 25 mm chain gun, and a 7.62 machine gun. Stored in its massive fuselage are a series of 16 missiles of varying yield which are split evenly between air-to-surface and air-air- missiles. However they can be easily reconfigured to best suit their mission perimeters. While their weapons are generally ineffective against shadow beast, their persistence and nippy speed made them extremely effective at distracting shadows beasts of varying size; pulling their attention away from urban sectors. Later variants of the Hermes would include the UNTD-01BX ‘Firefly’ which was equipped with the D-24 direct energy emission gun; essentially a smaller version of the Spectra artillery's main weapon. The key feature of the Hermes is their advanced programming which allows multiple Hermes to relay information gathered to each other. This allows the drones in a swarm to seamlessly form complex tactics that can be used to outsmart their quarry. Suffice to say, if a Hermes see you, you can be sure the rest of its swarm will have as well.

As of present, UNITE has more than 400 such UCAVs in their arsenal many of which are stationed at terrestrial bases awaiting the order for combat. In the four years since their inception, the Hermes would also see battle against shadow beasts of various threat ratings.  But as of recent that scope would also expand to the more gifted members of the Neu family where the UCAV's would demonstrate varying levels of... erm... success. Individuals like Magiilily Neu were able to exploit a notable flaw in the Hermes programming and that is their inability to adapt quickly to ever changing tactics. Something which she did during Operation: Star Force . Over the past year she has become extremely adept at fighting off our drones, and more problematic individuals like Sony Neu are outright able to squash them without ever breaking a sweat.

Despite that, the Hermes is a step in the right direction when it comes to the future of warfare, with experts estimating that they will replace all manned fighter jets on the battlefield within the next five to ten years. Its success would pave the way for many more autonomous units within UNITE's arsenal.

One down! I think that description was probably the hardest thing to do of the entire art piece. This unit is basically a modern update of the Hermes drone I did many years ago, changing its role from a reconnaissance drone to an offensive one. Some of the design elements from the original can still be seen in this new version.

Speaking of design, you might have noticed that it looks veeeeeery different from the one in Magilily's report. Funny story there. When I was doing Entry 002, I had an idea at the time of what the Hermes would look like. But I had no idea what I truly wanted in its design. After I uploaded that entry, I would revisit the Hermes several more times before finally settling on the design shown above. By that point it looked nothing like the original, but I'm pretty satisfied with this new look. I'll have to redo that image again down the line, but for now just retcon it in your mind.

Main inspiration for the design is the Hunter Killer Aerial, specifically, the Terminator Salvation version (you can get a rough idea of its capabilities from that clip).

Nice revamp of the old UCAV. This raises many questions, since the original was in the Eclipse-verse
hmmmm

Kickass design though.

I like to think that maybe EON corporation exists in some way or form in this current continuity. Whether or not their function is the same as the original one is a different story. But I wouldn't be surprised if they also have a few of these guys in their arsenal!

I'm not opposed to it.
EoN is a powerful company. they would definitely have some of these UCAVs.

I got to say, this looks bad ass as hell. Kinda reminds me of the UNSC Wombat in Halo 3 ODST. Big fav over here.

Also, have you heard of any of the Intrusion games?

Thanks man! The Wombat is a pretty sweet drone design in it own right.

I've never heard of that games oddly enough. But from what I looked up, its a side scrolling shooter?

Oh yes. You should see some of the enemy designs from both the first and second game. (second game has some crazy ass bosses) As a matter of fact, one of the bosses themes (at least in my opinion) would go very well as Nicolia's theme. Here it is   www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFtV91…

But really, the games are a blast to play, both of which were made by one guy using flash out of all things. The first one is a browser game but the second is $10. Gotta say best $10 ive spent yet.

But its not really for me to decide what you should do next, all that I know is is that you make some kickass vehicles my man!

That's a pretty sick theme! I can almost imagine a fight scene with her rocking to it.

Thanks for the recommendation as well! I'll definitely have to put that on my to-play-list.

No problem man! It really fits her character. Also did you see the first boss of Intrusion 2? I mean like when they said they wanted an Armored Troop Transport vehicle, I don't think they meant give it actual arms lol.

Never the less, just do as your heart desires when it comes to more of UNITE's tech. I will be looking forwards to what comes next

Wow, the Hermes is a very effective military asset, I wouldn’t be surprised if this even becomes a reality in the future, right? Too bad that UNITE or LMI overlooked some fatal flaws in its design and programming, such as its inability to adapt quickly to ever changing tactics, which Magilily was able to exploit more than once. It almost reminds me of how the misplacement of Thermal Exhaust Ports on the Death Star was a significant flaw that the Empire overlooked, which obviously has costed them victory over the Rebellion.

Speaking of which, do you find it funny how the Star Wars franchise has a lot of plot holes and plot armor that the directors tend to overlook a lot? It’s no wonder why Star Wars has been receiving a lot of heavy criticisms recently, especially the prequels and the new movie trilogy. 🤣

So, Lauren Machina Industries is like UNITE’s biggest weapons manufacturers or suppliers, despite the fact that most people say that Lauren Family’s wealth was ill-gotten? How do you think Merida would react if she finds out her own biological parents are aiding UNITE in its mission to combat the Shadow Beast threat and to hunt down and capture her adopted family for the organization’s own uses? Do you think Merida will have face her fears and confront her biological parents at one point or another?

Lastly, knowing how skilled of a scientist Arie is, imagine if she can turn UNITE’s own weapons against them by hacking into them? I take it you plan on putting something like that into her codex entry when the time comes? X3

Haha, I guess LMI got too overconfident by its initial performance. They just didn't expect the Neu's to fight differently from shadow beasts!

Yeah there a lot of things that don't make sense in Star Wars, but generally it was never intended to be realistic. That and sometime they just have terrible directors/writers. lolz But in any case, Star Wars for me is always a win. Even at its worse there are still some moments that are pretty great eye candy and inspiration for me.

At this stage we still don't know the degree of influence the Laurens have over the globe. But judging by what B-Star is implying, they seem to be a extremely rich and powerful group.

They’re clearly underestimating the Neu’s, I guess they’ve never had experience in dealing with a magical and scientifically strange enemy like the Neu Family.

I agree, but are you familiar with Star Wars Legends, or the Expanded Universe in this case? Before Disney declared it non-canon when they bought Lucasfilm, Legends covered up a lot of things in Star Wars that we never understood or saw in the films. Contrary to the new Disney canon, Legends took on a dark tone for Star Wars and the fans preferred the latter over the former since it made a lot more sense than how Disney is writing their new movies. It’s too bad we won’t get to explore more of the Expanded Universe anymore, but if you like, these books will tell you a lot of what you would like to know about Star Wars Legends and I think you’ll find them to be very captivating for your mind since I know that science fiction has always been your forte:

I would be very surprised if what B-Star is implying is true about the Laurens being an extremely rich and powerful group as a matter of fact, as for how powerful they are, well I hope we get to explore that one day. Do you think Merida will have to face her fears and confront her biological parents at one point or another, though? If that time comes, let’s just hope she doesn’t have to do it alone, right? It doesn’t matter if Merida is adopted, if you ask me, the Neu’s are her “real family,” you can tell they have loved and cared for her ever since and will never stop doing so.

Oddly enough, the only Star Wars novels I have read are the Republic Commandos series. I'll probably have to find some time to look at the others. But its good to know that Disney is taking some references and inspiration from Legends. Stuff like the TIE Defender and the Interdictor-class are finally canon! If they ever do an Old Republic movie, I will be so happy.

Haha maybe the Laurens are at NGO superpower tier. Merida's story thread is one of the more interesting ones in the AU. I'm not sure if she still holds any animosity with her parents after all these years. Only time will tell.

I remember playing Star Wars: Republic Commando, that game was da bomb! I hope Disney also makes the Tie Hunter canon. If you ask me, we need an Old Republic movie now.

Yep, I am seriously looking forward to seeing more of Merida and learn a lot more about her background in the future.
