Description

The Celestial Body Habitability Index was created to give necessary context and warning at a glance.

Its purpose was to make it easy for travelers to quickly determine which environment their spacecraft would arrive at, and what preparations would be necessary for landing or docking.
In practice however, it was almost instantly obsolete the moment it was introduced.
Since all spacecraft essentially fly themselves and are equipped with countless safety measures to avoid the breaking of contamination rules, the index is mostly only useful for administrative and filing purposes.
As a result, the average citizen will most likely not even notice the symbols next to their destinations on their star chart.

No ship will allow you to navigate to an uncharted star system, nor will you be able to simply land on any planet. Interstellar ships aren’t even equipped with landing functionality and the shuttles that get you to said ships and back only go as far as low orbit.
Preventing any bad actors from simply breaking contamination rules.

Once a new starsystem is discovered, each body will be individually classified by multiple independent authorities and assigned a type. Once the entire system has all its bodies assigned, it becomes a charted system.
Discovering a new starsystem however is less like exploring the frontier in a spaceship, and more like coming through countless data points on a spreadsheet.
New starsystems aren't discovered by going there, but by sifting through telescope data in the hopes of finding something interesting. Because of the sheer amount of stars, only noteworthy systems will be charted. And the discovery of those lies in the hands of a few determined individuals who are willing to do the boring task of comparing spreadsheets.
This “boring” work used to be a hobby of mine. And thanks to my resilience in the face of boredom, I discovered the very planet me and my team are now studying.
The Type H living Planet I named Eurytos.
