Yep. Sadly, I wonder if anyone can actually save any of the rhinos at all. Many places in Asia and the middle east believe that these horns are aphrodisiacs (something you drink / eat that promotes sexual desire) or are viewed as an important ingredient in old Chinese medicines (for essentially everything--what people in the West would call "snake oil," meaning it has little to no medicinal value but is sold as a cure-all potion). Now it's even seen as just a status symbol in some places. As long as these countries are willing to buy horns for such wasteful purposes, poachers will continue to hunt them and sell them for a profit, and so the creature is as good as extinct. It's the same thing with tiger bones. Very sad, but there's little anyone can do about it until those countries want to change it, and they don't.

Rhinos, elephants, hippos, giraffes, etc. Wont go extinct, the amount of effort people are putting into preserving these animals are crazy. Guards armed with machineguns, jeeps and dogs keep these animals safe from poachers, and it’s actually working. The rhino for example haven’t seen a fatality from poaching in over a year iirc, and the species are totaly capable of surving if only 1 or 2 rhinos are killed over a span of 3-4 years. And afterall, we will always have them in zoos.

iamSketchH In reply to Toarcian [2018-03-31 21:07:13 +0000 UTC]

Sadly, that's not quite true. LOTS of animals have been hunted out of existence--and many that now look bizarre and foreign to us existed here not too long ago. Zoos are not an adequate way to save a species (just look at how difficult it is to produce Pandas in breeding centers). Most wild animals don't produce well in captivity--especially zoos--and when they do, it's not in as great of numbers as in nature. Not enough room, plus there are concerns (even in zoos) about damaging the gene pools from too much interbreeding because of the limited number of animals (since the animals aren't usually taken from nature anymore, so most zoo animals are related to one another within a country). Sometimes zoos even euthanize surplus animals, to include baby giraffes (France, Denmark)--even while giraffes are on the endangered species lists. Plus, things like zoos and reserves only work when someone has the money to put into them--and things like international and national economy or governmental powerstruggles can change that. (Heck, when ISIS overtook areas in the middle east, they were going into zoos and killed the animals for sport or left them to starve). Zoos and reserves may come and go throughout history,Β but that doesn't mean that the individual establishments and the animals within them stay the same.

As for the rhino--it's quickly disappearing. The West African Black Rhino just went extinct in 2011 from being poached because of it's horn. The Vietnamese rhino went extinct in 2009 for the same reason. The North African white rhino is on death's doorstep as they believe one of the last males (a very old 45 year old) is very sick. Edit: The Northern white rhino just went extinct.

Today, 1-3 Southern White Rhinos are killed a day in South Africa for their horns (not 1-3 a year)--that's 365 to 1095 a year (5% of their overall population). That may not sound like much, but you also have to remember that rhinos are not like most animals. They don't mature young and have a litter of babies every year. Unlike with many animals, it takes a rhino years to become grown and sexually mature. Females usually reach maturity at about 6 years, and males at 10-12 years of age. On top of that, they only give birth every 2-3 years, and they carry their babies for about 15-16 months (over a year). It's a long process, and the death rate is catching up to them fast.

LOTS of animals have been hunted into extinction, even in the past 150 years or so. When one supply of rhino horns is gone, the poachers move directly to the next one. Rhinos, unfortunately, are on their way out because the only way to stop the poachers (who are even willing to put their lives on the line to hunt these rhinos) is to prevent the buyers in Asia and the Middle East--and I just don't see how we can do that. Their countries and their people would have to want it for themselves. You can't force it on them. It's already illegal.

So like I said, it's sad--but there's almost nothing we can do about it.

Why are people writing the white rhino species as a whole as extinct? Sure, Sudan has died and i'm as sad as everyone else but it's only the northern subspecies that's doomed. The southern subspecies however has around 21,000 or so individuals living in the wild as of 2015 making the white rhino actually the most numerous species of rhinoceros living today.

The Northern White is distinct from its southern relatives just as the Quagga is distinct from other zebras.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zebG In reply to RAPHTOR [2018-03-29 13:16:53 +0000 UTC]

I get where you're coming from but i've seen a lot of people and the newspaper flat out state white rhinos are extinct which is far from the truth. The northern white belongs to Ceratotherium simum cottoni and the southern white to C. simum simum and since the southern white is way more numerous than the northern one the genus Ceratotherium is very alive. It's like saying the plains zebra (Equus quagga) species as a whole is extinct just because the quagga (Equus quagga quagga) is gone without considering the other subspecies that are alive and well like the Burchell's (E. q. burchelli), Chapman's (E. q. chapmani) and the most plentiful of all the Grant's (E q. boehmi).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RAPHTOR In reply to zebG [2018-03-29 13:51:15 +0000 UTC]

Then bad writing perhaps. But I'm pretty sure most people know it's just the northern white that's gone. And even then it's unreasonable to feel carefree just because the other one is numerous, they're still vulnerable for exploitation.

zebG In reply to RAPHTOR [2018-03-29 13:58:43 +0000 UTC]
