Florida Panthers are almost certainly not "extinct" despite what many have said I live Florida and my father still owns property where they no longer breed supposedly been wiped out. Not only have I personally found numerous footprints but among those who live near and have visited my fathers property, there is no doubt at least one lives in the area. They are just so elusive that it's nearly impossible to find them. From my experience and knowledge I would say there has been a sudden rebound albeit a small one. There is almost certainly more than 300 today and probably surprisingly so. According to Florida fish and game, the Florida panther is considered endangered. Sorry if I seem frustrated but I wanted to give the perspective of someone who lives near the Florida panther and has had personal experiences with at least one.

And so the northern white rhino joins man`s megafauna casualty list, I see the Javan rhino following close by. Both are functionally extinct at this point.Β

Yeah, that's what functionally extinct means, the species is still alive but beyond saving.Β

So sad...
All because of the cruelty of men...
How many animal species will still be on the other side before men stop their free killings ?

Well, probably it will end when humanity eradicate itself, joining this collection on the picture. It is in my oppinion the best explanation to Fermi paradox. Why there are no alien civilizations around? Because all sentient beings at some point of their history develop weapons so powerfull, they destroy themselves.

You know, 99% of all species that have ever lived are extinct.

I know that.
I really like animals and I'm still sad about what's happening to them.
Humans should protect them rather than kill them for useless things (like horns for example)

To be honest, some animals need to be regulary killed. Wild boars for example reproduce so fast, that their population grows thrice every year. If they would be left alone, there quickly would be not enough food for them all. Many would be underfeed and mortality during winters would be extremely high. Of course wild predators such as wolves should watch over their population density, but there is not enough wolves to do it efficently.
Other species such as rhinos, elephants, whales or tigers (most of big species) reproduce very slowly, and so they should be protected. But well, people have "priorities".
Case of european bisons show perfectly well how these "priorities" work. Before First World War bisons were protected species, but during war, when Prussian army ran out of food supply, they simply hunted all bizons from BiaΕowieΕΌa forest. Only 12 fit for breeding them were left alive in zoos. Species was saved, but all bisons are very closely related and they have health and immunity problems caused by inbreed. Now there is about 1800 of european bisons in forests of Poland, and it is about the limit how much fits there. Some would need to be culled soon if other countries would not adopt some of them into their forests, but well, there is no demand for them. Bison is kind of animal, which looks good, when is far away. They are troublesome, as herd of bisons can very quickly completely devastate freshly planted young forest, so they are quite costly animal to have around.
Other example of such priorities is case of Bruno the bear, which in 2006 was first bear in Germany since 170 years. It was real curiosity, that such species previosly extinct in country returned. Until it began to hunt farm animals, so it was killed. Well it turns out that it is nice to have rare species around and protect them, but only if they eat grass and are nice and fluffy, because if they are not, they should be made extinct again.
And it is worth to remind a case of rhino hunted for its horn year ago in Paris zoo. Bisons were saved from extinction because some of them were lived captive in zoos. But if such animals are not safe from poachers even in zoo, well, that means there is no hope for them. I think in next thousand years there certianly would be no alive rhinoceros on Earth.

Then you have no excuse to be that naive. The world isn't as black and white as you want it to be.

SkulblakaSaphira commented on the picture. And the picture shows the quagga, the dodo and the tasmanian wolf (among others), which as a matter of fact became instinct through human interference. SkulblakaSaphira isn't being naive, just stating a fact. So stop being soΒ presumptuous and do your research.Β
