Even the older Jedi Starfighters had an Astromech Droid on them.  The TIE fighters didn't have any either.

A grand design and painting.  Has anyone else noticed that the X-wings and Y-wings have a need for an Astromech Droid for help in quickly updating navigation, while both the newer A-wings (and variants) along withe B-wings do not appear to have an Astromech Droid anywhere on the fighters?!

Hey, I just read (I believe that I read this in the "Rebel Starfighter Owner's Workshop Manual") that the designers of the A-Wing discovered that leaving out the astromech droid allowed them to make the A-Wing a bit faster.  Since maximizing the speed of the A-Wing was a major design objective, they decided to proceed with this direction.  As a result, the A-Wing could only hold the data necessary for 2 hyperspace jumps.  If they had included an astromech, the ship would've been a bit slower, but it would have (thanks to the astromech) been able to store more hyperspace jumps.  So, I guess the designers made a trade off, sacrificing hyper-jumps for speed.

That is interesting.  It makes sense the way you stated.  What is more important... Speed in attack  and in getting away fast OR the ability to 'get home', no matter how many jumps it takes.  In REBELS we saw that the Ghost used Chopper (Hera's own older astromech) sometimes to calculate jumps and even maneuvers.  It would be an interesting question if a mech could make the flights and navigations easier for other ships like The Millennium Falcon and maybe Han (Lando too) just didn't want an astromech for whatever reason.  In the original trilogy R2-D2 did so many things yet did they respect him?  Uh, NO!  Even in Episode III (ROTS) R2-D2 did things for Anakin and Ob-Wan that if he wasn't there they would not have survived at least half the time.  Did anyone respect or appreciate R2?  Uh, again, NO!  Only Padme showed him appreciation when R2-D2 saved the royal cruiser from enemy fire and then had her handmaiden (the real Queen) clean him up.  All that stated, I would rather have a Y-Wing instead of an X-Wing and either one of them before an A-Wing.  I like the A-Wings but that lack of jump data makes me rethink that.  I never liked the B-Wings at all.  I believe the Y-Wings are more functional as primarily a bomber but can handle some fighting and the Y-Wings are faster on attack runs BUT are very poor in agility and quick maneuvers, especially when compared to an X-Wing which is at least as fast and has way more agility as strictly a starfighter.  The Y-Wings CAN have a need for two, a pilot and a separate gunner, depending on the model and the configuration.  At the time of the Battle of Yavin, it appeared the Rebels used whatever old ships they could get a hold of and so it was a makeshift fleet as far as fighters and bombers were concerned.  If you were a Rebel pilot, you probably were assigned whatever ship they could give you and you might not like what you ended up flying.  Luke got lucky with an X-Wing.  I would still prefer the Y-Wing just to be a bit different.  Especially those newer SUPER-Y-WING Fighter/Bombers as they upped the specs and those newer Super-Y-Wings could still move fast but they upped the ship's agility and gave them larger forward cannons for better chances in a real dogfight.

I'm glad to hear that you like the new and improved Super-Y-Wings.  They are undoubtedly the best!
Actually, I'm working on building the Y-Wing from Episode 9 right now.  They are pretty cool too!

Those are great questions about the astromech droids, but I'm not sure that there are any really good answers.

I come up with weird questions sometimes.
