Description I've always loved the Hawk design.  It was so much more exciting and aggressive than the Eagle.  I always thought it would be awesome for the Alpha Moonbase crew to find a secret hidden  underground hangar that was chalked full of Hawks!  That would have helped the story along quite a bit.  (If anybody is looking for story ideas for a Alpha Moonbase movie, let me know, because I have some good ideas.)

Where is the hatch on a Hawk?   It's clearly visible on the Eagles.   Just wondering.  Since Hawks are fighters it my just be little thing hidden from view...

That's a great question!  There is a lot about the Mark IX Hawks that was never really explained, (at least so far as I know.)  Like, where is the landing gear?  Is it retracted?  If so, where does it retract to?  And what does it look like when it is extended?  Because the Hawk was featured in just one episode, I guess they never bothered to work out all of those details.  But it sure made quite a lasting impression in that one appearance, didn't it?

As far as the hatch, there is a white/gray raised panel just above the pilot (and another one just above the co-pilot) that might be some kind of dorsal entrance or escape hatch.  Maybe pilots drop into the cockpit through these hatches through gravity-fed chutes like they did in U.F.O.  There are also raised panels just below the pilot and co-pilot positions, that might be ventral hatches.  While many people think that the long body of the Hawk is not habitable, I've always suspected that it probably is.  I imagine that there is at least a narrow corridor leading all the way from the front to the back of the ship (if for no other reason than for emergency maintenance access on various systems.)  There might also be some cramped bunks back there for long missions.  There might also be additional weapons, gear, etc. stored back there.  If there is a long narrow corridor through the middle of the hull, then perhaps there is a hatch somewhere along the belly or side of the ship that unfolds with stairs or a ladder up into this corridor, then leading up to the cockpit.

I'm not sure if we'll ever get definitive answers on any of this.  I just keep my fingers crossed that the Hawk is prominently featured in any 2099 movies.  In the mean time, it might be fun to explore some of these possibilities with CAD models.  I'd love to try adding F-18-style tail fins and landing gear to the Hawk to see how they look.

It is possible there are bomber and fighter variants.

Ooo!  What a great idea!  Of course there would be fighter and bomber variations, and maybe recon variants too.  After all, it is the "Mark IX" variant, so there are at least 8 other versions of this awesome ship.  And for that matter, there might even be a Mark X, XI, and XII versions out there as well!  So whipping up some cool variants might be a great little assignment to take up and explore.

The Hawk is a cool design and it would have been fun to have seen it in more than one episode.

You've got that right!  I always wanted them to discover a secret underground bay filled with a dozen or so Hawks.  That might have breathed some extra mystery and excitement into the show.

I agree with you the Hawk was so good I wished all of them looked like that when I watched the show.

Yeah, the Hawks also brought a little color into the show.  So many ships were just plain white, it was fun to see the bright orange Hawks.  I'd have loved to see each squadron painted in a different signature color.

Yeah, think of the possibilities!  Those might be fun possibilities to explore a bit further.
