This is probably my favorite image of Jolly to date. It just expresses such a rarely shown emotional side; usually being the voice of reason and control.
Anyway! I'm excited to say that I'm writing up a nice history for Jolly that not only describes his origins, but also brings to light the decent into darkness of the Zebesian military as experienced by him.

Mannn I LOVE this design, the detailing to the face, particularly that mouth, is incredible! I love the detail to the muscle in the feet too. I like his name - and the fact that despite his monstrous appearance, he's usually a more stoic and reasonable type!

Thanks, Robo! =u=
Jolly is my heart in monstrous form - I just love him to pieces. I'm just now FINALLY getting to colouring this image though; I can't believe it took me so long to tackle it.
I'm glad you like his design! He is generally the much calmer, fatherly, figure; so I figure maybe somebody tried to hurt his son or something. Or it's just because I love drawing big open mouths with lots of teeth. >u>

That's awesome, I hope to see your color version in the near future! Sweet characters with more monstrous designs will always be a soft spot for me, lol!

Oh wow, he's brilliant. I love the detailing on his feeties. You're incredibly talented. I agree, he would look really cool with a background! Keep up the great work ;3

Thank you so much!
Jolly is very special to me. He was the first zebesian I made and he's like a son to me. Haha, that's maybe kind of lame, but I love him a lot. He's older and slower than the younger zebesians, but damned if he doesn't have more heart than them all.
Oh gosh, I just love his feet, haha. Monster feet are one of my favorite parts to draw. Feet, hands, mouths, arms, and necks. Just love em'.
I still feel very much that I need to colour this image, as well finish images for the rest of the characters I've designed for this story that I can never seen to sit down and write.
Well, maybe some day.

No, that makes sense- forming a sort of loyalty to a character is refreashing. I am a die hard gears of war fan, I had beign playign for years- so when Dom died in the last installment of the game, I actually cried. Tears were flowing from my eyes- hahahah I loved him! Well you're great at it :33 Oh no, writers block? or no time to do it! yeah, one day :33

It's true, you know?
Since I was a kid, growing up in the 80's, I had a strong connection to Transformers, which was one of - if not my absolute - favorite series. Ratchet was always my favorite. When I watched him get gunned down in the 87' film, I was so devastated. I didn't even finish watching the film the first time after that. I don't think I finished watching it until a few months later. It just killed me to see him die - I didn't ever expect that he could. :C
To this day, he is still my favorite and he was such an inspiration to me growing up. It's to him, and a close brush with death, that I decided I wanted to be a Paramedic; and that's what I'm doing today, and I love it. C :
As for the story, it's a little of both of those things. Add in a dash of 'lack of proper effort' and that's that. X D

aww that's adorable. I understand what you mean fully. I have never stayed very long at one school- whenever i would come home from a day of meeting new people i always had crash bandicoot waiting for me you know? He, and Spyro were always there. They were my best friends for years and years. I would stay up as late as I could, being about 8 years old, i could only manage like 11pm. heheh but still- every moment with them I chereished. And even today, whenever anything at school or home is getting too much, i just curl up and play them for hours and hours on my playstation one.
wow man, a paramedic- that's fascinating. Good job, pal! Aww naaw, you could do it!

I absolutely love space pirates. I have for years. They are the single most recurrent theme in nearly all of my artwork and I have learned so much from drawing them.

Thank you much!
My image of them has evolved greatly over the years, but I still try to hang on to the roots of their designs from Super Metroid, both the final concepts and the unused concepts [in which the pirates were bulkier, with some sporting fingered hands]. Zebesians are definatly a corner stone in my art though. : )
I did in fact apply for work as a conceptual artist with Retro Studios once upon time when they were still an unknown, young, developer. I'd heard from a friend who often does freelance work for developers that some no-name group was gonna take on a Metroid game. I immediatly scoped them out and submitted an application. After reviewing my portfolio, they very politely rejected me, saying that they'd already hired on several artists and simply did not have the funds to take on more. I was fine with that. What I was not fine with was seeing some the concept work for Metroid Prime 2 that looked suspiciously like some of the work I submitted to them in my portfolio. : \ Without any copywrite protections however, I was up a creek, so to speak.
So, all that aside, I have not attempted to apply to any other developers since; especially Retro - who, quite franky, I believe should have stopped after Metroid Prime. Where Prime was such an amazing game, the one's that followed were just riding it's coatails; total cookie cutters with less than interesting characters, and too many neon colours. : (

Yes, I agree, the other two Prime games are very good, but lack that classic Metroid feel.
I ant to blast giant bugs in some weird bubbly green shit.
Wow.
I feel honored to be typing to you! I am a HUGE metroid fan. I've always wanted to be a concept artist, it is my biggest dream, but I'm so bad at proportions and realistic drawings that nothing is ever done.

Metroid has been pretty much a constant in my life since my brothers and I got it for our NES on the Christmas of 1987. Really though, it was when Super Metroid came out...wow; I was just totally immersed. The whole universe of Metroid was so remarkably interesting to me. Also in my very early years, I read a book [which became one of my favorite] called "Settlers In Space", by Steven Caldwell. The book introduced me even further to the human struggle for survival in a futuristic, space-frontier, setting. The two series almost synch up in several places too, mostly reguarding terminology, which amazes me. Two of my favorite things, working in tandem. The Metroid universe that I've put together over the years [and dream to make a comic of some day] is a correlation of those universe meshing and inspiring me.
The characters I've brought to life throughout have become something close to children to me. X D A little rediculous, ya, but they just feel so important to me. A direct product made from two of the more influencial aspects of my upbringing. Goodness...I could go on forever probably, haha.

That isn't ridiculous at all! I make drawings, most of which I haven't even begun to upload yet, to express different parts of me. I want to be way too many things at once, I'm only seventeen, near eighteen, and I want to be a musician, playwright, artist, author, movie maker, father, and inventor. I don't have the academics to become most of those, but I'll never run low on hope and inspiration, but I'm such a perfectionist that I rarely finish a picture.
Off topic, where do you live?
