Description Well, here it is; my first actual digital colour. Not horrible for my first attempt, I suppose.

I havn't got Photoshop, so I used some rickshaw, no-name, programme called "ArcSoft Photo Studio", which came with my scanner. It's primarily used for removing red-eye in photos and adding cheap little stamp effects to pictures, I think. After some time toying with it, I discovered that it can do a bit more. Now, I don't know anything much (at all) about digital colouring, so I don't know what' layers' are that people always talk about, but that's ok because I'm not sure ArcSoft knows what they are either. We're perfect for each other.

To be honest, it really reminded me of colouring in MS Paint, with a few more advanced effects. Glowies! : D

Yes, I follow the idea of long tongues for the pirates. Whenever I draw them, these days, I generally give them a tongue of 2-3 feet on average.
All of those statistics written there are no longer really valid for the character. As he's evolved over the years, I've made some heavy revisions to all of his features, in fact.
As for the height average; he's actually somewhat taller than what is written there, but he is by no means "above-average" - he's actually the most average of all the Zebesian characters I have. The Zebesians I draw do not follow the specifications of any of the newer generation types; I actually really dislike all the new designs. I stick to a mix of the classic designs used in the conceptional work of Super Metroid and the final versions that made it into the game. I've also added a lot of my own design into them over the years.

hehe X 3 I love Black and Orange together. Especially when the Black is real thick, and the Orange is real vibrant. Something about that combination just really works for me.
Thank you for the lovely comment ! : 3

I guess the first shot is varied but I sure do know that your digital colouring is amazing, now. I should only hope to perhaps be as good as you some day. : 3
Take Care !

He looks bitchin!! You did a wonderful job for your first digital coloring! The twinklies from the lights really add a nice glow on his skin :3 I never would have pictured him as a black and orange guy, but he certainly pulls it off well! You must color the other ones, I want to see what sort of color schemes you have on them

X D d-aww ! Danke, Mirkah !
It took a long time though. o.o My hand kinda hurt from holding the mouse so long afterward ; but I think it was maybe worth it. : 3 I'd like to colour the others too as soon as I can get myself to sit down and colour for another 9 - infinity hours.

lol ! I feel yer' pain. The Phazon Mines were a trip to freakin' hell and back. o.o And on Hard Mode, Reaserch Lab Hydra in Phendrana is totally in no way a walk in the park. Specially' when the lights go out.

Anyways, thanks ! I appreciate it. : D

*hug* Danke, MD ! That light there is actually one of the details that I worked at most. *nod* I wanted to make sure, that even though it was a moderatly minor detail, that it wasn't treated like one and skimmed over. : 3 So I'm really glad that somebody caught it and such. As for his colours, I always really loved the way that vibrant colours stand against really dark shades. : 3

I'll keep practicing with this programme until I get Photoshop : 3 Maybe then it'll all be easier for me to understand when the time comes.

I'm just about to take the plunge and purchase PaintShop pro. Is that the program you used? I hope it was, because I'm not sure what its capabilities are. That, plus PaintShop Pro is the only program that isn't around 500 smakeroonies.

ooo ! I'm kinda late on this response [ sorry about that, btw ! ], so have you gotten in by this time ? Or still considering it ? Either way, with the skills and techniques that you've got, which you can apply to it, I'm sure you're gonna lay out some fantastic work !

The programme I used is this really, archaic almost, type programme called " ArcSoft Photo Studio ". It's primarily used for red-eye removal in photographs and lets you add cheap little stamp effects to "jazz" up the images. I just played around with it a while, and while messing with the pencil tool that it's got, I realized that it's basically just an mildly advanced MS Paint. Anyways, it came with my scanner programme, so I don't know if it's available anywhere; not that I'd suggest spending any money on it, it's nothing spectacular, believe me.

But, man...500 big ones ?? Holy hell, that's serious cash ! How much is PaintShop Pro out there for ? Maybe I should possibly consider getting it too. : 3

Anyways, sorry it took me so long to get back to ya', MD. Been really busy tearing apart and remodeling this house. I gotta go drop by your page and see what awesome new work you got posted up ! Take Care !

MilwaukeeDriver In reply to ravenshield [2004-08-31 05:50:09 +0000 UTC]

No problemo on the response. I've been really mulling over several programs, primarily the huge drop-in-the-hat Adobe (which actually IS 500 bones), but Paintshop Pro as well, which I think is fairly comparable, and it's only about $100. After I'm sure it can do basically what I need, I'm going for the Paintshop.

It IS nice to know that a lot can get done on generic programs like that Arc Soft prog you mentioned.

I'm going to try to go really deep into coloring my next piece --it would be nice to joined the "colored" of DA. But jeeze, there seem to be a lot of people that WIP OUT the colored work. People are MACHINES -- I don't know how they do it so quickly.

Well, good luck with the house -- use LOTS OF SPACKLE, and WEAR YOUR SPACKLING-HAT.

ravenshield In reply to Servial [2004-08-15 23:27:46 +0000 UTC]

He's actually my own character. The base idea of him was spurred off of the Space Pirates from the Metroid games, but I've been stylizing the species to my own ideas over a period of 4-5 years. He still belongs in that game's universe though. Jolly is my first original character from the series, but I've got several others too. : 3
