'reeling' is what they say
or is it just my way?

How, exactly, I ended up picking this back up again, oh.. four months later?.. is kind of a funny story, actually!

I still can't decide about the hair, it TAKES OVER.. hence the bizarre, blue-speckled fading out mix. The anatomy of the chest makes no sense and I really need to work more on the key.

I did fix the eye, but I'm still not convinced that it's actually better than the first, messy, b&w version.

Man, I'm not convinced of much of anything at 10-minutes-to-four-in-the-morning, honestly.

Fun edit, to add the WAYBACK MACHINE:

it's so simple but awesome at the same time. I really love the hair and those eyebrows don't ask me why! didn't even look at the weird chest until I read the description tbh.. I don't think it does any harm to this beautiful piece of art though

Dragon Heir! Congrats, BTW, on DH getting picked up by the distributor! Any chance that they also work on this side of the ocean? I will sure enough annoy my local bookshops into picking up Dragon Heir. And, oh, twist my arm, you savage - tell me that I could paint / sculpt your handsome, handsome men, and that there'd be money involved?! What is this world coming to?! It's rough being an artist. Okay, ignore me, I'm being goofy tonight. Feel free to email me! I am almost finished with a painting commission, I have time. Because it's you, I'd torment myself drawing all that long hair.. ehehe...

I've had your comment in mind, well.. since you made it!.. and as it happens, I dragged the piece out to finish it and made the hair substantially darker. Not black, but Much much darker. If you would like to take a look, it's here: [link]

Thanks SO much for the feedback - it helps a Lot!

Okay, now this is the kind of comment I love; I sat here going, 'Dude.. he really does seem as if he's pondering something, doesn't he?.. Cool!!' I stare at them so long that I half forget that it was a cool idea before I got mad at them during the drawing and coloring bits; it's really really cool to be reminded of what excited me about the idea. That might not make any sense.. ^.^;.. anyhow.. thanks SO much!!

It makes perfect sense! I think every project goes through a few phases: 1. I love it! It's gonna be so coool! 2. I hate it. It's ugly! and 3. Yes, success! Beautiful again. Maybe you were just going through phase 2...

Why do you think I draw MEN, and not women with large, curvaceous breasts and small pert noses? I hate my nose.

ANYWAY. Thank you so much! I won't patronize you with a reminder that true beauty comes from within; it takes age and cynicism before anyone believes that shit.

LancelotPrice In reply to razimo [2010-06-04 21:16:13 +0000 UTC]

I am already old and cynical and gone past cynical about some things, turning to idealism of a realistic sort. While inner beauty and outer beauty are different from each other in character, they are both very true.

If I could draw, I would draw beautiful men, too. One of my favourite subjects.

He's gorgeous and I love red hair too I like all your other versions too. The key is a nice touch and I love the little braids in his hair. I discovered your work from ceruleanvii's feature. I'm a new fan

Ohhh I had such fun drawing this dude that I drew him again! :3 Thanks so much for the kind comment! This piece was Such an experiment for me, seeing how far I could shove myself out of my comfort zone, and to my utter shock I got something Good out of it! Thanks for coming over - ceruleanvii is so, SO nice! I thought I was seeing things when she featured me!

Cracking through old comments today (I swear, I am an embarrassment sometimes) ... thank you so much! This poor painting. I need to finish it! I had such utter fun with it that I've already drawn the character once more, and he'll probably show up again.

Those lips. Mmmmm.... I like it better than the previous. It's more interesting and instead of just his hair catching the eye, the key is noticed as well as his eyes (also gorgemous) and his kissable (Smooch!!) mouth!

He looks goooood with longer hair. No taking a dagger to it.

i'll be honest, i like the hair, he reminds me of...a cardinal (don't you dare laugh) very vibrant and BAM attention grabbing. and those smoldering eyes, wonderful!

and i want that key (collects keys)
also, i need to send you a picture of that peice of yours that i framed....

razimo In reply to katymoon05 [2010-03-26 07:42:31 +0000 UTC]

I love cardinals! I think I have about 1,200 of them that gobble all the seed in my bird feeders! XD And like I said.. I think I said? .. I set myself a challenge, to take this crazywild hair color and make it look believable. Cardinals are red, and look real; surely I can make red hair that looks real!

.. ahah.. I tell myself that anyway!

The KEY, now, you can get the key, it's from, *graps after memory*.. from a Swiss safe deposit-box, from like.. the turn of the century?? LMK if you'd like to see my reference photo - it's a COOL key!

And yes, I would love to see a picture of the framed art! Would love, love love!

i would LOVE to see the ref photo, and i'll have to nab my other half's cam to snap a pic or two for you.

i think you've done a great job of it. it's lovely, but then again- i've had hair that color a couple of times, so my oppinion might be a bit biased.

Here is the key:

[link]

The whole website has these lovely framed lock-and-key combinations. I just loved how stately the key was.. it's very simple, yet sorta complex.

And thank you! I am still working on getting the hair to behave, and making the anatomy of the chest make more sense, but in general it's gotten very good feedback from people and I'm really totally thrilled.

AND I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE MY HAIR THAT COLOR!! Heee! My hair is dark, though, boo.

I think I have too! Eff that, I know I have. It was.. December?.. when I posted the other, the 2nd WIP, and when I opened it again, I was like, 'Oh.. bam-bam-bam, I need to do this this and this to fix the eye..' .. not easy, but it jumped right out at me, and before I was just sad and puzzled.

Anyway. I babble! Thanks so much!

ZOMG I THOUGHT I WAS BACK IN PAINTING IV. Brushable? Goodly? All these BIG ART WORDS. I quivered, I tell you, I quivered, thinking you were about to compliment my daVinci like use of chiaroscuro, at which point I would have sobbed with joy.

.. and yeah, I guess I have to admit that the last time I knew a Roman nose IRL, I was like 'omg dude damn if I wasn't happily committed, I'd FLIRT WITH YOUR NOSE.' I love the straight profile. :3

You should work in a gallery!! I mean, if I had a gallery, I'd be offering you a job right now. I WOULD.

I keep saying that about Painter! XD And every time I try, man, it makes me SO MAD.

SO. Use what you like, and crack a whip at it until it behaves like you want. *G* My big breakthrough with Photoshop was a really nice set of custom brushes that a VERY talented artist had created and very kindly shared!

If you do decide to try Photoshop and need some help, just let me know and I'll do what I can.

I think this is beautiful... his face is so handsome. The eye looks very good, definitely an improvement.
The only advice I could offer for the hair is perhaps tone the colour down to a more natural red, as the current colour is too bright and artificial.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

razimo In reply to refined-serafina [2010-03-24 18:59:33 +0000 UTC]

I fought (and will probably continue to fight with) the hair for hours. *taps fingers* I actually like the piece best if I remove the color from the hair entirely, so that it's just the lineart tracing over the background. Thing is, this character's hair truly is supposed to be ink-red. One challenge I set myself with this piece was to tone and shade his hair such that the red looked 'natural' - there are solid-red birds, after all; I should be able to give a person red hair that can be made to look like a color that's real.

.... aaaaand it's not going well, so far. You're right; the hair really is overpowering. Grawr.

ANYWAY - thank you for the kind remarks, and extra thank you for the critique on the hair (I do just need to get rid of the red, dangit all..!! ;D )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

refined-serafina In reply to razimo [2010-03-25 21:33:14 +0000 UTC]

Aaah, I wasn't aware that the hair was supposed to be that colour; I should have known better. I see so many people giving their characters unnatural colours in their hair simply because they don't know how to colour. You're clearly not one of those. Haha I guess your only solution is to study robins for hours...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

razimo In reply to refined-serafina [2010-03-25 22:10:25 +0000 UTC]

Oh, pft, I mean, how would you know that his hair is supposed to be that color? Like I said.. *I* thought it was too loud, I wondered if it was ruining the picture for anyone else, and your comment confirmed my guess! I should just change the color of dude's hair, but I've set it to myself as a challenge. ^.^;

I do have some native reference material! I live in Tennessee, and we have cardinals - they're really really RED birds!

[link]

... not quite as red as dude's nonsense hair, but still.. very red.

I am definitely still learning how to colour at this point! Hair in particular is my biggest gremlin, honestly. ^.^;;;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

refined-serafina In reply to razimo [2010-03-28 11:02:16 +0000 UTC]

Cardinals sure are hella red. I guess the trick is getting the correct range of tones in the red. It's so subtle :S
I reckon you can get the hair right Just stick at it. The painting's already great, it can only get better
