Description
I have returned to work on my Bug multipurpose spacecraft. Most of the surface details have been added to the hull, but I still need to add spotlights, cameras, and other sensors - then I can start the real work - the cockpit interior. I've been considering modeling an aeroshell for the underside to allow the Bug to enter the atmosphere of low gravity Mars like worlds. Even the thin atmosphere of Mars is probably too much for the unstreamlined Bug to attempt reentry from orbit, but a disposable aeroshell could get the craft down and be detached at low velocity and low altitude prior to landing.Modeled with SketchUp. Rendered with Kerkythea.

I dunno, the Eagle was fairly realistic looking even if the plots it was used in were lacking. I'd venture that it was a more comfortable craft to fly though. Visibility in the Eagle cockpit was awful.

Really like that design, something sort of Space 1999 about it

Oh absolutely! It's probably half and half between Eagle homage and Function Dictates Form.

very nice update on the Moonbus concept from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I look forward to seeing the completed project.

What about an inflatable, reusable aeroshell, like the one NASA just developed?
Loving that aerospike nozzle, by the way.

I'd have to look into it to see how it worked. In most cases, since the Bug wasn't really meant for worlds with surface gravities of more than a quarter G, they don't tend to have atmospheres of any significance anyway.

Yeah, that's pretty apparent from the shape of it, not to mention that it probably doesn't have enough power to reach escape velocity on a planet with an atmosphere anyway.
