Description UPDATE: Since =anikakinka and =gazdowna made me remember about TRIA's problems with their caps and the ink getting dried, I decided to update my tutorial about it. It seems that the first batch was defective because the caps do not close correcty. If you have your Tria markers completely dried out, try to take off the nibs from one side and pour some alcohol (thanks KnP for your advice)

I finally finished the first part of my marker tutorial I promised you a very long time ago. I'm really sorry for making you wait but I had some serious problems with covering all the most important things. I'm aware I din't not explain everything but I will try to tell you more in the second part where I will concentrate on coloring with markers.

I'm not gonna describe Prismacolors or Touch markers because I didn't use them myself. Also, I can't give the proper addresses of places where I bought my markers since some of them I got via Ebay and other in some art shops in Poland (mainly in Warsaw). As far as I know, you can buy them on Internet.

Credits:
=gazdowna for some photos used in this guide
Also, some photos are made by me, others are taken from brochures and official marker sites (since I couldn't take good quality photos with my bad camera).

Simply fantastic information. You hardly even see tutorials like this one that actually advise the artist on the product. Thank you so much.

I started off with tria but found out they dried out super easily! Even with the cap on as tightly as possible at all times they dried out in under 3 months of light usage and even some were dried out the day i got them! Have you ever encountered this with them?

Nope, it's the first time I hear something about this O_o. Maybe it depends on papersheets? I dunno. I have all my 1-year-old drawings and the colors are still intensive. Of coure I use different brand at the same time (copics, Tria and promarkers) but still they work fine.

Ah~ Some kindly person just told me the reason for tria's drying out without even using them was because they had a faulty cap system in the past! This was about 2 years ago now so that would explain it~ Since then though they said the problem has been fixed.

O tych skuwkach to mi Anika przypomniala wczoraj, dobra, dopisze bo to jednak wazne z praktycznego punktu widzenia.

gazdowna In reply to MadameLillyBlack [2010-10-15 08:53:31 +0000 UTC]

It's the faulty design of the caps. They fixed it in later edition, but sure it's as hell annoying. I contacted the producer (I still had my receipt on me, though) and they replaced them.
But ohter than that I'd try to revive them with pure ethanol- take off the nibs from one side and pour some liquid inside- it's usually only the alcohol, what evaporate, not the dies. The colour may not be as vibrant as before, but that also works ok for me.

ah! This was a while ago now so i no longer have them but it's a good piece of advise for an alcohol based marker user anyways! Thank you~

Good material ideas. Thanks. I never even knew that the Copic Ciao markers existed! Wow!
About the Canson paper, though, did you know Canson makes a marker paper that is quite thin but doesn't bleed or soak up the ink at all? It's really good for pencil drawings, too because it's easy to erase on, you can get a good line flow going, and it's easy to draw fine details on. Also, it's pretty cheap, so it might be worth looking into if you hadn't seen it before.
Oh, and do they have Copic Multiliners in Poland? Because those are the answer to the smudged lineart problem you get when you mix Microns or most other technical pens with alcohol-based markers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

gazdowna In reply to ajil [2010-10-15 17:16:09 +0000 UTC]

ajil In reply to gazdowna [2010-10-16 20:39:06 +0000 UTC]

gazdowna In reply to ajil [2010-10-16 20:51:00 +0000 UTC]

ajil In reply to gazdowna [2010-10-16 20:57:42 +0000 UTC]

gazdowna In reply to ajil [2010-10-16 21:00:44 +0000 UTC]

Chiming in as a Touch marker user: to me, they're a step below Copics in terms of color and blending. They're a bit of a bridge between Prismas and Copics, in both delivery and price. Sadly, the one local art store that sold them has since closed down around here, forcing me to buy them online which can up their price considerably thanks to shipping. BUT I do consider them my favorite marker to use after using Prismas for years.

I think I've been using my marker paper incorrectly now that I realize the waxy side is the back. >.>
