Description One of my eight tortoises.
When we moved from California to Oregon I had to re-home my tortoise tribe.
Jessica was the second oldest, at around 80 years old.

I love love LOVE her! ;u; I hate that you had to re-home Jessica- she's a beauty! In your place I'd have a lot of trouble parting with my pet turtle. He's a little yellow bellied slider I found on the sidewalk in front of my house.

It was very hard to part with my tortoises; many of them I had raised from eggs, and I had some of them for over 25 years! They went to loving homes, so they are doing fine. I feel good about it.It is amazing how attached you can get to these guys.

She wasn't extremely large. Maybe a foot long? I had others that were much larger.

Wow, you really do have quite the menagerie there! Do you need permits for all these pets or are they considered "farm" animals? Tortoises would be pretty cool to have. The one pet that will outlive its owner!

I had permits and licenses for all the tortoises. Almost everything else was either "livestock" or something the California law ignored. California has dysfunctional animal laws. You are theoretically supposed to have a permit for EVERYTHING that isn't a domestic animal... even common pets like snakes, iguanas, turtles, parrots etc. Nobody ever does, and it is not enforced at all.

But you couldn't take them all with you to Omaha? Actually, I have to imagine that the tortoises wouldn't appreciate the colder climate.

We moved to Oregon and you aren't allowed to bring them here! It is a good thing I checked what pets are is legal here, it turned out that almost none of my 20+ turtles were legal! I was only allowed to bring my box turtles.

That's sad. I hope it's because they were concerned about people not taking proper care of them rather than for safety reasons or such. Tortoises and turtles aren't overly dangerous creatures so I can't see why they'd be outlawed. Hope you found a good sanctuary or other caretaker for them.

The desert tortoises aren't allowed to be taken out of California. I'm not sure why, but I think it is because they need the hot, dry climate.
You agree to that rule when you apply for the permits. The other turtles, such as the "sliders" aren't allowed in Oregon because they can become an invasive species and push out the native turtles.
They all went to good homes. Turtles and tortoises are easy to find homes for. Everybody loves them.

Great to hear! I wonder how good their memories are. Like, if you visited them, would they recognize you?
Er, sorry about the never-ending questions. I've never actually talked to anyone who owned them before. Little painters, but that's about it.

I don't know if they recognize individual people, but they sure know that people feed them. They would all come trucking over when I went out to see them. They were fed veggies from a dish, so they learned that people mean food. They never seem to learn that toes aren't food though.

Oo, that could be bad. Some of those guys have pretty strong jaws, don't they? Don't think my toes would appreciate being nibbled on.

I never realized tortoises have such amazing textures on them! They really show up here.

She looks like the little old lady who spends her days on the front porch, making sure the neighborhood kids stay away from her rosebushes. XD How old was your oldest?

My oldest was "Rosie", who, if the estimation was right, was over 100 when I re-homed her. We took our tortoises to the local tortoise expert vet. He used the accepted formula to date tortoises, which is kinda like telling the age of a horse from its teeth. I doubt that this method is totally accurate, but by using this method Rosie was dated as being around 80 when we got her. She was huge. We had her 22 years, and she was still going strong when we re-homed her.
