I WISH my June bugs were this pretty! I'd be taking photos of them through a stereo microscope......or trying to...

I can't find the pic of the sitatunga skull you posted.Could you give me a link?
We have a nice stereo microscope too! I've never tried taking pics with it... is that difficult?

I'm sorry, I think I should have mentioned it was on my stock image site. There are two views of it up. The lower teeth are crazy.

As for photographing through a stereo microscope, what we did is use the lathe to make a plastic adapter that allows T to hold the camera right up to the eyepiece. So I guess it depends on the microscope and the camera you're using as to how difficult it might be. We do get pretty good results though....

that would be so cool! I like ur magic paint that shines rainbows in direct light. The moon dragon u made that looks silvery with rainbows just made my jaw drop. I loved it. Unfortunately I'm on my phone and can't fave anything in my folders. When I get on a comp, I will fave a ton!

I always loved these things as a kid. They were like tiny flying jewels to me.

Mean!! these things destroy your garden. I remember back in the day i would go out with a tennis racket and have some fun.

The green ones just eat overripe fruit. I have never noticed June bugs destroying anything... that's the peacock's job.

?? I really don't feel like having a debate about this. But just so you know, female june bugs lay eggs underground (and specifically in gardens with more enticing roots) and those eggs turn into grubs which feed on roots of fruit and vegetable plants. So eliminating june bugs is a good thing. Although they do look nice.

Oh I didn't know that! I had only found the grubs in compost piles.

Yeah, it looks pretty gruesome, but I did find this insect already dead, THEN I pinned him.
Yike, and I accidentally pinned through a leg to, that is bad form.

My sister found one of these crawling beneath her bed one morning. In the MIDWEST. She screamed and woke me up, and I nabbed it for my own collection. Their coloring is superb, and you did a great job of capturing that iridescent effect in this photo.

I don't think collecting and putting needles through already dead bugs is bad. But tying strings to living ones so they can't fly...
