Technique #5 would work really well if you just stuck your entire hand in some paint and started flicking it at the paper or canvas like crazy as well.

also.. since I'm new to the whole watercolor concept.. how do you keep the paper from buckling?
π: 0 β©: 1
retromortis In reply to ERES13 [2010-09-04 03:17:32 +0000 UTC]
i've only ever had problems with buckling if the paper is super oversaturated with water. most of my techniques are relatively dry, save for the splatter effects so that might be why.

Sooo... I know it's two years later, but how about doing this in Photoshop? ;D I have plenty of experience blotting and splattering with neat shellac inks... unfortunately, replicating this in Photoshart is a pain in the butt.

retromortis In reply to parad9gm [2010-06-03 08:37:51 +0000 UTC]
i don't do digital artwork, unfortunately, so doing a tutorial on it would be moot since i have no expertise.

My mistake... I'm considering scanning some ink splatters and just using them as masks anyway. Thanks for the reply.

Nice tut. the skill here really shows in your work. I've done a bit of splatter work myself, though I don't have any posted yet, but I've also had some interesting results from blowing concentrated watercolor across the paper. One of my better results; [link]
I tend not to use much of a technique or plan in my work though.
Anyway, keep up the great work! Thanks

Have you ever tried using a toothbrush? It works for some XD
π: 0 β©: 1
retromortis In reply to XFadedToBlackX [2010-01-01 06:37:52 +0000 UTC]
i don't personally like it because you can get the same effect with the flat brush for speckling. Plus, then you don't have a toothbrush in your brush roll. :F

This leaves my greatest wonder about your work being whether or not you use masking fluid.
I always get more paint on the subject than the background because my aim is bad (or my brushes suck, or some combination of the 2), and I was wondering how your splatters seem to fall inside the lines just so.

retromortis In reply to AshHavynn [2009-10-16 18:33:33 +0000 UTC]
i don't use masking fluid. i just cover things with other pieces of paper and my hands. :]

AshHavynn In reply to retromortis [2009-10-16 18:53:16 +0000 UTC]
My god you are lucky to not have screwed a picture up like that. I just cannot get away with that.
π: 0 β©: 1
retromortis In reply to AshHavynn [2009-10-17 04:03:01 +0000 UTC]
oh, i've screwed up tons. it's just that since i've screwed up tons, i've learned how to fix it. xD
i just don't like masking fluid cause it tends to peel my paper. ]; i can correct watercolour going everywhere-- i can't correct my paper dying. ];

AshHavynn In reply to retromortis [2009-10-17 04:34:50 +0000 UTC]
I've come to the realization that if you are unhappy with a painting, the solution is without a doubt to add more paint until you are satisfied.
Unfortunately I'm not good at splattering restrictively, so my solution and murdering every part of a picture with it XD

I've been doing it all wrong!!! Thanks for posting this tutorial, I really like to splatter, so this really helped. I would always dry off the paint, because I thought I would tear the paper, now i realize I was washing the color away... Thanks Again!!!

Thanks so much ^^ I was about to use splatter techniques in a painting and it probably would have taken me forever to figure out the diffrent types of look I could get out of it on my own. So yah~! Thanks~! ^^

This is extremely helpful, because I see a lot of splatter techniques from artists I like and wonder how they do it! Thank you!
I also wanted to compliment you on your eye for design. The tutorial is very well done, good design most definitely! The font mixture works well together and the simplistic white background with black font and then the watercolor colors worked out wonderfully and makes everything very clear.
