In the Hake section, you mentioned "lift" does that mean drying the water with papertowels or what exactly?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

retromortis In reply to MirkAssassin [2009-03-28 06:43:36 +0000 UTC]

yep, that refers to dabbing up some of the excess with a paper towel.

hey! would it be possible if I use these splatters to make brushes on photoshop and use them for our school yearbook which is currently being created?

Very helpful, thank you. 8D
And I have a question.
What brand of paint do you use? Is any one better than the other?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

retromortis In reply to think-purple [2009-01-08 23:21:19 +0000 UTC]

any brand of watercolour will work fine. some are better than others, but you have to find what you like. i'm actually in the process of switching brands, but when i settle on one, i'll post it on a future piece.

wow thanks a lot.
i've always loved your peices and i have always wondered how to get the effects you get.
and don't get to caught up with realism(i read the comment response in one of your more recent peices). i love your style and it looks like of others do too. you don't have to change unless you really want to.

YAY!!!! here i was asking on the artworks i had seen how you did that killer splatter technique and HERE IS THE ANSWER!!! >///< so happy!!! so it HAS to be soft brushes (i mean the brushe's hair -so to speak- has to be souple?)
and for a moment, i thought you were using ecoline (the red) but i was wrong...does it give the same effect with ecoline?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

retromortis In reply to kuroaloeart [2008-05-14 08:30:06 +0000 UTC]

yes, soft hair brushes work best. >w< and what is ecoline? D:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

kuroaloeart In reply to retromortis [2008-05-14 09:16:01 +0000 UTC]

oh its the french word...erm, well its transparent color ink, so like watercolor but ink...ok...ill go wiki on this one
"L'Γ©coline est une fourniture artistique. Elle se prΓ©sente sous la forme d'un flacon contenant un liquide qui est de la peinture aquarelle liquide (connu aussi sous le nom d'encre aquarelle)"
so yeah...basically ink watercolor.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

retromortis In reply to kuroaloeart [2008-05-14 17:04:20 +0000 UTC]

yes, it will work but i'd be careful-- i do some of my stuff with ink (mostly acrylic ink) and I've dabbled in the liquid watercolour before and they're both too highly saturated to be able to get in there and correct if you mess up. Just make sure you dilute it some and you'll be fine. xD

This is awesome! I'll go start experimenting. Do you use wet on dry, wet on wet, dry on wet or dry on dry? All of them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

retromortis In reply to Perfect-Indifference [2008-02-24 22:14:30 +0000 UTC]

for splatterwork, your brush is wet, your paper is dry. you can get cool effects with wet on wet, but there's no possibility of achieving a splatter with a dry brush.

this is a really great tutorial and I seriously appreciate the thought and effort you put into making it. I really like the generalized nature of it and especially the tips at the bottom. I would certainly appreciate any other watercolor or general artsy tips you might be able to provide. I'm thinking about starting off in watercolor, but I'm a little unsure as to the materials needed to get started.

Ah, and I had something else to ask...you said you used Bristol board. Does that naturally not buckle when drying, or is there some method you use to keep it drying flat?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

retromortis In reply to typospaz [2008-01-28 04:09:52 +0000 UTC]

i usually press it, but if you paint on the back with egg white and water first, it'll curl that way, so it'll end up flat when you paint on the front. :3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Lizzasaurus In reply to retromortis [2008-02-28 10:20:50 +0000 UTC]

what does egg white do to the paper?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

retromortis In reply to Lizzasaurus [2009-05-23 01:33:43 +0000 UTC]

i actually just found your comment for some reason! >>;; so sorry for the late reply, but i believe that painting with eggwhites on the back of the paper, i BELIEVE the eggwhites work as a sort of medium that will give the paper more hold in the opposite direction so you can load more water on the front and prevent the page from curling from the abuse. I'm not 100% on this or the science of it, but i believe that's the purpose of it.
