Merlin was one of the many superheroines active in The City. The people of The City didn't known much about her background. For what everyone can see, she can fly as fast and as versatile as helicopter, while also able to hovering in the sky. She can lift and throw some quite heavy objects. Bullets can stagger her but they wouldn't wound her. And her purple eyes can see and notice movements from several city blocks away like a hawk watching her preys. She's also cladded in black suit, sporting a purple hair, and also armed with multi-purpose gun that can shoot tranquilizer, electrical shock, or grappling hook.

She also rarely appear during the day, except on Saturday and Sunday, so people can only guess that she had a daily job in her civilian life. But if she was, who is actually behind the mask of Merlin? Who wouldn't notice a woman with purple hair and purple eyes with super strength in a day job??

Actually, the enhanced strength, ability to fly, and enhanced sight, are coming from her suit and mask. The purple hair was dyed and the purple eyes were from contact lenses. Without any of them, Merlin was actually just a a normal woman who worked as one of the uniformed officers in The City's Police Department, Officer Melissa Asteria.

Melissa was born 28 years ago in quite a rich family with a loving parents. Her father, who back then was one of the most successful businessman in The City, was also known as a kind philanthropist who funded quite a lot of things to promote The City's welfare. Her mother, a smart and successful engineer, founded a non-profit organization to help the homeless, while working "side-job" designing and building infrastructures to help The City's less fortunate. Growing up with the love of such noble parents, Melissa became an idealistic and kind woman with strong sense of justice.

For most part of her childhood and teenage life, there's not much interesting things that happen in her life. However, life turned quite dark for her when she was graduating high school. Her father was accused to embezzling money from a government contract and bribing officials, crimes that was actually committed by his business partner but got blamed on him. As a result, half of her family's wealth was seized, and her father was thrown to jail for corruption charges.

On top of that, her mother's non-profit organization was suspected to do money laundering, and got investigated. This made it lost the trust of all donators and even the people it was supposed to help, even after the investigation concluded that her mother's non-profit organization had nothing to do with the embezzled government money. The organization crumbled as it lost all financial support, and Melissa and her mother had to changed their last name to her mother's maiden name, Asteria.

And like a final nail to the coffin, Melissa's father was found hanging himself in his cell just two months after his sentences. Some foul play was suspected due to the circumstances, where the CCTV inside the prison was malfunction and some bruises was found on her father's body, but nothing came out of it.

As a result of these injustice, Melissa's mother changed from a sweet and loving mother, into a brooding, raging, alcoholic woman. Melissa quit college to take care of her mother, but her mother continue to spend what money was left on booze. This continued for a few years, until Melissa had enough of her mother alcoholic tantrums, and left her home in tears, leaving her mother.

Now that Melissa had to live alone, with no more financial support and degree, she had to work a few retail job before finally decided to join the police force. Because she entered the police academy quite late for her age, and also because her family history, she raised ranks very slowly, and after a few years, at 28 years old, Melissa was only just recently assigned to be a uniformed patrol officer in The City.

And then, after all those years leaving her mother, she was suddenly called by a hospital: her mother was recently admitted for heart complication, and didn't have much time. Melissa visited her dying mother, but without any expectation of reunion due to how she left her years before.

Turns out, Melissa's mother had changed again during those years when Melissa left her. Melissa's departure had made her rethink her life. She abandoned the alcohols, and with the money their family had left, setup a trust fund for her daughter Melissa to live comfortably. However, that's not the only thing Melissa's mother would left her with. Melissa's mother, having a new perspective of life, using her engineering skills to built an armaments of techs, equipment, and supersuits that can enhance the wearer's physique, to fight the rising crimes in The City. She had intended to don the mask herself, but the time was not on her side, and so she left them all to Melissa, for her to do what is right and more importantly, to ask for her daughter's forgiveness.

Melissa's mother passed away in peace, knowing that her daughter had always forgive her for all those dark years, and that she would don the mask in her honor.

With her daily necessity basically taken care of with the funds she inherited from her parents, Melissa can actually quit the police force. However, she was staying, because working as a police officer would help her gain inside knowledge of what's happening around The City, and would give her credibility and justification as a patrol officer, any time she needs to scout around a suspected scene of crime during the day. And when the night comes, she would don the suit and hit street to protect the people of The City, donning a mask and using her original family's last name as her symbol and codename: Merlin.

And that's how Melissa, as Merlin, show up in The City.

Honestly, I already planned for Merlin's day job to be a police officer long time ago, but I haven't really develop it much However, I also wanted to give her Batman-esque background, and so I came up with this mix-matches of stuff I also had made her looks as uniformed officer only recently... But now that I've made it, why not releasing it to public

She's not a new character anyway... but I think now I'm going to give her more appearance in her police uniform too!
