Such a beauty.
I only just got a baby one of these giant lovelies yesterday for my birthday. So I've been doing research so I don't kill her.
Great picture too. I would have been frightened of being bitten.

My gods, thats beautiful!!! Huge, too... How the hell did you luck out in getting on that wouldnt attack on sight of fingers, is what I want to know. Ive had soooo much trouble with meeting aggressive ones.

Congrats on finding such a lovely girl!

Okay, I'm going to be the idiot here and make a really, REALLY stupid observation. Uhm. I may be counting wrong (Florida public education system and all that), but...doesn't it have like...10 legs?

I thought arachnids that used legs as arms still had eight limbs, and just ran on six while using the front two as arms (like the Sun Scorpion, Camel Spider, whatever you wanna call that thing that's neither scorpion nor spider).

There are no stupid questions, my friend, only stupid people that ask questions... No, I'm kidding, but let me briefly explain...

Arachnids, unlike insects, all consist of eight legs, however, the leg-like limbs between the chelicerae (the base of the fangs) and first pair of legs is called the PEDIPALPS, which are believe to have served as legs millions of years ago. These pedipalps are not legs, however, but rather used to aid in grasping and pinning down prey. They also aid in a males' mating ritual, to hold back the female in copulation to avoid becoming a meal. I hope I was clear enough.

Well I feel more smarterers now. At least I know that I wasn't counting wrong - I mean, I used all my fingers and toes and still kept coming up with 10.

Thanks a lot for the info, though - I guess I've either never really gotten close enough to notice that, or perhaps I've just never seen a species of spider that has those extra 'limbs' that was big enough for me to notice.

There's really only two large kinds of spiders here - the huge (4-8 inches leg-to-leg) critters we call wood spiders (they're mostly black with red and yellow stripes and grey skulls on their back, with a hard exoskeleton and no fuzzies), and the big brown fuzzy (not hairy, but fuzzy or velvety) oak spiders that get about 4 inches leg-to-leg and run far faster than anything should be allowed to run. I'm almost positive the wood spiders don't have those - I've seen tons of them up close since they like to build webs across trails and chill in the center of them. As far asthe oak spiders, they're too fast to get to see anything. Just....zoom!

Every other spider we see around here is just 'spider,' since they're generally too small (less than an inch) to really get to see any details other than color. So basically Florida has three kinds of spiders - wood spider, oak spider, and 'those little bastards that get into everything."

Oh, and those tiny little translucent grey scorpions that appear in your house to scare the hell out of you and never seem to make sense. ie "How the hell did that thing get in my coffee mug?!" "I've never even SEEN a scorpion...what's this one doing on my toothbrush?"

revxus In reply to TheDeathBunnie [2005-09-02 06:56:15 +0000 UTC]

Well, they all have them - if you ever catch one, place it in a small jar for observation. You'll notice them, they may not be as large but they'll be there!

TheDeathBunnie In reply to revxus [2005-09-02 06:58:17 +0000 UTC]

Well the wood spiders I can stare at them for a few hours in their natural habitat - they're the most laid-back spiders ever. They just chill in their web until you walk into it face-first.

However, if you just stand there and dont' disturb them, they'll sit there forever. I'm gonna have to take a second look at them next time I see one. I can't believe I never noticed them before!

TheDeathBunnie In reply to revxus [2005-09-02 08:23:45 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure that they just hide in waiting until a traveler comes along looking aloof, then they construct a giant web across the traveler's path in a few seconds that corresponds amazingly to the exact same face-height of said traveller.

So basically, if I walk long enough one will appear to scare the wee out of me.

I've seen these in like National Geographic and stuff but I didn't know you could get these as pets...it's beautiful! I know nothing about their temprament or if they're venemous, but I think what would have given a subject like this a lot more impact (as far as size goes) would have been to let a child hold it in two hands. Like a shot with the spider facing the camera and a child holding it out in both hands towards the camera. That would be a truly, truly amazing shot...of course, only if this critter is safe for children to hold!

Whee! Hey, by the way...what do you feed those? Birds are generally expensive to purchase, right?
I'm assuming you feed them mice and such, the same as you would a snake?
That's the one reason I could never, ever have a snake or spider like that. I had one once, long ago - little rat snake I found in the yard. I bought a lil' rat to feed it...but it was too cute and I couldn't do it. So I let the snake go and kept the rat.

revxus In reply to TheDeathBunnie [2005-09-01 08:29:46 +0000 UTC]

*LOL* That happens to many people, reptiles are not for the "weak at heart." If your heart is stronger to those "furry" little cutie-pies, then a reptile is NOT for you.

And yes, birds can be expensive, and they are almost always available as frozen feeders. I no longer have this giant spider, but, I fed it hopper-sized to adult-sized mice, it would it pin it down to the ground and envenomize it until it was unable to move and turned it into an goo-like substance, no longer an object. And to answer your previous question, you can get these at [link]

TheDeathBunnie In reply to revxus [2005-09-01 08:48:10 +0000 UTC]

See, but the spiders are furry too...so then it would be a toss up between the two.
Only generally speaking you can't really cuddle a spider - I'd imagine they'd get pretty scared if you tried.

I stuck with my iguana - it was violent enough watching what it did to bananas and lettuce. I loved that lil' guy. Until I went to Washington for three months...and my mother who was watching him at the time gave him to a friend at work. She really hated that thing. That friend gave him to a friend, who gave him to a cousin who didn't feed him and left the heat lamp on at all times. Iguana-jerky....

I got him when he was just six inches long...he was 3 feet when she gave him away. Had him for about two years. Grr.

revxus In reply to smashingpumpkins86 [2005-08-23 22:27:41 +0000 UTC]

You're probably better off! Red knees are much colorful and better at handling, that is if you're comfortable handling a tarantula. Most "normal" people aren't.
