Description In celebration of my conquering of the Essay, let's submit this little thing I drew.

Since I've been playing Subnautica in between doing college stuff and drawing sketches, I decided to draw something in tribute to that. It's the Reaper Leviathan, looking up at a tasty morsel. Smallest of the Leviathans, it's still dangerous.

*internal thoughts while being eaten*
If there are any regrets I have among the countless terrible deeds and things I've done, it's that I didn't make a Sea Moth...

Oh that.
It's the symbol of the Imperium. Back when I was printing script for my costume, I failed a couple times, but saved the paper for occasions like this.

Is Subnautica any real fun. All the gameplay I've seen makes it look depressingly quiet. ._.

I personally have fun with it, because it's my type of game.

Subnautica is a survival craft game with a story to it. This means that you will be spending the majority of it harvesting resources and crafting items, vehicles and working on your base. However, to make it interesting, the blueprints to crafting things is NOT handed to you on a silver platter. You start off with some basic things, and then you have to scour the seas and the ship you came in in order to find blueprints and pieces to make more advanced items and vehicles.
Take for example the Cyclops. In order to be able to construct it, you have to find fragments of it and scan them. You have to find three fragments of a hull, engine and bridge, and only then can you build one.
And then you have to find the data chips and blue prints to craft enhancements to your technology like a burning knife, faster fins, depth enhancements for the ships, etc.

I've been playing for some time, and I will say I've been enjoying it, but in order for you to keep enjoying it, you CANNOT make a permanent base in one area and call it quits. Because I'm still working on my starter base and now I'm going "Well, I wanna finish it, but I feel like I've spent too much time here." So now I'm thinking about moving to a new area and making a base, which shouldn't be difficult considering I turned the Cyclops into a mobile base.
The key to enjoying the game is to keep exploring and keep moving. Because now I'm thinking about setting a base on the edge of the plains, which will give me access to early game stuff and put me closer to mid game resources.
There is a story to this game, and you can pursue it, but only through exploration. Fortunately that's not difficult.

The real crown jewel of this game though, is the eye candy. This game is BEAUTIFUL!!! And it's so well optimized that your computer doesn't need to be a super computer to handle it. I have a DECENT computer, and I only get minimal lag from time to time. But seriously, this game is so beautiful and has the coolest creatures.

My only beef with the game, is that the developer is putting politics into it. The game was made during a mass shooting, so the dev made a lore explanation that humans abandoned all guns and weaponry... which is absolute bull shit. I'm not saying you can't put politics into a game or that I need weapons to have fun, but human beings would NEVER do such a thing, so it makes no sense to me.
And I feel it really ruins my immersion, because in my mind, I'm a lone survivor on an alien world. I would find WAYS to make weapons to defend myself, and kill other creatures other than this survival knife you get. And plus, the reason that human beings are top of the food chain is because we're intelligent enough to make superior devices and weapons to outmatch the natives of a world. I feel that the game should at LEAST have an assortment of tools that can act as emergency weapons, like in how Dead Space, most of Issac Clarke's weapons are just mining tools like the plasma cutter, force gun and Fusion Core Cannon. Hell, at least give me a spear or harpoon gun since I'm in the fething water!

Another thing I don't like is that your character has the highest metabolism rate of all time. I know this comes natural with survival games, but I can't tell you how many times the story missions are ruined because my character is starving to death even though I ate ten fish two minutes ago.

All in all, I'd give the game a solid 9/10 for being an early access games.
It's beautiful, well optimized, has an immense amount of creativity and originality, super cool environments and animals, a great incentive to explore and a lot of things to do, and a cool story. It has the short comings of your character needing to eat and drink every five minutes, and the political views interfering with the lore and gameplay. And of course, this is a game for those who love survival games, because if you just tried to go gun ho for the story, you wouldn't last long.

Apparently, I just recently discovered this.
You can actually... ACTUALLY tame the Reapers by feeding them a certain fish.
Meaning you literally have to bait them into trying to eat you, then shove your hand into their mouth and give them the fish... and then they stop being hostile to you.

Yeah, it's so big that it's killing animation is that it will grab you with all four mandibles, open its maw and stuff you inside.

And it's the SMALLEST of the four Leviathan species.

Rexlare In reply to Tydra759 [2017-12-10 08:58:10 +0000 UTC]

I am not.
The second largest is the Sea Dragon Leviathan, which EATS the Reapers
The Third is the Sea Emperor Leviathan. Non-hostile and crucial to the story
The fourth is the Ghost Leviathan. You find the offspring in the main areas, but go into the void and find the adults, the largest and most terrifying of them all.

The Sea Dragon is my favorite, because two reasons.
1. It's roars and such don't sound like aggressive monsters, it actually sounds like it's sad and in pain.
2. There's actually a skeleton of a sea dragon leviathan in the lost river... and it's bigger than the living ones.

And now, after doing some research, I have discovered something important.
The best sea base location REALLY IS on the only island formation that doesn't have a precursor base on it.

Rexlare In reply to Tydra759 [2017-12-11 07:28:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... what a surprise.
The only Island in the entire game is actually the best location for a base to be set up since it's the center point of all the most valuable biomes.

Rexlare In reply to Tydra759 [2017-12-11 07:51:25 +0000 UTC]

I was referring to the game itself.
It would have been better if the Island was beneficial since you don't have to worry about depth pressure or oxygen, and it comes with plants that provide infinite food, but it's centered in a rather unuseful biome zone.
OR the island is in a useful biome zone, but is swarmed with dangerous predators on land and sea.
