Description
Boss #1- Iudex GundyrAs I said before, I am going to start drawing the bosses of Dark Souls 3, not advancing through the game until the subsequent boss is defeated. So naturally, I haven't gotten too far because this is the introductory boss, Iudex Gundyr, in his final stage against my Inquisitor Atlas-starting out in the Assassin class because I need the spook spell.
Gundyr is the best intro boss throughout the Darkborne series as a whole. He's tough for first time players, but not too difficult that you'll break the remote. I even managed to parry him a few times. His biggest trait is his transformation into phase 2. I was a veteran souls player, and when I saw that spooky transformation I was all likeΒ
"WHAT IN THE GRIM REAPERS EYELESS SOCKETS IS THAT?!!!"
Personally, I like this fight, and I enjoyed drawing him greatly. It's not 100% accurate, but I feel I did a good job, especially with the puss of man part, and adding some texture to his armor and my characters clothes.
Tell me what you think down below.Β
Oh and if you want some lore down on this guy, feel free to ask.

This new piece of yours is wonderful!
First off i would like to commend you for the great use of detail to essentially
most surfaces possible. The details of the armor, the axe, the odd demon head snake thing at the top, are all nice. The folds of the clothing are alright too, but i would suggest a small amount more shading in the folds. However yes this is very impressive and i love the use of what seems to be marker. I have not seen this much before and not done this well before. Overall the piece is a big improvement since the last piece i have seen from you. Make sure to keep improving because i would love to see what you can do!

Thank you for the little history lesson, and also thank you for caring enough to view my critique.
I will admit i myself am not a professional, but i feel i can at least make an attempt to help others improve. I really like the potential you appear to have,
I will be happily awaiting more pieces from you!
:]

Thank you very much for the critique. I was hoping to get a detailed critique for this piece, and I'm very happy to have received such a generous and well thought out review of my most recent art.
Yes, this is all done with Prisma Color Markers, and while I'm not the best at it, I feel I'm getting there.
I agree though that I need to keep working with clothe folds and details. I should have definitely added some more shading for those pieces, so I'll keep that in mind for the Champ Gundyr.
Thank you for the critique, it made me smile a little more today.
P.S. His weapon is a Halberd. It's basically a spear with a long axe head meant for sweeping and charging attacks. Though his weapon is a very fantasized version of the historic weapon, they're pretty efficient weapons, especially against spears and armor.
Just a bit of historic weapons education.

I wouldn't know if Majestic is the perfect word for poor ol Gundyr, but that'll be the right word for the beautiful dancer for sure.
Thank you.

Man, I love me someΒ Gundyr. First it's all like, alright, big guy.. lots of reach, pretty tough then it's like BLAM! Squiggly Venomesque demon mode with brand spanking new attacks all up in yo grizzle! What a brilliant into to test your mettle to see if you are even READY for the bullshit BS3 smashes in your face.
Some pretty good shizzlor here man, this is going to be an interesting project to watch.Β

I honestly think Gundyr is the best intro boss within the entire franchise because of how he's designed, and the shock factor he brings. He and Gascoigne are the greatest intro bosses in not just souls, but in any game I've played.
I'm glad, though don't worry, not every page will have a white background. I've decided that I wont spend time in background details, but I can at least add a color that's appropriate to the boss arena.

Good point, I've not had the pleasure of playing Bloodborne for more than half hour, but I've seen it played back and forth. Gascoigne is as you said another fine example of "This is the baby test, dont die, scrub" I mean, back in the Souls days I would have said Asylum was the best to get you nice and ready for the inhumane brutality that will be visited upon you, but it i without a doubt a shadow in light of those two. Best intro bosses ever by far.
Background suck, I hate em man. Then even a touch of color or some super vague details will be better than nothing. S'all good homie.

To me, Vanguard of Demon Souls was too tough for players, Asylum demon was too easy after the plunge attack, and Dark Souls 2's first boss is just all over the place.
Gascoigne and Gundyr were the first examples of having an actual challenge in boss fights, where they can be a great difficult spike or a cake walk depending on the players.

TheFunkyBoy In reply to Rexlare [2017-05-03 10:14:28 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Vanguard was tough, but that feeling when he toppled over and you're sat there exhausted then burst out "OH! HAH! YES!" That feeling though! Then you get all those sweet items and meet Mr Dragon God and learn the true meaning of Souls: You gunna die son. However, since Demons was the first of a series and in my experience the first time I and probably most ever people played a game of that kin, it's no real surprise it was hard as nails dipped in titanium, encased in a Dreadnought.
True, very true. They had a nice solid medium, strong enough to punish you for sucking or not learning but still have that ray of hope that with a touch of determination and patience you will win. Eventually. Good times!

Damn dreadnoughts... call in the Leman Russ tank.
I agree. Still, I feel they both had too small of HP pools. Just like the poor pointy hats.

Holy socks that guy looks tough. Something tells me even Dark Souls' introductory bosses are a decent challenge, as opposed to mere warmups.

Rexlare In reply to Thirteen4one [2017-04-24 15:57:41 +0000 UTC]
... meh.
Demon Souls - the vanguard hits way too hard for introductory.
Dark Souls - Asylum Demon is deceptively easy if you follow the technique of "Comin' for that booty"
Dark Souls 2 - Doesn't really have an intro boss, just three bosses that you can fight first. "Old Dragonslayer" is the best of the three, but for a veteran DS player, he's nothing.
Bloodborne - Cleric beast is stupid easy, but he's optional so you could argue Father Gascoigne for intro boss. And yeah, he's awesome.
Dark Souls 3 - Iudex Gundyr is the best for first time players since he's tough but not impossible in the least.

First off, we call it
Pyromancy flame
Fire Stream
Chaos Vestiges
and Pestilent mercury.
Only one of those you can have in the beginning of the game when you fight this boss. That being the pyromancy flame (catalyst for using pyromancy) a hand axe, and the elementary fireball attack.
In other words, prepare to die. You're unworthy.

Pffft, that's funny cause you can.
In dark souls, an item called "homeward bone" teleports you to the last bonfire you rested at.
Unfortunately for you, this boss is still mandatory.
