Description Here's some in-progress photos of the sculpture, if anyone is curious.

The first photo is of the armature that failed (bastard!). A word to the wise for anyone who wants to do a sculpture like this--make sure you use something really, really rigid and strong for the spine and supporting leg. Don't use aluminum armature wire. It will let you down.

would a wire clothes hanger work for the spine and maybe legs? or that be a bit to hard to work with?

That might work pretty well--you don't want something extremely easy to work with if it's going to be bearing a lot of weight. If the piece has more support, though, going with something lighter weight and more pliable, like aluminum armature wire, is a very good choice in case you need to reposition something.

It’s like he’s running into existence. *imagines how cool a claymation of a figure BEING created (or even creating itself) would be*

Anyways, it’s always cool to see your WIP photos. VERY interesting to look at. <3

Is that artists tape? Did you use any aluminum foil for bulking up the form first or did you leave it at the tape and then use sculpy around it? :3

It's autoclave tape--kinda like masking tape, but stronger, and able to handle high temperatures. My bf, who is a chemist, gets it from work.

There's foil underneath the tape, so that is as much as I bulked it out. I wish I'd bulked it out a bit more, because I did use a ton of clay for this, but sometimes less foil/bulk means more versatility.

would masking tape work then? I mean it wouldn't like melt and destroy the sculpture in the oven?

It would probably be fine, but I've never personally used it. Best way to test it out is to put some in the oven at the temperature you'd bake polymer clay, around 275 degrees Fahrenheit or so, and let it sit in there for 20 minutes or so at that temperature. I'm guessing the point at which masking tape burns or melts is much higher than the temperature for baking most polymer clays, but it wouldn't hurt to test it out before using it.

If you want to skip the tape, you can also just use superglue to attach the aluminum foil to the armature and then wrap some light gauge wire around the foil to further secure it. Superglue does fine in the oven at those temperatures.

i don't even have armature wire, i use this stiff floral wire because that's all micheals had and my ride wasn't gonna take me all over xD but its pretty sturdy i guess...its just hard to get the shape right...i think i finally have the body i want but i has to wait for my mom to get off so i can get some tape before i attach the legs >.<

Ahhh, makes sense. :3

Did you use anything around the legs or did you leave those wrapped wire? And it's steel wire correct? What kind and thickness was it?

I did add a couple pieces of foil at the end of each wire just to reinforce the front paws. The neck, back and right hind leg are one piece of bent steel rod, and the rest of legs are aluminum armature wire, which works just fine for most sculptures where the weight is distributed more evenly. The tail is a piece of copper wire, only because I don't have aluminum in that fine a gauge.

The aluminum is 1/4" in diameter, I think. The steel rod I used is slightly greater in diameter, but not much. I don't remember the gauge, unfortunatley, sorry. It was thick enough that we needed a hammer and vise to bend/shape it, and a hacksaw to cut it, though.

Niiice. That's the best kind of wire XD

Thanks :3
