Description
Finally finished sculpting this guy. All that's left is to paint him and attach him to his base. Will update with more info later as he needs to be completely done by Saturday morning.Sculpey Firm over a wire armature. Previous WIP shots are in my scraps.
One more update to come, once he's all painted. This bastard has taken me WAY too long to complete, but I am SO glad he's (almost) done!
Also, since this is a finished piece, please, no critiques!

Once you baked him, did you just twist him off and filled the hole? I haven't tried sculpting that way before, and I'm afraid I'll brake the clay (super sculpey) if I do try it. D:

Just plain beautiful Rachel!
it's amazing how some of those projects just go forever.
The time and effort you put in to this one really paid off...
Spectrum for this one next year?....
Have a great weekend my friend!
Take care,
Randy

Thanks, Randy!
Yeah, this guy was definitely one of those projects, and for a while I didn't know if I was ever going to be able to get him done, but I finally found the right direction to take and that, along with the proper motivation (a deadline for a juried show) helped me get him finished.
Definitely Spectrum for this guy! I'm bummed that I missed this year's deadline, but hey, it means I won't have to scramble and rush anything for next year's, right?
Cross your fingers for me, though--I find out this week about the show I submitted to (The Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach), and if I get in, I will be beyond thrilled.
Hope all is well with you!

Heya Rachel!
Great to hear you are going to enter it in Spectrum next year...
Got good vibes going your way for the Laguna Beach show.
I know a few people that have done that and there are some definite heavy hitters that attend that show.
Best of luck to you!
Take care,
Randy

Thanks again, Randy!
Unfortunately I didn't make it in to the Laguna Beach show this year, but I am determined to really blow the jury away next year. I think the problem was that my sculptures weren't really part of a larger theme, and apparently that kind of cohesion is something they look for. I just went with what I had available to me, which really wasn't much because I'd been spending so much time on the Dragon. Now that he's done, I am going to get cranking on some new projects to add to my portfolio. They should double nicely as themed pieces for the Festival AND possible submissions for Spectrum. I might wind up with more than one piece to submit to Spectrum this time.
I was pretty devastated by the rejection letter I got, but thankfully that only lasted a day. I'm still a little disappointed, but I'm also really excited to buckle down this year and tackle some new projects now that I have some goals for next year. I couldn't have predicted that the rejection letter would ultimately have the results that it did, but I'm glad I feel excited and optimistic instead of completely down-in-the-dumps.

Sorry to hear you didn't make it in to the Laguna Beach show Rachel.
Yeah, we got rejected by a lot of shows for a while, but it's something we didn't take personally (at least I tried not to...hee hee)
Do you do any other shows?
We travelled coast to coast for 8 years and one of our favorites was the Sausalito Art Festival there in CA.
It always did really well for us.
The Laguna show goes for about a month or so right?
Maybe I'm thinking of another one.
Anyways, I always figure that there was a reason we didn't get accepted in to certain ones and something else took it's place....
Guess that's the way the universe works...
I love the way you colored the dragon.
Can't wait to see full shots of it as well.
Best to you!
Good luck for the Spectrum entry next year too!
Take care,
Randy

Thanks! Those were a pain to do, but I'm glad I did them because I think the end result was definitely worth it.
