Description
Just another update on this guy... He's a bit labor-intensive and is taking a little longer than I initially expected he would, but I'm hoping he'll be done this year.See my scraps for previous WIP shots!

Aww, thanks! Yeah, the scales took (and are still taking) a very long time. I'm not doing them over the whole body, thank goodness. It wouldn't look right and would probably drive me insane in the process.
Glad you like it!
Thanks for all of your kind comments, by the way--I'm glad you like my work so much!

Yes, I'm still working on him and I should be done sculpting him within the next few weeks. He's been a challenge but I'm not giving up!

And thanks! I'm glad you like him.

jesus.. How did you manage that detail on the paws??

rgyoung In reply to Upsidog [2010-08-22 18:49:50 +0000 UTC]
Long hours and a tiny, spatula-like dental tool. Each scale you see started out as a tiny ball that was flattened and pressed into the clay.

Your detail and anatomy on this is just beautiful! His cheekbones and torso are my favorite, it's very cut and with pleasing lines, the eye just flows along with it. His whiskers are very cute, as well. Can't wait to see this done, although I love unfinished work for some reason!

Woah, seriously, thank you!
I know what you mean about unfinished work--I really enjoy looking at other folks' WIPs as well. Maybe it's because we get to see a piece when there's still some mystery in the whole process since we (and maybe even the artist, to some extent) don't know exactly how the piece will turn out. That potential can be exciting and appealing, I think.

Exactly! That, and I love that the mind's eye can practically fill in the detail on its own somehow, it's great in so many ways!

Looking awesome, but all those scales must be a right pain in the arse!

Thanks!
Yes, yes they are indeed a pain in the arse. I don't even want to think about how many hours the feet/legs took to do. But hopefully it'll all have been worth it in the end.

Thank you! Some days I wonder what I've gotten myself into, doing all the scales by hand, but I think it'll be worth it when all is said and done.

I use isopropyl alcohol(91%) and a small natural sea sponge (the kind used by watercolorists) or a soft synthetic brush to smooth away finger prints.
To get rid of really large imperfections or areas that are uneven, I rough up the area with a clay rake (it's the tool in the bottom half of this photo: [link] ) and then smooth using the alcohol/sponge/brush method until I'm satisfied with how things look.
Thanks for the comment. I hope my reply was helpful!

Really looking beautiful Rachel...
Is it going to be on a rock or something like that?
Have a great weekend!
Take care

Thanks, Randy!
Yep, he's going to be on a sculpted rock-type thing. You can see what I am planning on attaching him to here: [link]
The rock base that I sculpted way back when when this project was in its infancy may not end up working out when all is said and done, but it will definitely be something similar to what's pictured in the link.
Have a good one, my friend!

I hope it will! I keep telling myself the hard part is over and now all I have to do is detail work. But it sure is A LOT of detail work because of those scales.
I am hoping to finish this in time to submit it to Spectrum. Cross your fingers for me!
Thanks again, Randy! I really appreciate all the encouragement.

Wow, this is AMAZING so far.
This is the first time I've really checked this piece of yours out and I thought it was a 3D digital rendering at first! (then I paid more close attention to the post holding the sculpture up).
Great work, wonderful detail and AMAZING anatomy

love it! will the finish piece have wings?

rgyoung In reply to areyouplanetbound [2010-07-31 09:52:36 +0000 UTC]
Thanks!
The finished dragon will not have wings--he's more of a Chinese-style dragon. I plan to do a European-style dragon at some point, though, and that one will definitely have wings.
