Description Been a while since I posted an update on this guy and figured it was time for one since I just finished making and adding his spikes.

Each spike was sculpted and textured on two sides, then baked and carved on the third side. Kind of labor-intensive but the end result was worth it, I think. Doing the scales will be the next step and I will probably go crazy adding textures to this beast, but I hope it won't have been in vain. Anyway, more updates will be posted soon.

Super sculpey firm and apoxie clay over a wire armature. More photos of this guy in my scrapbook if you're curious!

Will be added to scraps eventually.

That's gorgeous!! Wow...it reminds me a little bit of the pet dragon in the Rupert the Bear stories from yonks ago. Happy memories!

Thanks, Richard! I'm not familiar with the Rupert the Bear stories, but I will see if I can hunt down some copies if the series is still in print; it sounds like I might like them from the brief research I've done.

Trying to get back into the swing of things! Work has been crazy the past couple of years, should be calming down soon though. Taking some time off to just work on my handiwork.

Thanks, Aja! Hey, at some point, could I get your opinion on some business cards I'm doing? I will probably be posting them here, in my scraps section.

Hope you, Cole and the pooches are all having a great summer!

I am very much liking how he's turning out. My fav being the face/head area. The third picture in the set of four being my fav. How will you display him? Can't wait for more updates. Great job!!!

rgyoung In reply to DianaArtimis [2009-08-06 01:02:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm enjoying his emergence as well, which is a good thing!

He's going to be mounted on a base that I sculpted. You can see it, as well as the future placement of the sculpture in this set of photos: [link]

Once the dragon is all sculpted, I may end up going back and adding to the base; it all depends on whether the sculpt looks right with the base.

You can--and I'm nowhere close to achieving the level of detail possible with clay. Google the Shiflett Brothers to see what I mean.

All it takes is practice and patience. You should give it a try!

Apparently all the action has been taking place in your scrapbook This is looking fantastic! I can't wait to see the end results. Your friend should be very pleased to have this (I read that you were giving it away).

I'm not very good with sculpting stuff... Is this already baked and you just add your details on top?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rgyoung In reply to AmandaMyers [2009-07-29 05:58:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yes, I hope he likes it. This sculpture is my way of repaying the incredible support he's shown for my art over 20+ years of friendship.

With the exception of the spikes (which were baked before attaching them to the sculpture), as well the claws, antlers and whiskers (which are made from a self-hardening clay), the majority of the sculpture is uncooked. I'll do the scales and the ventral plates and then put the whole thing in the oven.

Kudos to you for hunting the rest of the WIP shots down in my scraps!

Mgyk [2009-07-29 03:47:38 +0000 UTC]

He looks really amazing, but may I ask how you have his whiskers stay in shape? Wire?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rgyoung In reply to Mgyk [2009-07-29 05:49:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
The whiskers are made with wire that has a layer of apoxie clay over it. Apoxie is a two-part self-hardening sculpting medium, so all I had to do was mix it, put it on the wire, wait a few hours for it to harden, sand it and retouch it with more clay where needed. The antlers and claws were made with the same stuff, also over wire.

Mgyk In reply to rgyoung [2009-07-29 05:59:49 +0000 UTC]

No problem.
Oh that's neat. My mom and I used to make porcelain dolls and she used to use wire on the insides so they could support themselves. Always wanted to get back into it, more so after seeing your work, but I've found my niche in the 2D arts.
I'd probably break it or something, I'm so clumsy. I do hope you keep up the amazing work though.
