Description
This is an all wood model of two polyhedron in one. This is the sister of the Cube with Cuboctahedron inside (OS-11) because they are both Duals and share the same edge midpoint. The outside is an Octahedron (8 equilateral triangles, 6 vertices & 12 pieces) and inside is a Cuboctahedron (8 equilateral triangles, 6 squares, 12 vertices & 24 pieces). This model shows the 1:1 relationship between the 12 vertices of the inner Cuboctahedron, and the exact mid-points of the 12 pieces of the outer Octahedron. I like to stain each a different color to visually set off the two Polyhedron. If someone wanted this larger up to 30" or different color combination just let me know.

hah thanks Viking.. really makes a difference, building it in wood rather than drawing on paper or a PC

The different colours give great interest to this piece ~ I'd love to see the pics in a larger size! Coco

that really does help doesnt it? if it was all one color its harder to tell there are two individual pieces rather than just one complex mess in there

Well, I'd hardly call it a "mess" ~ it's a beautiful structure!

Thank you, I really lucked out on the shadows on that! they really help sell the depth of the oversll piece, and which pieces are in front of the others

How have you attached the corners of the cuboctahedron to the the edges of the octahedron?

Thats kind of a neat trick. I pre drilled holes in the tips of the cuboctahedron, and the mid point of the octahedron before building them. I cut small wood dowels that bottomed out in the octahedron's holes but about another 1/16 longer. I flooded the holes with white glue then pressed in the dowels. Then I put glue in the holes of the tips of the cuboctahedron and then positioned the one inside the other. I pulled the dowels (with tweezers) from the one and telescoped into the other, so the dowels were completely submerged in white glue. Wipe away the excess, let dry, the white glue (good ol' Elmers) dries clear, so it's really clean & strong!
