Description I was going to hold off on posting this a bit till I got some other pictures from Costa Rica up, but what heck, I'll just do it now.

This is a Magnificent Hummingbird, and while it isn't quite as magnificent in this shot as it can be ([link] ), I think it actually works better for the overall color scheme as it is.

These birds are among the most common species in Costa Rica, particularly in the upper altitudes where this individual was photographed. I had had to lie with my back at about a 45 degree angle against a wet hill for around 90 minutes before this guy was comfortable enough to come back to his perch. And just to complicate matters, it was starting to get dark too, so the pressure was on. Thankfully, hummingbirds are creatures of habit, and they tend to revisit the same places over and over, so it was only a matter of time.

When they show their colors they're pretty magnificent, but despite trying really hard, I couldn't get a profile shot of this guy showing his colors. Glad you like the shot.

Hehe, glad you like it. I think there's always something that can be improved. I think it would have been great if he had been flashing his head colors at me, but maybe that's just wishing too much. Thanks for the comment.

Yes, of course there's always room for improvement. Just not much room in this shot. Please humor me! I know that feeling, sometimes I wish I could direct animals. Just a bit to the left, please. Now look straight ahead... that's it, hold it! But we can't get greedy.

It's my job to be hypercritical of my pictures. But you're right. A lot of the time, you take what you can get with animal photography.
