Description Contrary to the looks of this picture, this Pallid Bat (Antrozous pallidus) was completely silent. Actually, I think it was just begging one of us to put a finger in its mouth so it could exact its revenge for us waking it up. Taken in the Big Bend area of Texas on the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area.

Great photos! This little guy reminded me of BBC Sherlock. OK to use as such? solarperplexus.tumblr.com/post…

"Look at these! They're sharp you know! Don't eat me!" Aw, they're so easily terrified, but what a beautiful Pallid!
Was this for a study, or was it just to observe the health status of the local critters or something of that sort?

Thanks. I didn't used to like them, but they've grown on me over the past few years.

Are you sure it was silent, maybe it was making a lot of noise you just couldn't hear

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

robbobert In reply to gokuyert [2010-12-05 18:36:35 +0000 UTC]

It's quite possible. Most of these bats you can hear at least a portion of the sound they make, at least when they're echolocating, but maybe that changes when they get handheld.

Haha, I was going to title the picture something along those lines, but I couldn't think of the sound I wanted him to be making. Now I know, it was RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Are you sure it was silent? It could have been screaming in ultrasound and you wouldn't have heard the bat cussing you out.

It's definitely possible. For most of these bats, you can hear at least a portion of the sound they make, at least while they're echolocating. Kind of a clicking/squeaking sound. I didn't hear that in this case, but maybe that's just because we were squeezing the life out of him (not really. ).

Zsantz In reply to robbobert [2010-12-05 20:16:37 +0000 UTC]

I thought of that because I once went on a night hike to find bats and the only way we could hear them (to then look for them) was using an ultrasonic microphone.
