Description I recently went on a trip with a few professor and grad students at my university to an Air Force base to catalogue wildlife. We wanted to catch a lot of mammals (that was our main intention in going) but it's been a bad year for mammals apparently, so most of what we saw was either frog, snake, or spider in origin.

I know that this is a water snake, and a young one at that, but I'm not sure what the species is. Cute little guy though. He was hiding under a rock right on one of the lakes we searched.

Glad you like it. Definitely a lot cuter than the mean buggers they turn into when they grow up.

Didn't it bite you? I found one yesterday, although it was all brown. I had it by the back of its head, in case it did want to bite.

The big ones will bite the crap out of you, but this was just a baby, and they don't tend to bite.

I caught one recently. I was afraid of it biting me. Yeah, I'm a baby. I got bit by a Garter and it hurt, lol. The water snake I found was pretty small. He was all brown.

I actually don't recall if I held it or not. I was most concerned with getting an in-focus shot of it. Water snakes have a bit of a mean streak in them and have a wicked strong bite too, but I imagine this guy would still have been fun to hold, as small as he was. Something that small can't pack much of a punch, right?

What you have seems to be a variety of Plain-bellied Water Snake. Depending on where you found it, it's either a Red-bellied, Yellow-bellied, or Blotched Water Snake. It could also be a rare Copper-bellied one. The four all have babies that look like this. In my area(SE Louisiana) we have the Yellow-bellied type.

Aww, he's adorable! Look at his widdle tongue sniffing everything out.

I saw a snake once in Tennessee that, to this day, despite looking and asking around online, I've never been able to identify. It was early morning and I was exploring the slightly wooded area and underbrush. Suddenly I saw what I thought was a worm escaping me. He was around this little guy's size, but was was so dark if he had markings, they were hard to see. The most striking feature was his head, which was just a bright red color. Assuming he was venomous, I avoided him.

Tiny little thing... He's cute~

But you kinda have to be careful about those type of animals... If you're not sure about it, the last thing you should do is pick it up. (I'm not a herptetologist; I'm just repeating what I heard on TV. )

lol. Not sure if I'd call them adorable either, but I definitely do have a fascination with them. Untill they start getting bitey at least... Actually helped a friend out over the past two years working on his undergraduate research on cottonmouths in West Texas, so I've had close contact with snakes more than once.

That's a juvenile Nerodia erythrogaster (plainbelly water snake). Very cute! They sometimes lose their patterns as they grow older.

I agree with you, I loooove snakes and its ashame they are killed because people are scared of them. I rarely come across snakes and we have plenty of snakes where I am, when someone does come across one I see it as rare because they usually just slither away to avoid you before you get close. I respect them to the point where I will only touch the garter and ribbon snakes because I know they are harmless, I wouldnt know any other kind off the top of my head so I won't even bother ha

Uhh, that guy is really cute and so small, when you compare with the hand holding him...
But he seems to be quite nervous, with these huge eyes and the tongue, sticking out like that...Well, okay, no wonder... I would be nervous too, when some giant would pick me up and hold me in front of a large metal thing ^^

robbobert In reply to alfiriel [2006-10-17 06:08:08 +0000 UTC]

hehe, I thought the eyes on this guy were too cute. Almost too big for his head. But yeah, I guess I would be kinda nervous if something so much bigger than me picked me up and posed me for a camera. I actually scared a rat snake that we caught by jerking my camera around a little too fast. Oops.

resembles our northern water snakes that we have here in missouri quite a bit

though they can be pretty fiesty when handled, you might get bit and it will hurt but nothing past that

and certainly not venemous, pupils is round

robbobert In reply to thetoob [2006-10-16 00:14:46 +0000 UTC]

It does look somewhat like that. I was just doing some google image searching and I happened across another snake called the blotched water snake. It looks a lot like my mystery snake, especially as a juvenile, and the scientific name rings a bell (Nerodia erythrogaster). I really suck at knowing what the heck the animal I'm photographing is called, though, so I'm probably still wrong. lol

I know its a diamond back water snake, we have those here, they are really sweet snakes I handle wild ones all the time in the summer. I love em, exspecially the big five foot one that lives in my pond.

Good photo, its cool how you got him right when his tongue was out! *loves snakes*

robbobert In reply to Kumlay [2006-10-15 23:51:36 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. You see, I thought it was a diamondback water snake too, but the professor I was working with said that's not what it was (and never said what it actually was). So I don't know. I think I'm siding with you on this one since I thought the same thing, but without actually knowing the other species of water snake, I can't be certain.

bwahhahaha, not even CLOSE to a water mocassin

and not a snake on the earth is poisonous, they are venemous, poison ivy is poisonous

P0W3RTR1PP In reply to thetoob [2006-10-15 15:53:21 +0000 UTC]

Not even close? Why is that? And what exactly is the difference between poison and venom?

Prick.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

thetoob In reply to P0W3RTR1PP [2006-10-15 18:11:36 +0000 UTC]

water moccasins also have another nickname, cottonmouth, they are normally jet black, or sometimes a very slightly lighter all black, with a lighter underbelly

furthermore, ALL venemous snakes have slit pupils, like a cat, this one has round ones, thus is cannot be venemous

oh ya, and venemous means the poison is injected thru fangs, means you cant get sick by touching their skin (or in this case scales)

and the closest type of venemous snake this watersnake does resemble is the copperhead (which it is obviously trying to mimick), but its markings are upside down what they should be in order to be a copperhead, and also the pupils of course would have to be slitted

people kill these snakes all the time thinking that they are dangerous, when really they would rather just run away and hide from humans, they, like all other creatures, are a vital part of the ecosystem, and people automatically labeling them dangerous gets far to many murdered by non-information

I need to point out that you sir are full of shit... the eyes have nothing to do with being venomous or not. Case in point look up a photo of a cobra (round eyes) then look up a photo of a dumeril boa (slit eyes, I owned one).

i do applaud your find of that snake picture however, mostly because it has introduced me to a new species of cottonmouth, we have a different species here, that like i said in another post, is black, man, these things resemble copperheads quite a bit, even with the yellow tail as juviniles, wow

oh, also notice the triangular head, another sign that this snake you linked me is most definetely venemous
