Barbara Ann Minerva was the heiress of an English family that emigrated from Central Italy, and an amateur explorer and archaeologist. In reality, though, she was a fraud who took credit for what her contemporaries did. All that changed when she ended up on an excavation in West Africa, in the hopes of finding several ancient artifacts from the Ghana Empire. Yet her team was betrayed by their guides, their food supplies ran out...and worse: they were soon under attack by hostile tribes who saw this as another attempt of British Colonialism. Barbara and her colleague jumped into the Niger River for safety, floating downstream until they reached Koumbi Saleh: the ancient capital of the old Ghana Empire. Foolishly, Barbara pushed her colleague out of the way, hoping to be the first to enter the city and take as many artifacts as she could find. One such artifact, however, was in a temple dedicated to Mafdet: the Ancient Egyptian Goddess of Justice. The temple itself predated the Ghana Empire; having been built by Egyptian refugees who fled the Persian Conquest of Egypt in the 6th century BCE. Barbara entered the Hypostyle Hall, which was restricted to the priests only, and stole a golden statue of Mafdet. Enraged by this sacrilege, Mafdet herself appeared to exact her vengeance. As punishment, she transformed Barbara into a humanoid cheetah. Horrified of her monstrous form, Barbara made her way to America, hoping to find a cure. However, most people were terrified of her appearance, and she was forced to resort to stealing: reduced to an animalistic state because of the curse. This caught the attention of Wonder Woman, who assumed that Barbara was indeed a monster, and despite their first fight, was able to defeat her. Upon regaining her sanity, Barbara began to develop an intense hatred for the Amazon Demigod, and a desire to kill her. Thus, Barbara Ann Minerva became Cheetah, using her superhuman speed and agility to exact her revenge against Wonder Woman.

For Cheetah's look, I loved what the DC Animated Movies did with her, as well as the DCAU, so I decided to give Cheetah the head of her namesake, and still retain her long red hair. As with her namesake animal, she is incredibly fast; able to reach speeds of up to 75 mph. Being purely carnivorous, she sometimes uses her abilities to hunt for food. Her ultimate prey is obviously Wonder Woman, but for the most part, she subsists mostly on wild game such as deer and the occasional rabbit. She is a founding member of the Injustice Gang, and later became a core member of both incarnations of the Legion of Doom. When Luthor tried to revive Brainiac, but instead accidentally summoned Darkseid, she put aside her quest for vengeance against Diana, and helped to fend off the last invasion of Earth by Apokolips. During that time, she met and fell in love with a metahuman who suffered as she did: Edward Dawson, AKA Lion-Mane.
