Description
After drawing Lt. Kedair, I felt compelled to attempt to portray the rest of the crew of the USS Aventine from the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy of novels.Top row, left to right:
Doctor Simon Tarses; chief medical officer
Lieutenant Mikaela Leishman; chief engineer
Lieutenant Commander Gruhn Helkara; chief science officer
Lieutenant Oliana Mirren; operations manager
Bottom row, left to right:
Commander Sam Bowers; first officer
Captain Ezri Dax; commanding officer
Lieutenant Lonnoc Kedair; chief of security
A large motivation in doing this came simply from my fascination at the idea that Ezri became a captain. On the face of it, if you only know her from the show, it seems implausible, but that's why it interests me so much. An unlikely character displaying that level of growth is appealing.

I don't know what was trickier: trying to capture the likenesses of the characters that have been seen on screen or deciding how to draw the characters that appear exclusively in the books. At first, I tried looking through this thread pertaining to literary casting choices on TrekBBS, to try to get an idea of what others thought these people should look like, but I ultimately opted to just do my own thing.
Most of the non-canon characters I didn't base on anyone specific. I used Phil Morris as my model for Bowers, but didn't try super hard to make him look exactly like the actor.
Also, I originally drew Mirren to sort of resemble Angela Kinsey, but I belatedly discovered she wasn't just a character invented for the books; she had in fact been in an early episode of TNG. Apparently, author David Mack had forgotten this as well, which was why he turned her from dark-haired to blonde. My Mirren ended up looking nothing like the actress who had played her.
For a few moments, I was like, "Meh, who cares?" Then I noticed that my Leishman looked more like the TV Mirren than my Mirren did, so with a few alterations, Leishman became Mirren and vice versa. Actually, I prefer Leishman's new look. If I came at all close to how she's supposed to look in the books, though, I have no clue. I couldn't even find a reference to her hair color. I guess it doesn't matter. This was just a small project I did for my own amusement when I should have been working on more important things.

Thank you! It's very helpful to be able to put names to faces like this. It's also very neat to see your inspirations for each of the different characters!

Thank you for this. Nice to have some faces to go with one of my favorite starship crews.

They really need to make a novel series out of this. Excellent, thank you!

This makes me so happy. Would love to see your take on Erika Hernandez and the folks from Columbia, too.

Thanks very much. I would like to do a composition with as many characters from Destiny as I can fit in, though to be honest, I was thinking that Hernandez might be the only crew member from the Columbia that I'd include in a group shot. I have to confess, I've never seen any of the episodes Hernandez is in. Enterprise was my least favorite of the Star Trek series and I'd pretty much tuned out by the least season, although I understand it was considered by most to be the best. When I started reading Destiny, I mistakenly inferred that the Columbia crew wouldn't play a major role in the story, so I made less of an effort to remember the characters from that portion of the narrative.
It's all academic at this point since I have no idea when I'd get around to undertaking such an ambitious project. Anyway, thanks for commenting; sorry for my lengthy reply.

I can understand Hernandez being the only one you'd include, seeing as she survives the longest. Thanks for taking the time for a measured, thorough response.

THANK YOU!! You've just put faces to the entire Aventine crew. I'd like to see renditions of the crew of the NX-02, the Titan and the 1701-E from Destiny as well!! Bravo!! I've seen drawings of Titan's crew before, but every time some one does one, they leave out Torvig... I gotta say tho, I really like this.

I'm glad you like it. You know, now that you mention it, I hadn't thought about it when I was doing this, but I have considered drawing the other crews you mentioned and then maybe putting them all together as one large picture, as daunting as such a project might be. I wouldn't dream of leaving Torvig out of a representation of the Titan crew, but I can see why others might shy away from trying to draw him; aliens are sometimes harder to visualize. I've made a couple attempts at drawing a Caeliar, but found it very difficult. I did see a picture of what Torvig's species is apparently supposed to look like, though, so I'd probably reference that if I were to draw him. Anyway, thank you very much for the comment; I appreciate it.

More than anything in Destiny, I enjoyed the crews of NX-02, and 1701-E (2381) and the Aventine. I've already seen most the crew of the Titan, and now also Aventine, so that means, I'd be interested in seeing the NX-02 or the E. I cant wait to see what you come out with. Ill be watching.

Still haven't read "Destiny", so I can't say much about the novel only characters, but I really like this drawing. Very interesting crew. Mirren is sweet Great likeness on Ezri, you captured her quite good

I know Ezri from DS9, and I believe Simon Tarses was in The Drumhead episode of TNG. I'm guessing the others are pure novel only characters.
Nice Work

Thanks. I was only familiar with those two characters as well, but it turns out that Mirren was from the 1st season TNG episode where she takes her Academy entrance exam along with Wesley and Mordock.
