Description
(2016 EDIT: I made a few changes... tweaked some colors and redrew Kira's face entirely)It is accomplished.
A scant number of you may have seen the sketch of this take-off on Da Vinci's Last Supper back in December of 2012 when I uploaded it to my scraps.
I'd kinda hoped to have it completed by the following month, to commemorate Deep Space Nine's 20th anniversary, but I was just so damn daunted by how much work I knew would be involved that I left the drawings sitting on the end of my couch and the DVDs I intended to reference gathering dust on top of my TV for a year. Just under a week ago, the show reached it's 21st anniversary. If it were a person, it would now be old enough to drink.
I still clearly recall seeing the first promo for DS9. All it said was "Coming in January" and the name of the show. Being deep into my Trekkie phase, that was enough to cause me to bound across the room while uttering a triumphant "Yes!"

Yup. Totally with you on DS9 being the best series. It boasted a super-diverse cast of primary and secondary characters that all played well off each other.
(I remember being a little kid when the show debuted and I thought it was a movie too! XD) It was definitely the most cinematic (operatic even) series of all five Treks.
Glad you included Quark's as the backdrop. I was always in awe of the rather gothic setting (as a contrast to the super-modern setting of the other shows)
Haha, I just noticed O'Brien's little Alamo figurines...! Very nice!

I'm glad you mentioned the Alamo figurines. I had to draw them slightly larger than they were on the show so that they wouldn't just seem to be little indistinct specks, but I was still curious how many people- if any- would recognize them for what they were. Thanks for commenting.

I'm sure if you'd snuck another 47 DS9 gags, I'd have spotted them. That's how much of a geek I am.

My favorite Trek after TOS! Well done, even capturing the religious subtext the series had!

Thanks. Yeah, the religious angle was definitely a prime factor in choosing DS9 for this particular motif. Also, DS9 had more than enough good characters to fill all the necessary spots- so many, in fact, it was tough to leave some characters out. Morn is not a major character, but he's such a fixture of the show, I really wanted him in there. I couldn't exclude either Rom or Nog, so that's why there's a 13th "disciple." I kinda wish I'd been able to fit Leeta in there somewhere, but then I also would have wanted to do Dukat and Weyoun, etc... I wouldn't have this problem if I were doing The Last Supper with any of the other Star Trek series. TNG had just enough main and recurring characters for all thirteen spots, but I think I'd have to work a little harder trying to find enough people to fill the extra seats if I did the same thing with TOS, Voyager or Enterprise.

I didn't watch much DS9 growing up (I was a Voyager kid), but I can recognize a work of deep love when I see one. You've really put your all into this, and it shows through wonderfully!

Thanks very much. When Voyager first premiered, I was at the stage where I loved anything named Star Trek unquestioningly, but by the time that show ended, it was my least favorite of the spinoffs (at least until Enterprise came along), but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it for the most part. Also, the EMH is one of my all-time favorite characters. Actually, it was a while before I really got into DS9. Like most of the spinoffs, it took a couple seasons to come into its own, which is weirdly the reverse of how it was for TOS- if that had happened with the original series, it would have been two thirds over by the time it got good.

Shouldn't there be a dabo table somewhere nearby? All kidding aside, an incredible job!

Heh. I figured it was all right if I fudged some of the details. Thanks for commenting.

Really fantastic! I can imagine how much of a pain it must have been to ink that. Love your command of facial expression.
How'd you manage the background?

rocketdave In reply to GuyBcaps [2014-01-09 11:13:10 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. The background was rendered entirely in photoshop, apart from the mural, which I drew by hand... that is, I drew one section by hand, then scanned it and copied and pasted it to form a pattern. Afterward, I realized I have a book on the making of DS9 with an image of the mural that I could have just scanned, but a shortcut like that would have felt like cheating anyway.
The background was super challenging, partly a technical level, but largely in terms of finding references. I couldn't locate any great images of the Quark's bar set online, and half the pics I found seemed to be from Star Trek: the Experience in Las Vegas, so I was pretty much forced to search episodes for frames I could study; having the show on DVD really came in handy. So then I'm doing stuff like examining a shot in one episode, wondering exactly what those lights on the second level are, then putting in a different episode and realizing they're the tables, which have a lit up base, so then I'm trying to find an shot that provides a decent view of the tables. And so on. I felt like I had some creative license to not be 100% accurate, but I still had the desire to get as many details as close to the actual set as possible. All those struts or poles or whatever they are that are coming out of beams and stretching towards the ceiling- those were a bit of a nightmare.
Being as set in my ways as I am, part of me would have liked to have drawn everything by hand, but I concede that just wouldn't have been very practical in this case, nor would it have turned out as well. I mean, take the glasses under the bar for example. It would have been a mess if I'd tried drawing them by hand- even one; I'm not so adept at making things symmetrical.
I don't know if that really answers your question, yet it may be more information than you wanted.

Nope. Just the right amount of information. Sounds like the background was nearly as complex as the characters. Nice job.
