Description
Zion Methodist Cemetery, on the grounds of the Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, Lenzburg, St. Clair County, Illinois, September 4th, 2018.Small to average brick church with a small cemetery. Pleasant enough to look at, but we probably wouldn't have stopped, except that there was a huge (granite?) monument that dwarfed everything else in the cemetery.
In 1860, the Zion Methodist Episcopal Church was organized. Services were held in the surrounding homes, most often the Peter Baumann home. Their church building was erected on a one acre piece of land donated by John and Catherine (nee Morganthaler) Hardy, to be used for church and burial purposes, and dedicated in 1868 on Pentecostal Sunday. The first burial in the cemetery was Wilhelm Bald in 1868.
